SSD

  • Hi guys after a bit of advice please.
Does anyone have the Sea of Thieves external hard drive?
I'm trying to work out if it is an SSD drive or not.

If it isn't could anyone recommend a fast SSD drive from Argos please:D.

    Thanks mate!
I'm after SSD because apparently it improves load times.

  • @mcgovery

I don't know about Argos.. ie. what they have. in stock.
From Amazon UK I got these recently.

    SSD Hard Drive 500GB

    SSD Hard Drive Enclosure

edit I also got one of these a few months back 500GB ( same enclosure bought for this one as well )

All very good. SoT load times a lot faster... so I'm a happy Pirate.
If I had to choose one of the SSD's it would probably be the Samsung.

  • I was looking into this one at Argos too, it's a shame it doesn't come with a code like the SOT controllers used too have. I have a 2TB seagate external hard drive already and seems to have no effect on load times. But great for storage.

Ah so probably not worth it then. I don't really need it for added storage just wanted improved loading times.

    Yes it is pretty good.
Certainly the difference between your vessel sinking & not sinking.
It gives you a better chance of survival.
    I would recommend the move.

  • @needsmokes

Is your seagate HDD or SSD?
SSD you should get a difference on load times

  • Thanks guys!

Would you recommend any of these?
    Sorry for all the questions.

Personally from those listed if I had to choose

Samsung T5 500GB Portable SSD Hard Drive

edit: the 250GB version is fine also, remember you can just keep the games you play the most.. or the ones you need an edge with on the SSD.
You can transfer the game files from the Internal XBox HDD to the external SSD pretty quickly when required. Depends on your budget.

edit: SSD improves XBOX load times... not sure re.PC

  • As far as I understand, there wouldn't be much (if any) advantage to having an SSD (over a normal HDD) plugged in externally, as anything plugged in would be limited to the speed of the USB 3.0 connection anyway.

SSD's on PC can be plugged in internally via their own dedicated connection so are not limited by the USB speeds.

I could, however, be completely wrong.

EDIT: that being said, the standard internal HDD for the Xbox One(on mine anyway) appears to be 5400rpm. Any USB 3.0 drive that is 7200rpm or better will likely be an improvement.

  • I use the Samsung ssd on the original Xbox one, it has definitely improved load times.

  • I have a Seagate ssd and load times are alot better.

  • @triheadedmonkey I am using an external SSD and it made a significant improvement. My time from catching a mermaid or passing through the Ferry of the Damned door dropped from 30 seconds or more down to 6 seconds or less. The process of physically reading data from a spinning platter (standard HDD) is slower than transferring data via the USB connection.

  • @McGovery
Do not spend extra money to get NVME or M.2 form factor.
Like @triheadedmonkey said, you are limited by the USB 3.0 speed.
But, that is for a maximum transfer.

Seek times still play a significant role in load/launch times, so the 5400 rpm hard drive that is stock in the xbox is going to be slower than a 7200 rpm, and that would be slower than an SSD.

    Article here: https://www.gamersnexus.net/guides/3253-xbox-one-x-external-ssd-worth-it-game-load-times

I see improved load times on games on my 7200 rpm external on my xbox one (original) and also greater speed on my SSD on the xbox one s.

For SoT, the SSD always wins.

So your choice is, for nearly the same money, do you want a couple of games to load the fastest the system can (SSD) or do you want a lot of games installed and all to load faster (7200rpm)?

Also, if going for a 7200rpm HD, get one that is powered from a plug, eventhough it's another cord to deal with, they have a lot better transfer rate.

If I get around to it, I will time out the 5400, 7200, and ssd on both xboxes and make a little post.

  • I have one and find it makes a big difference to all games installed on it. I basically bought a standard drive and put it in a cheap external case. I put all the games I am currently playing onto it and the rest onto a larger standard external drive. It's worth the investment from my experience.
