  • That's why I didn't waste my money on one. I bought a $50 one and it's been going for years now.

  • @splatulated If it's not physically broken, you could try to open it up yourself and attempt to fix it. You'll need a special screwdriver though, and putting it back together can be tricky. Or you could pay a specialist to fix it.

how much will a specialist cost

  • @splatulated Varies upon where you go. Normally any place that does PC repairs will have someone who knows how to fix them.

  • @splatulated probably will cost $45... that's how much someone charged me to replace my Pixel screen. I called around and the was the going rate. A controller is not in the same league, way easier.

  • @splatulated

If you fancy DIY.. swap the inners with a non themed one. Should work... fingers crossed.

edit... going the DIY route you will need a T8 SECURITY Torx Screwdriver, Security version has a central hole cut on the screwdriver tip, obviously try this at your own risk.

Plenty of tear-down videos on youtube, best to look there before trying disassembly.

  • @splatulated Did you get yours from Microsoft?

I have a dodgy RT and have just raised a support request at Microsoft Support and it's going in the post for a replacement tomorrow.

He could do that, but he'd loose the light up "Xbox button"

i did, i forget the exact day it arrived, February probably

and its a themed controller that is probabbaly no longer produced so its likely it would get replaced with a random controller not the same one

assuming they would even allow that due to the warranty being ended

  • @splatulated I have just been promised by Microsoft Support that it will be a like for like replacement. Sorry to hear you've not had the same experience.

I am using the year of Xbox X support for my cover.

  • @splatulated i repaired one of my controllers with the same LB problem. if you google it, there are tons of pictures and videos about this.

  • @splatulated least your pretty uni sword still works :D

???? All the official Xbox One controllers have a light up "Xbox button" and the innards of the SoT controller are exactly the same. He'd lose nothing as he already said it is out of warranty.

Tear down of these is pretty easy if you have the proper tools to do so. A spunger and the tamper resistant Torx T8 driver are all you need. Not even sure if you need the tamper resistant one on the S models (you do on the originals though) as I dismantled one for cleaning to remove the drift in the joystick and I think those were standard Torx in it. I need to disassemble it again as my cleaning of that one didn't fix the problem so I can check to be sure if needed.

This is true. If you hold down on the Xbox button while you lift up on the plastic plate, it will slide up and over. No harm.

@SPLATULATED You should be able to get a replacement set of bumpers on Ebay for cheap. Often you will find the part comes with the security T8 you need for disassembly. I've replaced a few bumpers that had broken on friends controllers (it seems this is a common problem with Xbox one controllers).

A word of advice if you do the replacement yourself: each bumper has a plastic 'arm' that makes contact with the tact switch on the PCB. I've found that sometimes you need to file down that arm slightly because the manufacturer may mold them so that they are a little longer than they need to be. So when the new bumpers are in place, check that the buttons 'click' normally before putting the whole controller back together. It's easier than it sounds, but if you have any questions, I'll do my best to help.

  • If the warranty is beat then open it up and fix it yourself just as pretty much everyone is saying. I would. That controller is a nice piece.

True, all Xbox one controllers have a light up Xbox button. But only the SoT controller has a glowing skull that shines at sundown.

I've heard so many wildly inconsistent prices for the SoT controller, I've no idea where people got theirs. I bought mine from the Microsoft store in Europe, $50 with free shipping.
My local Gamestop actually has 1 left, for about $55-$60.
Don't overpay y'all, you can still get them for perfectly reasonable prices.

@SPLATULATED My best advice, other than a DIY job, would be to try and getting it fixed at PC repair shops, electronic retailers etc. It's likely someone there can fix it, and at a reasonable cost.

  • Dissapointing isn't it? The mic port quit working on mine after a few weeks.

  • @splatulated , sorry, the customized SOT controller was just a typical, cheap, junk XBox controller with a skin.

The standard XBox controllers are KRAP.

Upgrade to the Elite Controller. I know, I know, the old XBox controllers that came w/ the 360 were robust as heck, but Microsoft found a way to make more cash: reduce the standard controller to junk status so players must replace them, or upgrade to the Elite.
