I want to know, if the skull key is taken, does the treasure in the fort disappear?
Does the treasure disappear in general after some time?
What if someone takes the key and then leaves? What happens to the key or the treasure?

Skull Fort Key: Does the treasure disappear if the key is sunk?
If the key is taken and left unattended on another island it will despawn after 3 hours, a streamer I follow was able to confirm that it can last for at least 2.5h but on another occasion when he tried to go back for a key he hid 3h ago it had already despawned.
As for the treasure itself, I believe it only actually despawns if the stronghold it was left in happens to re-activate and a new raid starts there, in which case the loot that was never claimed from the previous raid would despawn and be replaced with the loot generated for the new raid.
If you leave the game while holding a key you will automatically drop it where you logged off, likewise if your entire crew logs out while the key is on your ship then your ship will scuttle as normal and the key will float out once the ship has completely sunk, just like with normal loot items.
Other things to be aware of, it is entirely possible to take a key from one stronghold and use it to open the vault on another stronghold, however since the 2nd stronghold would not have been activated already the vault would be completely empty, meaning the key would have been used up for nothing!
Also as Rare recently admitted, if you are carrying the key or have it on your boat and you happen to get re-instanced into a new server, it's entirely possible that the version of the fort you got the key from on your original server won't actually have any loot in it on the new server.
@luxolites We lured a Galleon after us having the key in hand leaving the fort. We Hid the key on an island in a drive by and proceeded to lure the Galleon. We let them win after giving them a hard time so when we sank they would see no loot and give up. We sailed back from the other side of the map stopped in the island grabbed the key went back to the fort and it was all there. I would assume the loot and key stays until the next for spawns.
