Why have I gotten so bad at the game?

    Lately I have noticed that my skills have suffered, I am missing so many shots on the cannon, I used to hit chainshots with ease but now I miss almost every shot, this also includes cannon balls.

    I am decent at hand to hand combat, in fact I may have actually improved a little.

    I have been playing with a new crewmate that literally has no skill at all, in the middle of fights they will just run into random islands and rocks and it frustrates me so bad I slightly rage inside. I have to continue playing with them because they are my real life friend and I am trying to help them get better but it is super stressful.

    Is there anything I can do to sharpen my skills aside from Arena? I feel like Arena with my friend would send me into a rage lol.

    I would just be honest with the friend.

    You aren't obligated to carry people that aren't going to put in the effort to carry themselves.

    It's a game not a job or an obligation

    Practice and teach them, the more experience they have the better they will get. The more they sink the more they will try to get better. When I first started playing I was playing with a friend who was super experienced, but we still sunk a lot because of me. Every time we sunk I tried to get better, so just let your friend learn from mistakes. If you guys sink analyze what went wrong and what your friend could do better.

    I think it's a mistake having your inexperienced friend be the helmsman.

    They should be on cannons while you do all the hard stuff (steer, repair, repeal boarders, manage sails)

    The direction, positioning, and speed of your ship is going to drastically effect your ability to hit shots. Not a coincidence that it's suddenly harder for you to aim

    Try mixing up the roles, take the wheel for a bit, or practise on ghost ship voyages until he's got the hang of positioning and sail control for speed/turning. He'll get there, and if he's still really struggling just avoid dangerous things all together and enjoy your time with him, go fishing or take cool photos for social media or run Merchant voyages. Enjoy playing with your friend while he still wants to spend time with you and find another crew for when you want to make serious money or engage in hardcore pvp, you can do all sorts in SoT so don't worry about the Gold, just worry about having fun with your friends!

    Take on skeleton fleets and the like together as a means of practice. Then move on to actual pirates.

    In the end practice makes perfect.

    @tek-lt Skills in video games are using memory muscles, like when doing exercise and stopping for a while it takes time to get back into shape.
    Second possible reason to perform worse is when you dont push yourself to hard scenarios as you were used to, our brain is the biggest fan of being lazy. Give it a reason and it wont put efforts, only when we push ourselves it drives faster so maybe youve played "easy mode" for too long.

    As for your friend it depends if he is competitive or not, people that dont have that nature wont "get gud" they will either get frustrated and quit or just accept it and enjoy chilled play sessions.
    But they will never go beyond that, if he is competitive its just a matter of time and practice.

    @tek-lt Your cannon skills are fine... your timing is probably off because you have a raw crew member you are working on to get ship shape... no easy task. A good Captain does well when conditions are ideal, a great Captain does well when conditions are in the toilet. Work on your own skills as a Captain and your friend will follow suit. Communication is the key.

    Sailing practice:
    Sloop on over to Shipwreck Bay, and have him navigate around the island a few times at a slow pace, staying as close to the island as possible, but also taking a different route through the rocks whenever possible. Repeat and increase speed as desired.

    Cannon practice:
    While circling Shipwreck Bay (or any island or outpost, really), pick a landmark and fire at it the entire time (outposts are great, because the metal chimneys on some buildings make a distinct metallic sound when hit with a cannonball), no matter which side of the island you're on. Switch to chainshot as desired.

    Some things are only learned through time and experience though, so hang in there while your friend takes that journey. ghost fleet voyages have already been mentioned, and are a great suggestion.

    The best practice I can suggest for your friend is to complete the Thrones trial. It involves both navigating to a certain point and firing the cannon at a precise moment. That will help you and your friend understand that you should calculate, speed of the vessel, waves movement and angle of the shot while reaching for the objective.

    You probably started using fancy looking cannons and coloured flares.
    Try sailor cannons or if you have them the Magpie Wings cannons and sailor flare.

    100% this.

    Skinnier cannons means more visibility.
    More visibility means more accuracy.

    i can't say why your aim is off lately , all i can say is that we all have bad "aim" days...What your new crewmate is about , well , your investment in time and patience will pay off one day... Sure , it may not be fun to lose but a loss is a true loss if you or yer friend has not learnt from it.

    i wouldn't go mad or keep rage inside , as you are the more experienced player ,i would start the role from Captain: and that means not only giving orders but most of all , giving guidance and transfer your experience over towards their yet undeveloped thinking pattern concerning this game , and this is no offence . Like we all know , SOT is easy to learn but hard to master.
