Recent Toxicity Level Increase: Please Help

  • Hey Forum Community! There is literally a double in toxic posts, replies, and arguments happening on the forums today. I feel like it is always a little high for my taste by since yesterdays released video it is just viral. The bad kind of viral not the cute kitten video viral, or like influenza viral. I love hearing stories about everyones in-game experiences. I love hearing ways people think they could share an idea to better or change something about the game. I even love reading threads about bugs and found issues that must be addressed as they keep me up to date on what to look out for myself! I do not love seeing people mad at each other, taking someones original post and removing them from the equation by bickering with another person on their topic. Yeah, those that post angry threads in the first place, thats half of it. I am talking though, about threads where the original topic isn't construed, its lost.

There is nothing to propose, no fix or answer. Angry feelings take time, and I am guessing these angry posts I keep reading are from people who feel well, angry. I simply wanted to point out that it is literally measurable in increase. I have even seen some of my forum role models getting into hissing matches with other forum veterans and that saddens me.

I would be shocked if someone doesn't post here ramming an angry post back at me so far up that I see letters in my eyelids but then that is me being right. Please, if everyone could keep angry posts to angry threads about topics that make you mad this would be such a better place. When I read "insert angry words here" post I can avoid the petty c**p, but when I read "trying to make the game better idea" and read trash talking I can't unsee it.

Love you all, still mean it

  • Nope, still the same.

Edit: These forums aren't that toxic 😲. It's gotten much better since release and since the content road map/dev vids.

  • @xxxrookxxx But there are things which could be changed. These angry feelings are coming for a reason and these should be looked at and dealt with, not just ignored...

You will get angry people in any game but I can honestly say I haven't seen a game with the level of angry threads SoT receives.. and it's for many reasons..:

    1. Content (although kudos to Rare for having a roadmap now)
    2. Many people view the current loss as too great - you can potentially spend the only time you have in the evening to gather loot and then it's gone very quickly... players should be able to get a reward for obtaining loot as well in my opinion
    3. PvP incentive - there isn't a massive amount of incentive so if players sink people for fun they are instantly viewed as 'trolls' (seen several threads with this), why not add some additional incentive to PvP - a baseline reward, a bounty system, a new faction.. I dunno there are some great suggestions on the forum.

There are probably a few more but these are the most common ones I've picked up on.

But yea, TL:DR these angry posts should be looked at not just shrugged off as 'oh another angry person', there is often a common theme running amongst these threads, not to mention not everyone posts angry threads, some people just leave the game entirely without saying a word.

  • Do what I do (most of the time), Click "Ignoring This Thread," and get back to reading the good stuff. Sometimes it's hard not to get dragged back in.

  • @angrycoconut16 you do realize angry is in your name right....haha sorry couldn't resist.

I understand the angry threads, but its bleeding into threads with no pre-exsisting tone and simple suggestions and player creations are being smothered in quite literally, poo. I could copy past for days, the ways people are trying to mold every single post into a witch hunt. I absolutely sympathize with you on the points you made, and those in thread form in the right section with hundreds of views and upvotes and repeated threads are both in their place and SHOULD get Rare's attention for sure.

@Gloog Your Grog mug is half full sir, not half empty! :)

  • @xxxrookxxx haha. And in contrast to that I am very rarely an angry person, the idea of a coconut being angry just amused me and thus the username was born and I can't be bothered to think of anything else :P

Well, that's inappropriate then. I haven't noticed it but probably because if I see those posts I just ignore them. But you are right, anger from the OP of a thread is one thing, but people joining other peoples threads just to be angry and dismissive is not really on. I am certainly finding the latter a big part of this forum community unfortunately.. very dismissive... 'no can't do that it'd ruin this' this wouldn't work because X Y Z' 'nope this is the way the game is, won't change', often without explanation, and rarely with any ways to make an idea work or new suggestions from the people disagreeing. Oh well :P

If you want some happy threads take a look at some of mine, we are coming up with some interesting suggestions for the game :) Although perhaps avoid the 'Reputation, loss, risk and negativity' one as that is definitely a bit more... volatile shall we say.. xD

  • @xxxrookxxx
Its nothing new though just people complaining about the exact same things from 2 weeks ago and tbe 2 weeks before that.
Plus all the new shade thrown at the postponement probably just makes it seem like double.

  • @xXxROOKxXx is the most toxic forum member we have here talking about toxicity. Classic.

    😉😛

  • Have you read the Overwatch forums?

  • @Gloog that makes me sad :(

@CHIEF-BEEF-DSP I have been on several forums over the years for communities I have been a part of. I meant only to bring up the ramp up I have noticed, and I do acknowledge there are plenty of topics and areas where it makes sense.

Edit: sorry I didn't finish what I meant to type. To answer, no I have not been on those forums specifically. Didn't mean to leave that off @CHIEF-BEEF-DSP

  • @gloog As per the Forum Rules we all must remain respectful towards all other community members when posting on the forums. Failure to remain respectful of all community members will result in a temporary ban from the forums.

Please read and abide by the forum rules going forward.

    Thanks!

"I do not love seeing people mad at each other, taking someones original post and removing them from the equation by bickering with another person on their topic."

If we could, we'd adhere to the pirate code... Sadly, there's no way to settle disputes upon the waves when one cannot even ensure one joins the same server as the one we've got disputes with... Except by being on the same crew, which defeats the purpose of settling disputes upon the waves. :P

There has to be some kind of mechanic in the game that allows people to duel, somehow.

"I would be shocked if someone doesn't post here ramming an angry post back at me so far up that I see letters in my eyelids but then that is me being right."

Lol, i'm a frequent victim of baseless anger issues, i know exactly what you're talking about. xD

I could join a conversation and say something like:

Me: "Actually, according to this source, you appear to be wrong regarding that matter... It's more like this than that."
Angry person: "Here's another one coming in with nothing but insults and ad hominems! Typical."

Even though there's not a single trace of insults or ad hominems to be seen in my comment whatsoever... So whenever that happens, all that goes through my head is "Son, i am confuse.". xD

  • DELETED BY AUTHOR due to double-post. oops. xD

You missed the original release of No man's Sky then? ;-p

  • @myrm Yep. Didn't play that. xD I've seen this game compared to that though, so I can imagine there was also a lot of anger with that game :P

Did we not notice the winking smile face and the tongue out smile face?

    Rough.

  • @personalc0ffee Not true! Just be selective of the threads you go to! There are some awesome threads in feedback and suggestions with some really exciting ideas being discussed! I mean obviously they may not come into the game, but it can be really fun talking about them! Take a look at some of the more positive ones :) It's a real shame to lose out on the fun discussions purely because of the angry vocal minority. :(

  • @clumsy-george The hate/toxicity stems from multiple spots actually. The reason people want a PvE server for instance is because of imbalance of the PvP, console vs PC and some people just want to explore with no worries in the world. That is where the PvE portion comes from.

The other complaints of lack of content are pretty self explanatory. People want more, game wasn't released with enough, cost vs content, just isn't right yada yada. It all goes into multiple threads with multiple opinions all fighting against one another. On one side, you have what is deemed "White knights/fanboys." saying the game is perfect. Then you have people who sit in the middle saying content addition isn't a bad thing and then the people sitting on the outside with their signs and rants practically begging for more content. All of this is interwoven and won't fix until RARE themselves fixes the problem.

Toxicity is as strong as the players make it and with so much to be toxic about? Well, you can see where I'm going with this.

  • @clumsy-george Crossplay is something that isn't quite perfected enough to expect people to just jump on board and had the game not been an FPS there wouldn't of been an issue with it. It has PvP, it has crossplay, that results in the insinuation of hacking/cheater/mouse abuser(Dunno why this is a thing.) which then stems toxicity. It's a good idea on paper, but not in actual practice. They could of looked at Shadowrun for reference as to what was going to happen.

  • @personalc0ffee Well, you're not wrong about the game being multiplayer only, you are wrong about the balance though. Comparing PC vs Console is like apples and oranges. PC can move the mouse much faster than an xbox player can swivel their sticks and a mediocre PC player can take down a pro xbox one. This results in the insinuation of hacking because most people "Think" they are that good, but against someone with full control, not half, you're put in your place.

I'm well aware of the model RARE has chosen, but a lot of people are not. PvE would essentially break the game, but in a game with PvP it should always be an option as there are people that just like that type of game. Make it a no reward exploration adventure for kids or something, somethin like that, please everyone.

Value is indeed subjective, but apparently quite a bit of people think the value is overpriced vs the current content load and that creates a problem+more toxic remarks about the entire subject. Had the game released at a 20 dollar price tag or slightly higher and increased overtime as content was released, you'd have less backlash.

  • @personalc0ffee The point of the topic is toxicity, right? See how you're derailing into "I grow tired of this!" type of feeling? That's fine, but it just kind of escalates the problem, you need to just back away from things like that and they tend to kill themselves out. Throwing fuel on the fire just makes it worse. RARE isn't going to change their plan for the game and no one is asking them to. However, supplying feedback of things you are unhappy with is the general reason the forums exist. Hopping down someone's throat with "That isn't the game's design!' and showing some general hostility doesn't fix anything.

They are legit claims of unskilled people, but that's the thing. You can be as skilled as you want on a controller, but you're still only half, if not less than that of someone on PC and that does create an imbalance. Not to mention the 60 fps vs the 30 fps etc. There are legitimate differences that do cause imbalance, but I am not going to argue over things that were already clarified/proven.

  • @xxxrookxxx

Here's my trick to dealing with it...

    ...I'm always angry ;)

Actually I'm just really sarcastic, which probably makes a lot of my posts come off as aggressive or passive aggressive and that probably doesn't help.

Honestly though, I typically only see toxicity sprout up in specific types of threads. Particularly ones about splitting servers between PvE and PvP preference, Crossplay and hacking complaints (for which I've made a handy little instruction thread for Xbox players), and other similar minded threads.

It's a clash of very different communities having to exist in the same game space. I witnessed essentially the same thing in the original Destiny forums concerning the exotic bounties that required some PvP tasks. PvE vs PvP players is kind of an on going trend as much as Console vs PC players is and there's absolutely no sign of it dying off any time soon.

  • If the first pirate legend wouldn‘t have had cheated his way to legendary status, he should be named the „OG Pirate Legend“ and thus we should all abide to his rules and laws. He should‘ve taken the responsibility to look out for his younglings and this forum, but what did we get? Nothing.
And so this game and the forums are left in a state of anarchy and despair.
This is not Nam. We need rules.

  • I'm 10% sarcasm, 20% comedy, 50% concentrated power of autism, 5% memes, 50% failing math grades and 100% poison.

  • @personalc0ffee Well, throwing fuel on the fire kind of means when you keep a "Bad topic" alive, it just creates more debating and toxicity. I am indeed free to disagree, as are you. We all have our opinions afterall.

  • @Kashaarafall @PersonalC0ffee PC player here. We have massive advantages, as many PC players will point out. There are more ways to balance crossplay than to split it up though.

  • @personalc0ffee It has FPS model, accelerated mouse movement vs swivel sticks and you say people have no advantage?...You can't be serious. I am not going to point you to any thread, in one of the one specifically you typed in all caps for three sentences trying to get your point across. I mean, why?

  • @clumsy-george I wouldn't say this is a primary problem though. I think plenty of people understand the game and don't necessarily want a story they just wanted more to do, which is a perfectly valid concern. In addition although PvP was evidently an element of the game perhaps people didn't quite realise that the loss would be 100%.

I've literally heard no one complain that there isn't a story :P

Well they haven't contextualized the fact that loot super easy to get, and you can turn it in if you feel like you might loose it.

  • @angrycoconut16
Hey I can certainly relate to your perspective on the trolling losing hard earned loot ect ect
but its these things that make the game so exciting; if it didnt take a long time to obtain loot it wouldnt be so dramatic (exciting) to lose it and even to discover it - clearly
thats what makes the game so great
your suggestion to change this, in my opinion wold take out the dramatic in finding and stealing treasure - what pirating is all about...
The nature of the game forces people to be ultra cautious, which in turn is exciting makes the game what it is

  • Just wanted to say hi to all the familiar names contributing to this thread!

Seems as though we all like the same sort of thing ;)

Shame we can’t all get along but good to see constructive debate happening.

  • People are already doing it again in this very post!
