Day One of Custom Seas, and Beyond

  • With Custom Seas on the cusp of launching, we wanted to take a moment to talk about our plans for the feature and how we plan on approaching the development of the toolset moving forward. But before we do that, we want to reflect on the journey we’ve had to this point.

Firstly, Custom Seas is a love letter to our players and communities who’ve been staging amazing events over the years, without a dedicated toolset. We’ve been in awe of your creativity and ingenuity (and your persistence!), and we’re thrilled to be equipping you with more tools to set up different game modes and events more efficiently.

So many of you have run incredibly fun and engaging events over the years, using our alpha custom server tech or gathering people on retail servers, and the introduction of Custom Seas is going to immediately relieve you of a lot of that set-up labour - as well as provide you with new options for shenanigans. Getting these tools into your hands feels like a seismic moment for us, and we hope you feel similarly.

We can’t wait to see what you get up to, and have exciting plans to spotlight some of the amazing modes we see surface once Custom Seas goes live. Please expect to hear more about that over the coming weeks and months.

As well as unleashing our community leaders and creators to go host amazing events and experiences, Custom Seas is also going to provide all players with a brand new opportunity to play. The keys to the seas are being put in everyone’s hands, and from Thursday, your blank canvas servers await. Want to level up your #SoTShot game with a free camera? You can do that now. Want to practice PvP and naval combat? Go nuts. Just want to use Sea of Thieves as a digital hangout for up to 23 of your nearest and dearest? That’s immediately on offer too.

It’s worth noting that Custom Seas has marked a fresh approach to developing content for us here at Rare. We shared our ideas earlier than before, brought community leaders and creators in to the studio to road test and ideate with us, and have tested various parts of the feature in Insiders much earlier than we have previously. This is a feature we’ve wanted to build with our players, as well as for our players – and that doesn’t just stop once Custom Seas releases with Season 20.

We know that this is feels like an early version of the toolset landing in retail. That is intentional; we want to get this into lots of players’ hands as early as we can, so we start developing the toolset with as many of you as possible. Because while we’ve had a set of signals from Insiders and creators that the feature is heading in the right direction, we know there’s work to do to give you a broader set of options and capabilities.

This is where we want to be clear: Season 20’s release is not the end of Custom Seas, but the start. We intend to continue building out tools and features with you all from day one, and we’re committed to learning and learning at scale once it releases in live.

We can’t wait to hear what you think, and we’re so excited to see what happens when we hand over all these tools and possibilities into your hands. Tell us what you love and what you don’t, what you’d like more of, and what you’d love to be able to do. We’ll be listening keenly and planning behind the scenes, with a goal to share with our development priorities for Custom Seas in the coming weeks.

For now, thank you to everyone who’s shared feedback and a perspective so far – from folks who’ve come to visit us, to every Insider who has shared thoughts on the feature set. The keys to the seas are about to be yours, and we can’t wait to see what you all unlock with the sandbox at your fingertips.

  • Honestly things are good but, i somewhat feels likw we could have new events like Ancient megalodon hunting, like i want Moby whale boss event it fits the game. it did be fun to be honest, as an sea creature hunter enjoyer.

  • There should be a option for inf gold to addon to it.

  • Why no Server Browser? Would make Custom Seas much more playable for a longer time, at least I feel like that. With the current features it somewhat limits the playability throughout the whole community. In terms of mostly being able to play with people you've known before because of the invite only mechanism. A server browser would greatly involve the chance of playing with new people and not having to rely on a group of small people (from your friendlist or whatever) to be able to play at the same time.

  • @iceskillser The sandbox itself definitely could use some expanding on but I definitely think that this is the right direction for rare to take their game at this point in time that's not to say that something like this couldn't be added in the future. There's so much scrapped content from throughout the years that could be revisited and expanded/developed on that would be wonderful to see in the game at some point. It's a shame to see any hard work of theirs be not utilized as they are an extremely talented team. I'm Excited for years to come, also a bit concerned though as the community has been asking for more of three things pretty consistently throughout the years to be added into the game and rare seems to beat around the bush when it comes to it be talked about. Things like new ship types (which to be fair I don't personally think the game needs anymore ships unless the map is expanded on as well as the overall player count between servers, next up well map expansions new islands new regions new areas for players to explore, and three new world events/natural encounters across the seas. Like a new boss fight that could take place in the ocean. Somethings like this could truly help to revitalize the hope that the community has within the game and for the team behind it. We have faith in you guys please don't let us down.

  • If you dont want to read : custom seas are coming and they want to listen to Player Feedback.

  • I still don't see the appeal of custom seas to the everday player. Gonna be fun for like 5 minutes messing around with it but then I will just go back to playing the normal game or something else all together. This seems like something that makes sense for Streamers and Content Creators but not for average players.

Fallout 76 did something similar a few years ago but it was basically DOA and now it's only really used for doing dailies.

  • I fell in practice no one gonna use this after this season, many pepole don't even follow Sea of thieves social and partners, some will only launch this to check what this is then never again. I hope next season you will focus about maim game mode and listen to evrebody, not only pepole who only tell you positive fake review about development of game

  • add a PvP Hourglass mode for island battles, not just PvP on ships. It would be great if players could also fight on islands as part of the Hourglass system. Additionally, reaching PvP Level 100 could unlock a new curse. The curse could make the player look like an ancient pirate who has been stranded on an island or lost underwater for many years, with weathered skin, barnacles, seaweed, and other ocean-themed details. This would be a unique reward for dedicated PvP players.

  • To be honest I can't have neither good nor bad expectations about this new season, with all the poorly developed updates that we had the unpleasure to receive, I'd rather stay neutral

  • I mean, who told you that it is right direction? I've been reading some of post here and tweets from content creators -If 2 players says that is a right direction and fits your narrative you stick with it? REALLY?

I would love to see how this decision-making process works kekw

  • @noahsot2133

They want to listen but they won't. It's been proven time and time again that they don't actually listen to feedback and they'll do what they want. Correction: they will listen to the feedback but not apply it to the game.

    No one wanted doubloon changes.

No one wanted a new season pass layout.

  • We have custom seas, but I can't save multiple pirate cosmetics load outs. Hmmmmm. Priorities.

  • @kazami8438 I'm begging to feel indifferent to the updates. I'm hanging on for the GMU.

  • It would be nice if you added more weapons or made bigger ships or more crew members

  • To be honest, being able to do whatever we want in the game is really fun and a great way to relieve stress. I believe the game should include standout maps and game modes as part of the core experience and support them with achievements. Additionally, it would be great and fun if added game modes could be searched for using the search bar, added to favorites, and if players could join games that other players are currently playing (in both private and public rooms).

  • You guys need to add the ability to spawn in the HG supply crates aswell as full cannon, wood & fruit crates. I know there is an option for expanded ship supplies but it nearly gives each ship way too much stuff, hundreds of pineapples & chainshots, aswell as an abundance of less useful items like flares, scattershots, traps and firebombs that are a pain to siphon out of each boat.

The ability to spawn in the HG supply crates and full supply crates would make event/boat setup significantly easier

  • Is that also why Last Ship Standing was released before it was ready? So that it could be “developed with the community”

This all just sounds like an excuse for again this feature is not what players want but you are releasing it in the state it’s in anyways. Even basic things are not in custom seas currently. This was the wrong thing to prioritize now having basically 2 seasons with nothing for the main mode of the game. Players are leaving in large numbers for other games bcz Rare has stopped providing good quality updates to the main game

  • Sorry devs ,

But we already had this kind of communication as exemple : Guild , capitancy and nothing was update... ( and i don't talk about my bug that's i can't see my milestone in game)
Promise are done , but will you respect it ? or as usual 2 or 3 years later ?

Game is slowly dying , and you give us now the key with the custom server , but will it be enought to bring back veterans ?
Don't forget that some major games are comming ... GTA VI, Fable (postpone) etc ...

I wish that the game will survive, but who will send the buoy , maybe the dark bretheren or GMU ... but we don't see anything comming since a long time ... The Lore is lost ?

  • Without persistent servers and a browser/game mode selector then this will remain a very niche tool.
I hope content creators enjoy it.

  • Is this a joke?

Maybe you want to rephrase with "We listen your feedback and then we tell you why you are wrong and we are right".

25 years of Xbox and thats all you have to bring to the plate?

  • So what you're saying is you'll add wallbang to custom seas? 😛🤤😼

  • @captwrath
Well, in my opinion, these things need to be added:

    • Remove NPC intelligence when a certain animation is playing. For example, a skeleton emptying their blunderbuss and reloading disables its intelligence and freezes in that position. After this, there should also be a tool that allows it to be moved and rotated 360°.
    • Allow player-controlled ships to blend into each other's textures. This will allow us to simulate shipwrecks, for example, during an explosion. Pointing the bow of one ship and the stern of the other above the water will create the illusion that the ship is split in two, creating the shipwrecks caused by a kraken or explosion.
    • This may have already been mentioned, but I also ask that locations from Tall Tale, Pirate Life, and The Legend of Monkey Island be added as lobby scenes. With Sea of the Damned and the city from The 3rd Tale, you can create a variety of scenes, from simple hide-and-seek games to SotShot photos
  • This post just confirms that you don't really listen to insiders that much. None of our questions on the forums about our ideas or content are ever answered directly EVER. How are we supposed to feel like we are valued as insiders when you can't even tell me why the pirates life stuff and monkey island tall tale items are missing. Or why it's okay to spawn thousands of boxes of wonderous secrets but I can't spawn the shrouded ghost. Why do you say your giving us the keys to the seas yet you hold so much back from us that could really give this mode potential.

Just being able to spawn props from across the game would do wonders for player creativity. We want to be able to create truly custom things like a custom makeshift skeleton fort or spawn different NPCs in different locations for RP. For the average player this will not feel like the monumental moment you think it is custom seas is just not ready. It should have an early access stamp on it because that's what it feels like currently. Even setting up the events you show off in trailers can be really finicky and frustrating. Row boat Royale for example is going to be beyond tedious to setup. Skeleton snipe hunt?

Well without a spawner we have to spawn the skeletons each time when we should just be able to place a spawner and setup custom waves with different enemies. I really do think you guys mean well at Rare but as an insider it genuinely feels like a huge waste of time most of the time. It's cool to see things early but it's hard for me to believe we actually make a difference at all especially when our posts go weeks without being acknowledged or upvoted like their supposed to. It just doesn't feel like a genuine feedback channel. I've been in this program for a long time and I just want more transparency about things. We really need an outline of what exactly you guys have planned for custom seas and your overall thoughts on some of the suggestions we have made.

  • Can't even start a session. Lasagnabeard.

  • Custom servers are the most impactful thing you can bring here alongside a featured playlist of the communities best creations (you could cycle through one each month) otherwise this update isn’t going to be that impactful.

I think it’s cool it exists though, everyone here is saying it’s a useless feature but it’s not

  • I don't know much about custom seas yet and haven't been able to try them, but I have a crazy idea. I know this might sound stupid, but what if there was an island editor tool you could make. Essentially my idea is that this would enable players to build their own island from the sea up and terrain edit and detail it however they'd like. Maybe players could even build structures on it with cannons and whatnot. This would really change the way that custom seas work and might be a bit out of the intended bounds that Rare has, but I still think it would be fun.

  • @theormondroyd

Please tell us what you would do with SoTForge with no file share, oh creativity czar

  • Rare please, I want this game to survive and everyone here wants it to survive but you NEED to listen to the community now, please dont go doing things nobody asked for if someone asks for something 99% the community didn't ask for then dont do it. But i know every single person there at Rare is REALLY talented and sure custom seas is REALLY FUN but most of the player base does not want it, so the only thing you have to do Rare is listen to the community.

  • The update feels... alright, all world events being available is nice for a player that wants a chance to experience them without PVP being a worry.

But going forward, I think it would be a good idea to shift focus towards making a true private server experience available for Custom Seas - no commands or spawning of items, full gold, full reputation, commendations, captained ships available with the same invite-only format that Custom Seas has. If Rare is going to give players the tools and means to make their own experiences, then it should be more robust than it currently is.

  • Also, what happened to Safer Seas fleets? Was that idea just scrapped entirely? I don't want to use Custom Seas if it doesn't give any rewards, even if it allows my friends and I to run multiple ships; I value my time and don't want to waste it not earning anything.

  • I’d quite like a future ability to spawn more than one world event at any given time in custom seas, for example fighting a skelly alliance with the burning blade. Is that ever going to be possible?

  • @jpskywalker9332 said in Day One of Custom Seas, and Beyond:

How are we supposed to feel like we are valued as insiders when you can't even tell me why the pirates life stuff and monkey island tall tale items are missing.

Probably licensing issues. They can't just use someone elses IP for whatever they want.

  • I am hoping for these for custom seas in a future update:

Spawnable NPC ships from tall tales and world events to sail manually for fun, for making stories in legendary locations or for battle:

    skeleton ships (sloop and galleon)
    ghost ships
    ghost brethren ships
    ghost burning blade
    ghost captain ships
    the ferry of the damned
    the black pearl
    the flying Dutchman
    ghost blackwyche
    ghost morningstar
    ghost wild rose
    ghost headless monkey
    lechuck's ghost ship
    reborn burning blade

Port Merrick as a legendary location, with the Treasury from a dark deception being accessible with a lever next to the secret door rather then a hole, or perhaps the hole could work as a secret switch, where we can look at the relics down there from previous adventure from the past or roleplay

Tall tale locations from a pirates life and legend of monkey island as legendary locations for roleplay

Spawnable friendly creatures such as skeletons or phantoms to fight on your side

An AI crew option similar to the burning blade's obsidian Skeleton crew, if you're sailing alone on a galleon or any NPC ships, you'll have the ability to toggle an ai crew of skeletons or phantoms to repair and use cannons

    Spawnable tall tale items

toggleable tall tale equipment in quest redial from tall tales and adventures such as enchanted compasses or tall tale books, enchanted compasses functionality option to point at a treasure item or location

Spawnable journals with custom writing and selectable covers (tall tale and adventures)

Spawnable NPC characters to talk to with custom text dialogue given by players

Custom pop up notifications for actions made by players
