Hello everybody! Have you ever been in the situation where you and your crew are on an island, be it a skull fort, an outpost or a regular one, and one of your mates goes "THERE'S A GUY HERE!!!" only for you and the rest of the crew wonder where they might be? Have you ever found some additional loot while carrying some treasure and asked your friend to come and get it only to find yourself struggling to explain where you are? Did you ever fall in the water and tried asking for help but your crew can't see you between the waves? Or maybe you want to signal where the loot from that galleon you sunk is going to surface? And don't get me started when alliances are in the mix, where not only you need to hold onto your speaking thrumpet to be heard from afar, but communication in general can be even harder when dealing with language barriers and loud noises like storms, explosions, ecc...
So here's introducing, the FLARE GUN! Comes in so many different colors! Red for enemies, yellow for loot, blue and purple for when you spot a Meg and the Kraken! You can choose which color means what obviously.
You can shoot it on the ground, or in the air to be seen from even farther.
Are you sailing around with your alliance and you spot a galleon coming for you? They might be a bit too far for the speaking trumpet, well now you can shoot your flare in the air, maybe even arching the shot in the direction of that galleon, to warn your fellow pirates about the coming danger!
Oh no! Your ship's sinking, and fast! And you are all alone, your crew is dead and there's too many holes, too much water for only one pirate, but wait!! You can shoot a blue flare (for example) to signal the other crew in your alliance that you need help with repairs! Here comes the rescue!
You managed to successfully board another ship! You lowered the anchor and are running around killing the crew and checking for treasure, you might want to shoot a few flares in the air. A yellow flare could mean that there's loot on board, a green flare to give the signal to attack with the ships, a blue one to say that they've sunk and to stop wasting cannonballs and come get the loot, you could ask for backup or to be careful since they are shooting themselves over to board you.
Communication in this game is key, and the radial dialogue menu is a very nice feature, but sometimes it's just not enough.
Flares are a good solution that doesn't clutter your screen like an in-HUD element would do, they fit the world and the art style nicely and have also a lot of potential for just messing around, using them as fireworks and whatnot.
