I think we have a little problem here guys!

  • So I'm lerking here on the forum and come across this topic;

People paying to get to legend! Is that ok with RARE? | Sea of Thieves Forum

I thought it was an interesting notion and idea that it could be happening. Then, as I'm browsing Ebay for SoT controllers and swag, I start to see some adds for the exact thing ^they were discussing. as I scrolled more and more popped up!

Link to a search I did

Rare, is this even legal?!? Could you even do anything about this? I'm most definitely one of those people like the OP in the other topic above. I never play Pay-to-Win games because of this fact, and is the reason why I LOVE SoT and Rare for making everything that helps with gameplay free and available to all us players.

    What say you guys(Rare)?

  • @van113 i’m glad you posted this, i found the same thing on ebay the other day. Never got around to posting it though, this HAS to be against the terms or something.

That's what I'm saying! They should be able to do some sort of C&D at least!

  • @solidsnakemig That's what these guys are debating over right now too!

  • I don't think it's pay to win per say, since pirate legend in itself doesn't offer any advantage over a new player, but it definitely flys in the face of people playing the game normally and looking forward to being rewarded at the journeys end (start).

Hopefully Rare can investigate and clamp down on it if they deem it as a bannable offense. Perhaps opening a ticket and providing a link to the offending posts will hasten it.

  • @macdoland
I'll have to do that then. Don't know why I didn't do that in the first place... :/ lulz

  • This is really interesting. When I saw the first post I laughed it off. This one brings more merit to the complaint. It's dirty haaha and maybe illegal? Selling a legendary voyage? Come on people jeez.

On the other hand, someone is still physically playing so its not really pay to win at least not in the control of rare. Someone is doing the work. And who would be fool enough to pay for a few voyages haha. Its a sad deal indeed.

Glad some pirates are looking into it though. Thanks guys

  • @van113 i deleted my post and reported it to Rare, the more they know and all that. :)

  • I had a post about this weeks ago.
    Rare are aware.
They take a dim view on it, I am para-phrasing ( As post is deleted )
    RARE responded
"We would rather pirate legends would assist other members to legend through friendship & community"

  • Who cares? This is in almost all video games.

  • I think i need a new job and i have found it. xD

  • @van113 Just clicked on that eBay link and is someone really selling 13k loot from a fort for $27.99?

  • @revanjstone It's basically giving someone else your account though and is more often than not against the terms and conditions in the EULA.
They have been doing this for years - I remember in the early WoW days folks would pay to have their character powerlevelled.

Sadly this normally funds criminal organisations, with gang members running sweat shop style groups of kids playing the game for free or minimum wage. What's more you are providing your details for XBOXLive to some random shady guy on the internet who could do whatever they like with it!

It's also in life as well. I mean, if you work for a business for 30yrs and some kid that joined 5 maybe 10yrs ago gets that same nice promotion that you've been working towards the whole time before you do. It just kinda makes the whole thing seem hollow and cheap, and not overly worth it. I know I've been hype for the journey, and the destination of Legendary Pirate since I was able to play the closed beta. However, with people cheapening the system like this, it kinda ruins the magic. You know?

    LULZ! Right?

  • @Van113
It's how the world works, the lazy rich people are willing to pay for anything to not do it themselves. Money makes the world go round. The good thing is that in this game you won't get any benefit at all for being a pirate legend.

In games like World of Warcraft there were loads of external parties that offered accounts you could buy, leveling services or gold buying. Blizzard decided they could hit two birds with one rock and allowed players to buy gold directly from them and make the leveling much easier. Some publishers like EA even used to include seperate payment option to immediately unlock everything.

I'm not saying I want Rare to head in the same direction as those companies though. I hope they treat these people as the cheaters they are and ban any account that uses such a service. Hopefully a lot of these services will be less profitable when they can no longer AFK multiple accounts to max Athena's Fortune simultaniously.

  • @van113

No, i'm serious, i'm setting up my ebay account right now. Not.

  • @van113 Nope I don't know. Other people ruining their magic has nothing to do with my magic.

You may have just called life hollow, cheap, and not overly worth it 😂

  • If one skull fort completion service is $27.99 and you need about 100 skull forts for pirate legend then I doubt anyone would be willing to pay someone else to level them up until pirate legend ... that's over $2000. 😅

  • @gloog Fasho, then it would seem we have two different ideas of magic/enjoyment, but that's cool though.
OMFG, did I really?? Lulz, oops

  • @sanni
True, true. Though in this thread they're currently debating if you'd even need to get to Pirate Legend to have all the Legendary Gear, and if your over in the U.K. you could just use this guy to help you level up the Athena's level and could potentially unlock all the gear. If what they're saying is true in that thread.

  • Doesn't seem as though the market is that big though, which is a good thing. Almost every MMORPG game I've played has had to suffer from gold farmers, it's just a reality of almost any multiplayer game really.

Doesn't mean I condone it obviously, but I don't see what Rare could do in this case.

  • As others have stated. This happens in every game and this game particular it’s not a big deal because there’s zero progression anyway.

  • Why would someone pay for this?? I really don't understand the mentality. If you don't enjoy playing the game enough to actually earn Legend status, why would you care about getting it? And why on earth would you actually spend real money on it?? It just doesn't make any sense to me... money to burn I guess...

  • they were ok with the first pirate legend so yeah they don't care they already got your money

  • @van113 a dit dans I think we have a little problem here guys! :

A pay-to-win give you power for money, pirate legend title give you no power, only a skin everybody gonna have soon or later.

Why not allow some hardcore sot gamers to make money while playing the game they like?

    Breath....
    LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL

This is a game where we kill each other and take their stuff so we don't have to go get it ourselves. The ENTIRE BLOODY GAME is about screwing each other over to get gold the fastest way possible. Someone laments that he got ganked in port and he's immediately slammed with "but it's a pirate game".

The idea of people selling access to legendary quests (and legendary rewards) is exactly what this game is about.

    What?

The PVP nature of this game is built around the idea of taking away the rewards from someone who's done the work of getting them, if you can. If you're good enough to port camp and make money without sailing around, solving riddles, grinding skellies, why not just organize and shank people coming in? Look at the forums and how often someone lamenting the lack of progress mid-journey is slammed for not accepting that the game is all about surviving until turn-in. And if another pirate profits, hey, that's the game.

I have access to a Legendary Quest. It's well within the spirit of the game community to sell that to the highest bidder.

There are no mechanics in the game itself to foster a community or provide leadership. All of that is done through friend circles, and other outside the game communities. Rare has no business claiming some high horse about players being better than that.

If they want to, then put in some community tools. Put in ways to better say "this is a pirate I want to sail with". Until then, you reap what you sow.

  • @mrosterman You and me are playing two very different games.

  • I think its basically a victimless crime. Someone will only give up their money if they want. Someone is getting paid to play and help someone out. I don't see where it hurts anyone. They don't even become more powerful after wasting their money. And won't it be a laugh when they blow thousands if a skull fort for 30 bucks is the going rate just to be a legend and realize theres nothing new for them to do haha.

    1. Don't buy those, its basically handing over your account to a random person, letting them play your game, then saying they will delete your info. Who would do that? To untrustworthy.

    2. Technically, You are paying for some else to play the game, not for legend, while it does make getting legend easier or done, its not paying for legend status.

  • If this turns out to be legal...
If I can get 2 - 5 bucks for just hopping from server to server to give people a quest that costs me 250 gold and some cosmetics...
Dude, I found my dreamjob! XD

Just so ya'all know, this is sooooooooo not pay2win...
    Pay2lookbetter, yes.
    Pay2win, hell no...

That said, do I think this is a major rip off?
    Yep...
