PvP Factions and Bounty Hunting

  • Ahoy me hearties,
how many of us sail the sea looking for one thing?

Sinking ships and taking their plunder!

What if there was a faction, with their own ship and weapon cosmetics, that rewarded xp for sinking ships? First off, people would be more inclined to engage in PvP. So how would you combat/deter from all out chaos?
    Add a Bounty system.

Whenever a ship is attacked, unprovoked, by another crew, they may set a bounty upon the ship with their own gold as reward (whomever starts combat will be susceptible to having a bounty placed on them).
For a set time, a marker, like the Skeleton Fort skull, will float over the marked ship. Sinking this ship would be rewarded with the set gold and xp towards the (or a) PvP faction.
However, if the marked ship can out sail all its pursuers for the set time, it is rewarded with the bounty and xp.

I would break down xp like this:
-Sloop = Castaway's chest (amount of xp)
    -Galleon = Seafarer's chest
    -Sloop Bounty = Marauder's chest
    -Galleon Bounty = Captain's chest

I'd really like to see something like this implemented in the game. It would add an in-game reward and punishment system and the ability to become a Notorious Outlaw or a Vigilant Protector of the Sea of Thieves.

  • lol as I was saying yeah, pics of our toons on bounty hunter posters around the map would be cool

  • @hiblin This would unfairly punish players who act in self defense just because they happened to fire first. There is no way for a program to accurately determine who the aggressor is. It also punishes players for simply playing the game in one of the many ways it was meant, and encouraged, to be played.

  • I feel this is a system that could be implemented, and would definitely encourage people to stop whining about being attacked.

  • I actually really like this idea matey. I think it would be a really cool way to reward and even possibly punish some crews for being too greedy. It would give players a chance to really show off what they've earned and even build a notorious reputation, on the servers. I do think it's a little too early in the game though. What I mean is that interfering with other people's games when they might just want to sail and do merchant quests might be upsetting to some players. But then again, that's why it would be a punishment/reward system to the crews who can pull it off or not. This would also promote more unporovokef pirate like attacks too which I would like to see more of!

  • @lotrmith I don't think this would be unfair to anyone, the game is called sea of thieves. This stuff already happens in the game and it's not broken. this would reward players who wanted to be bounty hunters, or reward the outlaws. Also it might punish both, if ones crew couldn't take out the opposing ship. But that's the point, of this idea I think.

  • @hiblin Dang. You've actually hit upon something we both agree on. lol
But now I'm sure I'll say too much and you'll disagree. lol

I too have suggested a bounty system that only awards rep if both ships are currently doing the bounty quest. It would also deduct points when sinking a ship that isn't doing the bounty faction.

This could be set on/off at any outpost depending on the faction you choose. It would involve some way of telling which ship is doing the bounty or not. Red flags and red name tags seems the most obvious and easiest to implement.

  • @lotrmith actually no ok first 1 could be a let off, 2nd time you do it flag 3rd time your on radar (if no other pirates attacking and beating your streak by this point, Congratualtions your a wanted ship

  • It would result hostile players would just kill everybody, put a bounty on someone that just killed you, hostile player comes to your area kills you and the guy with the bounty, put another bounty, more hostile players show up. Not to mention there just isn't enough ships usually to make a system like this viable. And right now the PvE/PvP rewards are shared which make neither necessary to do.

Let me repeat that because it's one of the few fundamentally different ideas this game put forth. THE PVE AND PVP REWARDS ARE SHARED WHICH MAKE NEITHER NECESSARY TO DO. You don't want to PvP, go on the defensive exclusively and try to work with other players if they are willing. You want to PvP... sharpen your sword.

Once you start incentivizing murder over PvE there is no reason to PvE for PvP players. The fact that there would be no way to do PvE to do this faction would push the game into ship deathmatch everytime they spot someone.

While I would like to see more in this game, this idea has been repeated, is a terrible idea, and will ruin the spirit of player encounters.

  • @admiral-rrrsole Red names would be a great addition. that way if they hideout at an Outpost you could still grab some gold.
I would also like to see a Red Skull float around the bounty ship. It shouldn't be easy to hide as a bounty ship. But maybe less draw distance than the Skeleton Fort Skull.

I think the possibility of being "marked" as a bounty should suffice for attacking other ships.

  • I like it.
