Kraken is SO underwhelming.

  • I remember sitting on the edge of my seat when the Kraken made it's appearance in Pirates of The Caribbean. Can Rare please re-do the kraken and the way it interacts with ships? Sure we get a few tentacles that suck you in or squeeze your ship, but that's just about it. You shoot it a few times, and sail away like it's no threat at all.

I would like to see a full fledged combat mode where pirates can utilize gun-powder barrels, escape boats, during an attack.

  • @babyfacebeard I think they already stated somewhere the kraken is still a work in progress. Should've finished it and add it later imo, but suppose they needed some buzz for the release...

  • The Kraken is just annoying and not fun because it drops no loot. It's super lame. If they make it drop loot, it could be super amazing.

  • i feel as if the kraken's concept started out as a smaller scaled NPC that was no bigger than two galleons that actually latched onto you ship, damaging the hull and damaging crewmates on board. for some reason, i guess that concept did not work out so well and the devs decided that bigger was better.

i dont think that the encounter needs to have loot or have a head in order to be intesting. going through a storm gives you no reward either so i guess the devs want the kraken to be a force of nature rather than a world boss that offers loot.

with this said, i dont think the Kraken is aggressive enough to be a force of nature. there is only one limb type that can damage your hull and another that grabs your crewmates and attempts to drown while also throwing them. there is a third limb type that spawns near your boat, but does absolutely nothing and another limb type that spawns further away but also does absolutely nothing. all while your ship is slowed. that is not aggressive at all.

storms; now that's aggressive. your boat is consistently flooding and your hull is damaged with every wave. lightning strikes the deck of your ship and the winds are stronger while the waves are higher. your vision is limited and you may even loose your sea legs. on top of all of this, your compasses are not working and your ship has a mind of its own. as a result, we fear the storm. we dont want to go near it. we plot courses around it unless we are daring.

the kraken needs to be this aggressive in order to be called a force of nature. i can go on and on about how this can be implemented, but for that i'm just going to direct you to a concept i made earlier.

  • A snake is scarier than that ridiculous cephalopod. I managed to kill it solo so I agree it needs a major rework. Also when did Kraken(s) have 'mouths' on the end of the tentacles?

The devs themselves have stated during their dev talks that there would be loot associated with defeating the kraken, similar to how the Fort functions. The intent was people would have to team up to kill it (or beat it back), and then decide whether or not to split the loot fairly or kill each other and the last crew standing gets it. They never implemented the loot, though and made it easy enough to defeat with just one crew.

But yes, the Kraken basically needs a complete overhaul on how it's implemented. I personally think they should have left it out of the game (especially since they say themselves it's unfinished) for a bigger content update much further down the road. The Kraken is supposed to be the end all mythical monster from pirate folk lore. We shouldn't be able to just bump into it willy nilly in the first few months of release, let alone be able to walk away more or less unscathed every single time we encounter it.

All that said, Sandra at Daggertooth Outpost says something along the lines of "I got a score to settle with one of them krakens" when asked about the boat she's making. This could imply that there are actually multiple krakens that people contend with frequently, which would explain why the one we all fight is so weak. We're actually all fighting different, small krakens. Perhaps in Sea of Thieves "Kraken" is just the colloquial term for "Sea Monster" and we'll eventually get a raid boss style encounter with the legitimate Kraken.

I'm not saying any of that to justify the weak kraken, it's just some speculation (which is really all we have when trying to determine what Rare is doing with the game).

  • The Kraken definitely needs a serious buff. It should be capable of testing the strength and teamwork of even Veteran crews, and leave greenhorns traumatized.

    Also loot would be nice.

It's a mythological animal mate, there's no rulebook on how Krakens have to look. At least Sea of Thieves version is more original than most Krakens.

  • I personally do not need loot from it (in fact I find the idea utterly stupid), but a tougher challenge, more frequent and the opportunity for it to attack Sloops would be greatly appreciated.

Storms can be tough to sail through, they are hindrance to the ship, but I do not expect a reward from sailing through it, the reward is surviving, same should be for the Kraken.

Agreed, can't remember when he sunked me down, i think was once, im my first week of play while i was in a crew of potatoes. It should give some loot as well. Kraken is easy.

  • @babyfacebeard it should contain some kind of giant black pearl as a reward for killing it as well! instead we get nothing not even a few cannonballs.
