Greek Mythology

  • I'm sure most of you know Rare is using Greek Myth as sort of a base for the lore behind Sea of Thieves, such as Athena who is the Goddess of wisdom, courage, inspiration, civilization, law and justice, strategic warfare, mathematics, strength, strategy, the arts, crafts, and skill.

I'm curious if they're going to continue down this path eventually and bring in more Gods and Goddess's from Greek myth. I think it would be cool to see a large statue of Poseidon with his trident raised towards the sky. Maybe some sort of event could revolve around this statue, when the event starts, like the Skull in the sky to notify everyone of a raid, perhaps the trident glows and forms a hurricane around the surrounding area.

The trident would also draw most of the lighting strikes into it, as if the Gods themselves are waging War and we're just in between it all. Whirlpools would be a pretty good addition and maybe the payout for winning this event would hella worth it. Pandoras Box? Chest of Souls?

  • As someone who has more than a passing interest in Greek mythology and specifically in the Athena mythos... I think it's odd that they chose Athena as the namesake for the legendary faction.

It doesn't really make sense thematically. Poseidon would have been the most obvious and better choice. Apparently Athena was the code name for the open-world project that eventually became SoT, and it seems like their decision to include Athena in SoT has more to do with calling back to that than any real thematic motif.

Although, yes. It would be cool to see them do more, but how much are they willing to draw from real world mythology?

  • Zeus responsible for the perpetual storm and Poseidon for maelstroms, which I hope is implemented in the game down the line. I do like the Greek mythos aspect of the game and definitely hope to see more.

I mention Poseidon's Trident as a Legendary item in my Magic & Mysticism post.

  • I think having more of this Greek Myth aspect in Sea of Thieves would be great. Even if Athena was nothing more then a call back to the code name for SoT, it's something that should be explored.

It's a good question, though it doesn't necessarily have to be by the book, there is the Greek lore but then there is films and games that have a twist onto what we know. Like the Kraken being the spawn of Hades, which is from Clash of the Titans.

In Pirates of the Caribbean, the Kraken is basically Davy Jone's pet that he summons to go after those with the black spot mark. In Sea of Thieves, the lore could also come with a twist. To access Athenas fortune you must be Pirate Legend and currently though the three guilds from Gold Hoarders, Order of Souls to the Merchant Alliance, this is the only way we can progress to Legend.

I know there are ways being added to go about progression. I'd like to see alternate progression tree in the game altogether, rather then grinding for the Pirate Legend status. Eventually everyone will be 'Pirate Legend' and when we're all legends...there is no Legend. So having three separate branches, we would have options.

I wouldn't even limit this part to Greek Myth, if we're talking about the golden age of piracy itself, there was no Sea of Thieves without the Royal Navy that brought the threat of civilization like a tidal wave. This isn't new, I've heard this suggested several times, having a Royal Navy. Like the Pirate Legend status, there could be something else, and a different location for the Navy. But, that isn't the point of this topic.

This is about myth and monsters, wether those monsters be the Kraken or ourselves. This doesn't need to change huge aspects of the game, like i said they plan on new ways of progression. Imagine taking Quests from a statue in the centre of some ancient ruin which eyes glow when you near and a voice can be heard momentarily before you get that same option to pick a quest or ask those questions.

These quests could be more so an Adventure mode, there is a reward but the focus is the narrative that quest will take you on. And who knows, would be cool to get cosmetics that are inspired from Greek myth. Like the Cestus, ancient battle gloves. Or a sword that appears to sizzle with electricity when near a certain enemy...like skeletons? (Similar to Sting from LotR)

Interestingly we know the prototype was called Athena, which might have led to the connection and persistence of the name in game. As to why they chose, Athena, I'm not sure, I believe there were discussions around it a good while ago on the forums.

This article mentions that as well as more recent history of the studio.

Great idea! That is the kind of exploration I would like to see in the game.

  • Likewise @Harlton-Cheston , it would add to that sense of mystery. From my own understanding, I think Rare called the title 'Pirate Legend'' not just for the Legend who claimed the title, but the stories that pirate experienced, the legends, the stories that the captain and the crew experienced together.

From fighting off the vicious Kraken that seeks to claim the lives and the gold for it's own to fighting off waves of other Pirates to claim treasure that is one of a kind. They are heavily focused on the multiplayer aspect, (Which they should, it's a multiplayer game) but not only that, the experience as a crew, and not an experience that can be owned by just one person.

It's clear from their updates and videos, they want you to experience these things with other people. Whether it be friends or meeting new friends. So my suggestion of having other branches doesn't mean I'm looking to take away from that experience Rare has envisioned for us Pirates. When we look back during the golden age of Piracy, those Pirates didn't get their name by just fighting other pirates. When civilization came...that's when those Pirates got their name. (I hope this is making sense, I've had some Grog myself tonight)

Personally I do think they already do plan on exploring this path. When it comes to why they chose the name Athena as the prototype, in my opinion 'Athena' was too narrow of a title, but Sea of Thieves is a more broad title that's about the players and what they experience in this game world.
