Proposal: Governor Fort

  • The skeleton forts are challenging and often provide the best moments in Sea of Thieves, but I hope that in time there will be other kind of forts we can conquer.

To get more interaction between players, they would more often be led to the same point. Recently I read something about player-controlled forts (I think it was also a proposal from a few players) and thought about how this could be further elaborated. Imagine this, a stone fortress that is controlled by skeletons. When you climb the walls and fight your way to the top you have to raise a flag that shows that you have claimed the fort. When you have done this, there will be a final group or skeletons and among them the cursed governor. You have to kill him, take his key and then plunder the vault.

I know that this proposal would take a lot of work and time, but I'm curious if you also think this is a good concept. (Please, upvote this post if you like this idea)

  • @captainnscurvy I like your idea and let me know if this is what you are saying, but I feel like somehow the person who claims the fort should be able to set up a challenge for someone else. Like maybe they can design traps, specific walls, and skeleton guards for the next time the fort becomes active. This should be in addition to what u said. Let me know what you think.

  • @captainnscurvy Sounds too similar to the current fort function. Maybe a "king of the hill" style event where a crew controls a fort and can collect loot for time increments they hold it until forced out? Like every 2 or 5 minutes a high-value item spawns. Maybe the crews could stay and keep collecting for a certain amount of time, but a signal shows other crews that the potential jackpot is increasing? Could be quicker and slowly reward crews for time invested instead of the winner-take-all system in place. Either way, a function for forts outside of raids would be welcome, currently they're dead space unless an active fort is in progress.

  • @aloneemperor960, That would be a good idea, but I think that would make the game too complex. @SupriseAutopsy, I like the idea of a "King of the Hill / Fort". For example, you need to light a beacon before you access the items, but this will attract other players at the same time.

  • Maybe they can even make it a fortified outpost, where you can buy a new set of material, for example the governor's outfit. In that case, the difficulty of conquering it should be very high so that not everyone is governor over time.

  • @captainnscurvy I like the beacon idea. Players would have to determine their own risk/reward odds. If other players see a christmas tree of lit beacons they know there's plenty to try and steal. Any elaboration on how an "outpost governor" system would work?

  • @supriseautopsy, just a series of shops (the same as in normal outposts).
You said that items can spawn after 2 or 5 minutes, I would not let them spawn, but you should pick them up at the store (as you should now do with the animal cages at the merchants). However, you should not be able to sell in the fort itself, for that you have to take a risky trip to a real outpost after a while.

  • Anyone can become a legendary pirate after a while, but only the fiercest pirates can conquer a heavily armed fort. Personally, I would not like to meet an opponent wearing the governor's jacket, I would be dead in no time. The governors set shows dedication and can itself be more feared than the legendary pirates.

But this means that the fort must show a weak spot shortly after the first conquest (collapsed walls), thus allowing other players to conquer the fort again. @AloneEmperor960, maybe here they can repair it, but it will cost them a lot of gold, Do you agree with this idea?

  • @captainnscurvy I love these ideas.

    Let’s keep them going.

Can we see some concept art?

Anything that brings players together and adds to the interactivity of the world, is going to enrich the game and make Sea of Thieves awesome

@AristonSparta, Feast your eyes on this (If you close one eye, it looks better.) :-p

  • @captainnscurvy if they ever introduce a grappling hook for climbing or swinging, that could make for some interesting fort conquests.

What sort of things could you see being a downside to governor forts?

  • @captainnscurvy Yeah, I understand your idea a lot more now and think it would be a good addition.👍

  • @aristonsparta, First and foremost it will be a challenge for the developers, it will take a lot of time because it is a completely new design. For the moment there is no stone in Sea of Thieves, so that texture will have to be made first, after that they have to design a complete fortress that is the same size as a normal outpost.

For the players I do not really see disadvantages, maybe only the fact that the sea will be less safe because of the fort. What do you (and others) think?

  • I agree. We need real forts!

I did this thread a few weeks ago.

    https://www.seaofthieves.com/forum/topic/55705/we-need-real-forts

  • @psk76, You speak of stone forts, but I would keep it at one unique fort, this makes for a more memorable experience.

The wooden forts that are now in the game should definitely remain unchanged. They are fun and not too hard to conquer. If they added NPC soldiers it would become too complex. All humans in the game must also be played by real people. If you want to fight people in the fort you will have to wait until another crew has conquered it.

But we agree that there must be a difficult fort that only the best and tactical players (or players with a lot of gunpowder) can take.

  • @captainnscurvy

Yeah, I dont care how many forts there are. They can still keep the wooden forts with skeletons. I'm not saying I want to replace anything. But adding a few stone forts won't hurt anyone.

If you dont like human NPC we can have ghost like soldiers if thats better.

But we do need stone forts! I'm also thinking that anyone who guards them dont have to spawn from the ground like the skeletons do. All forts have barracks for the soldiers so they just have to spawn inside any of those.

  • @aristonsparta, i really like the idea of a grappling hook, but how would they work?
I think we will not see this in Sea of Thieves because we can shoot ourselves out of a cannon.

Would it not be nice if someone must shoot himself inside the walls of the fort, run to the gate and open it from the inside for his crew!

So we need an interactive gate :p

  • @captainnscurvy well a grappling hook that I’ve heard about would most likely function as a firearm in the game, taking up a slot.

It would be used to hook onto the yard arms of ships, and swing onto enemy ships like a classic pirate.

Or it could be fired at specific grapple points to climb up walls or cliffs.

Or it could be used to rappel down steep areas and cliffs.

  • @captainnscurvy I agree... the developmental process could be intensive, as many resources would have to be created from scratch.

That means for this idea to see the light of day, more players asking for it will be needed.

  • Like the King of the Hill idea. maybe could be worked into current skull fort but once you defeat it the king of the hill mode unlocks. Then gives the current crew a five minute timer to use resources from fort i.e. wood planks and cannon balls to rebuild and refortify the fort. But give the players the ability to build traps or add more cannons in specific spots. The current players ship would then disappear for the time period so they have to stay until all attacking players are defeated or they are all dead. Maybe keep the existing waves of skellies but tonned down to about three waves for the attacking players. Then the show down for the fort. End game would be complete control of the fort for thirty minutes which at the end would give up the key to the treasure room but also drop a secondary key that unlocks another vault on the fort for the special item rewards for wining the battle. Anyway just an idea how to switch up the current skull fort.

  • @iceman-0007, I would give them the choice to restore the fort but not oblige it.

Benefits of restoring: They can keep the fort longer when other players attack, which means they can pick up valuable items for longer

Disadvantages of repairing: It takes a lot of time. Less time to collect valuable items and therefore a lesser amount of loot.

Advantages of not restoring the fort: You save all your money

Disadvantages of not restoring: You are more vulnerable to an attack.

Players will therefore have to make this choice. The fort may also not be restored too quickly because then it would be impossible for other players to drive away the conqueror. This conqueror would then be able to stay in the fortress as long as he wishes and receive treasures. Unless the fort is conquered after 15 minutes by hordes of skeletons, this makes the fort inactive.

But I really like the idea of buying more canons!

  • @psk76, yeah ghosts would be nice, but how do you kill a ghost :p Skeletons with snipers seems fun. Thats the only weapon they don't have yet.

  • @iceman-0007 I love the idea of defending against skeleton waves. Defending against players would require players to join in, and that’s unreliable at best.

  • @aristonsparta that is true but one could hope it would keep players engaged long enough to stay in the round.

  • Aye......

  • How about once you kill the strongholds governer he returns again and again with more and more skeletons /minibosses and trys to retake the stronghold from the sea? Skeleton meg would be awesome and bosses could drop loot

  • @shreksanus, Haha skeletonsharks would be fun, but I want the Governors Fort more :p They can just start with the fort so everyone can visit it, and later with another update they can add more to the fort

Just imagine the mighty fort at the horizon with a lighttower

  • Just imagine running through this gate, what do you think?

  • If you guys don't like the idea of a Spanish fort, maybe it can be an old fort from the Ancients where the skeletongovernor moved in

  • My idea.
