No Mans Sea- What the heck is this game?

  • @mcdoll I'm sure they would have added them in if they were ready. But who knows I like to think Rare want the best for the game.

  • @gamecrazys1976 I've already played with the shark set on my ship in beta, and with conquistador armour in alpha.
Just have a look at this website, a fair few characters are wearing gear or have haircuts that were in the earlier tests but are missing from full release.
Mermaids are the least of it.

  • @made-in-89 I actually have sympathy for those who purchased it. I however tried it on gamepass so this don't affect me. The only reason I didn't buy this game was because there was no way to turn off crossplay. If there had been that option at release, I would be in the category of wasting $60 dollors on an overhyped game. Two weeks before release I started reading and researching about this game. I also started watching interviews, the ama, twitch broadcasts, etc.. to get a grasp on what the game had to offer. From all the information that was available, I thought and was led to assume there would be a lot more to this game than what there is. What I played was 50% of what I expected.

This game is a shell of beautiful scenery. 3 quests that you repeat over and over and over and over and over. $60??? Are you kidding me? No progression system, no story, 1 enemy (skeletons) and nothing to do but the same 3 quests over and over and over and over and over. This is worse than No Man's Sky in terms of content and promises. It is literally No Man's Sea

I've never done the same quest twice and I'm halfway to max level.

    What?
Did you do one treasure map, one directions map, one delivery and one bounty, then just farm forts?
    That's a lot of forts!

Lots of different riddles. Tons of different skeleton waves on many interesting and well thought out environments. Searched and documented dozens of islands and their associated wildlife. And of course probably a dozen skull fort raids with many exciting emergent outcomes.

Did you want them to invent some new style of questing outside of kill tasks and fetch quests?

Hahahaha hahaha oh right. I see what you did there!
We'll, that's an interesting take on "unique"!

Imagine a guy whose job it is to lick stamps for 8 hours a day, telling you that his job was super varied, cos the addresses on the letters were all different!

Typical product of the quick fix generation. If you can't see the value or effort put in to this game, move along

  • @mcdoll

The people who are arguing against you are so misguided. They're completely blinded by fanboi-ism (Or just genuinely shortsighted).

It's really hard to take a lot of these comments seriously. This is a $60 product people. Think about the other games that cost $60 dollars. The Witcher, MGS V, ect. Just do a comparison between the asset count. There is so little here in this sandbox, it's honestly laughable. You should not condone allowing this low level of content for that price.

Why are you defending a company? For what purpose? YOU paid them. Not the other way around. You should expect excellence from your hard earned dollars.

You have to ask yourselves. What the hell did these developers do for 5 years? I mean really. Besides the map which is fairly large. The amount of assets are so low. 5 reskins of each unique model, 3 enemies, 5 critter assets, some randomized character creator, a quest system, and 2 boats. Sounds a lot like early access to me.

I totally understand you're having fun with friends. My friends used to drive around in my van and we would have fun. It's functionally equivalent.

  • @raptorjeff Please, his reviews are just him taking whatever point the media is gawking about and having a tantrum about it. Spent most of his Battlefront 2 review focusing on the lootboxes before he addressed the actual problems with the gameplay.

  • @theothervillain Hell yeah at RDR. It's a great case study, and one of the best games ever made. The only thing I'll say in Rare's favor is that Rockstar is a way bigger studio.

Right, go straight to thinly veiled ad-hominem.
    Great.
The quests are reskins of the same fetch quest.
There are 4 types if you want to be generous and split them into direction rhymes, x maps, bounties and merchant orders.
But to say that each quest is unique is to truly exaggerate the content.
Don't pull the "oh you just lack imagination" card, because it's a blatant cop out and you know it.

Ps. How old am I? What generation do I belong to then? Cos obviously putting up with lacking content is what? Age restricted?

  • This game is going to have tides in player base.

Players are going to leave and come back. As content comes and than they get board again.

It feels like the game was approaching a deadline set and was not able to implement everything needed to make a full game before the set release date.

Life of the game will depend on the rate of new content and quality of this content. I have played games at a much larger state of content but were rushed that failed. This one feels rushed.

Lets see how rare plays their cards.

You've really hit the nail on the head with the content thing, and the fun with mates too.
In fact, you basically summed the entire shebang up perfectly.
    Thanks :)

  • This is worse in terms of promises? Are you kidding? You can literally watch 20 minute videos of endless content promised for No Man's Sky that wasn't in the game. The entire demo video of that dinosaur planet they showed over and over and over was a complete lie. And has anyone ever met another player?

  • @elite-assasin87 I'm pretty sure what you get as a Pirate Legend is quite similar to what you find at the Core of the No Man's Sky Galaxy.

    Take my word for it.

  • @fiir Yea, indeed but they NEED to have some of that. There were about 40 different animals..how about 20 in SoT? They already didn't include the traditional gaming characteristics such as a one player mode story, an online story, stats the increase player performance, loot that is more than cosmetics, trading between chracters...

It needs something. If they want to make player feel like the hero/heroine of their own story it has to feel like an actual world and actual worlds have more than skeletons, sharks, krakens merchants, a hand full of animals and players trying to kill you. How about playing poker and betting your gold on the outcome. It would be a welcome change than some just jacking it from you? How about betting on knife fights between other players? There is a survey on here with SO MANY good ideas it made me realize how much the game is missing.

SoT has good bones but it needs muscle and flesh. I just hope they can add it before its too late.

  • @void-presence http://au.ign.com/articles/2016/10/03/sea-of-thieves-what-the-hell-actually-is-this-game just take a read through this

"Character clothing made out of vanquished enemies (for instance, a Kraken tooth hat)"
"Ship upgrades (cannon types, reinforced hulls or upgraded paddles)"
    "Captain’s cabin designs"

" Chapman’s examples are “Krakens and pirate skeletons, skeletal lords, sea serpents [and] pirate ghosts.”"
"Right, let me tell you about the painting canvas. This is Rare’s take on screenshotting - using this item sees your character render whatever’s onscreen as a gold-framed painting, which exists as an object in everyone’s game, and can be hung up in your ship. "

There's a fair few things that aren't in the game that were mentioned in this article alone. There is also quite a lot of things in the SoT 2016 cinematic trailer that have assets, textures and have been brought into the engine but just aren't in the full game.

These are all thing's that were going to be in the game.

  • @savagetwinky I get what you are saying, I really do. I was a day one Destiny player and I often worried about letting a week go out of fear of falling behind. It sucks being on the RPG grind hampster wheel when you are ready to get off so understand ehy Rare wen another direction.

They also didn't include a bunch of other aspects that keep people gaming such as a story. Which is also ok BUT if you are going to not include so many fundamental gaming elements you have to replace it with a lot more. There are some good original ideas in there but it's still not enough at the moment, in my opinion. Just glancing at the poll that another player put up on this forum is just an example of what they could and I hope will do.

  • @elite-assasin87 only a masochists go for the pirate legend. The progress of getting there should be fun.

  • @theothervillain Wholeheartedly agree. I'm sure they will keep toiling away. They seem to be passionate devs, but it's all about the benjamins. Will there be enough sales? Will game pass bring in adequate revenues? Will Microsoft keep them funded? We'll see :P

  • @void-presence Could you explain us what do you enjoy so ?

Turn your sails on wind ?

Aren't you confuse gameplay and content ?

    Ok gameplay is 100%
But content is actually 0% (12 skins) that's why we fight for on sea.

Next weeks 90% people leave this game if no announcement about real contents aren't done.

I hope you will enjoy turn your sail alone for eternity.

No people = No cash = End, don't forget it before talks about devs promises...

  • @raptorjeff then u came looking for another game. i came looking for having fun with my friends destroying ships and seeking treasures. if u came seeking an rpg then go backways, u only lost 70€ XD

More of what? You said more like more is some other element that isn't a treadmill or story that has a start and a finish. Those aren't any more fundamental than a game with 15 maps and a few game modes of death match.. My point is there is ENOUGH in this game it just lacks structure and allows people to play it the least fun way possible.

There might actually be a fundamental issue with a free roam PvE game with a heavy focus on PvP. Without forcing players to face off you end up with a "lack of content" view. If they had 6 multiplayer ship modes and a few different large maps, people probably wouldn't approach this game like an MMORPG and let their expectations get in the way. The PVE isn't big enough to get in the way of the PVP but if the PVP doesn't get in the way of PVE its a super lack luster game.

  • 'What is this game?'
At the moment, it's a simple game with simple pleasures. IN BETA MODE.
It's not a game with loads of content that you can lose days and weeks at while you sink further into your computer chair. And yeah, it's a bit overpriced. First world problems. If you don't like it, get a refund and play something else.
At the moment, I think it's a gorgeous game that you can dip into every so often with mates for a bit of a lark and a rolluck on the high seas.
Admittedly I'm biased... I kayak the ocean in real life and this game completely satisfies my "gimme that horizon" vibe. I'm someone who's gonna log in once or twice a week for no other reason than to sail massive loop-de-loops around the map while I play my hurdy gurdy at the sunsets and storms. If there's treasure to be had, that's just a bonus.
    Each to their own :)

  • Ok, you're still not understanding that the release is the base to build the game on with users feedback and not some game with a lot of useless content you won't need or even look at. It's a game based on what actually matters in the eyes of the players, and "content" isn't a thing as their wish is to make what WE ask for, not only what THEY decided to add.

Here's what Joe Neate said about this more than a month before the release, and even before the first scale test:

Some of the stuff on the roadmap is so cool that we've just got to do it, but we're deliberately keeping gaps in our content plans to include things based on player's feedback.

  • Let me guess, you are only playing this game because other people are playing it. This game is EXACTLY what the devs said it would be. If you need a review from someone who does nothing but berate games, maybe gaming isn't for you.

  • @thygrrr I won’t take your word for it, that’s how misinformation spreads

  • @hydrofox96 said in No Mans Sea- What the heck is this game?:

... a pity that such a pirate game with the right content has a lot of potential ...

This is kind of the start and end of the argument, isn't it? The game has been out for a week. Just 7 days. Hell, within 48 hours people were complaining.

The game hasn't even had a chance to live up to its potential. If we're 6 months in and nothing has changed, then yes, complain to your heart's content. But don't make the comment that it's not lived up to what it could be when it's only just launched.

I get that I'm a slow gamer, but I'm only just reaching level 20 with Souls and around 15 or so with Gold Hoarders and Merchants, after tens of hours of gameplay. If you're a week in and you're almost halfway through the progression, maybe consider that your disappointment in content is a result of the way you play games, not the game itself?

  • @elite-assasin87 Pirate legend.... meh. No cares were given.

  • @savagetwinky If you think three enemy types, two ships, a handful of merchants and handful of animals is "enough" I think you are being optimistic.

I do agree there is a structure problem but that wouldn't stand out so much if it weren't so shallow. It's basically the same structure as one of the most popular online games ever made, GTAV but its missing the content to give it any longevity.

If there were more going on there wouldn't be a constant stream of trolls

  • @theothervillain said in No Mans Sea- What the heck is this game?:

I think your measuring content in a poor manner. Sea of thieves with just whats in it is completely capable of keeping players engaged without adding more "content" by just tweaking the structure of the content thats. Because again the work that went into this game is clearly ship to ship combat and team work so we just need to encourage pvp, fix some attrition issues, fix some griefing issues... boom you got an amazing game.

You don't need a lot of content in games, just engaging content.

If there were more going on there wouldn't be a constant stream of trolls

Yes it would... that's why people go to forums... until there are just people that are actually engaged with the content as is the feed back right now is reactive and to some extent not really well thought out. They are just taking the structure of other games an applying it to sea of thieves... lets just slap this idea here because its a tried and true convention and I don't want to try to engage in the game that's being presented.

Like the free roam in GTA5 was ruined with mechanics that allowed P2W.. I would not want to apply GTA5's model to this game. But there is similar structure, where there are a few missions in the free roam that cause players to coalesce and attack each other. Except there is server wide notifications to let you know someone has a drug run or something.

But the longevity of GTA5's free roam probably isn't excessively more content than whats here. Its just well presented better and GTA5 fans know how to engage in it. Not to mention it took years to flesh out gta online.

    Don't make me laught xD,
Arrive since the game came out, 26/25/20 in the companies, full custom boat,50K gold and that's it, that's all you can do, farm and farm slower and slower to buy cosmetic things if that's fun for you, but do not make me laugh, enjoy xD

  • The game is an experiment. It's not for everyone. The developers are clearly trying something new. It will evolve over time. This is not your traditional game. You have to play it differently to enjoy it.

  • @savagetwinky Agree to disagree then if you think team PvP boat attacks is enough to keep this game afloat(see what I did there?) As novel as that concept may be it's shallow. The world is shallow, not just in content but in actual interaction with the environment. The game also, at least to me gave the impression of adventuring, Pirates of the Caribbean style. It has its moments but they are few.

I compare it to other games to give an example of what's missing and what it could be. GTAV is not pay to win. They give a path to acquiring large amounts of in game money, other players being trolls provide the road blocks. Yes, as you said the game does alert the whole room to your money making activities...the thing is it will often cost them more in ammo than the reward it gives them for killing you. It's not like they can highjack your delivery and make the payout themselves...which is something SoT does so it incentives attacking other players even more than GTA.

If everyone just did their thing in GTA it would be easy to make enough money to buy whatever you want. P2W (at least in my opinion) is when the developers make it difficult to make money, not the other players.

GTA also gives ways to make money without ever stepping foot in the online chaos such as racing, deathmatches, heist and if they were able to ever figure it out the stock market.

SoT is going to have to offer more because ship battles isn't going to cut it to draw in a large enough player base. Just look at the forums here with people complaining about PvP. If they wanted to make twisted metal in the water they should have focused on that. Even if that were the case they would still be lacking as it stands because there is only TWO ships.

The game offers interesting concept but all at a bare minimum

  • Copy-pasted my reply on Angry Joe's video from youtube:

Constructive critisism here so don't take it personally. Seen plenty of your reviews on other games and it's fun material to watch.

No progression? I guess you already farmed legendary status (cough). Not likely. No endgame, you played more then 5hours? You're 100% sure what's coming when or by the time you get there? Getting 50 with all 3 factions alone will take a good while and there's also lots of commendations you can (and should) unlock. We'll have our own stronghold and from there getting more/better rewards and harder content. Character building part I can somewhat agree on as we already have all the tools/weapons from the start.

I do feel some parts of the game has been rushed, like the Kraken which is only a giant black mudplace with tentacles, easy encounter and no monster if you try check him out under the water. But content is what you make yourself. Doing quests, sinking enemy ships, finding random chests etc for gold which you can only use for cosmetics is an issue I agree on that, but you could have 2 million gold coins but still can't buy your favorite armor set if you didn't play and rep up with your factions.

Bottom line I do not mean any disrespect. The game has flaws but there's things you can do in the game if you have enough fantasy. They will add more stuff. Period. Fishing has already been confirmed. Rare has been very open and honest about what this game is about and what's in it. Seen too many of these rants videos telling they got scamed. Anyway I did not downvote but wanted to share my thoughs.

EDIT: The issues we all had/have with only spawn in with one weapon, unable to sprint, laggy as hell during peak times, gold/rep gains doesn't show etc are being adressed and been announced quickly. In short: Not the best release with little content but a game like this WILL be adding more and more. It's not a game for everyone obviously, especially not for todays insecure, adhd generation "me want instant action and don't need to think a tiny bit" playerbase.

**[NEW]**The last part was a little harsh on my end but wrote it with a friendly smile on my face so take it as a bad joke or sarcasm :)

  • Take Minecraft as a good example, a game I did play alot accually and had alot of fun with some IRL friends when it came out and got some nice HD pack for it. Yes it does have more mobs with different difficulty, if you may but when people think "content" there even with more weapons, armors, mobs...let's think on it shall we?

In the end it will be your fantasy that will make or break the gameplay for yourself. Do you only want to build? Do it. Do you only want to make a small barn for some chests and a bed and go crazy hunting mobs? Do it.

But again, as far as content goes, yes you can upgrade your things with enchanting but will it really be gamechanging? Last boss is the nether dragon which gives you more lvl to enchant...for what you killed the "main" mob in the game. Yes there are other mobs ppl could think as the last one but anyway.

And something I personally felt while playing was I only wanted to play on a High difficulty server. The others...meh you can simply go around in a leather/plate (not diamond) armor and never ever die, unless you fall into some lava.

You see the point here? Will it matter if SoT had more mobs so ppl would feel it has more "content" I leave that to you. You kill the same mobs in some area for...building? Main goal of minecraft is to build, pvp, both or hmm.

No it's what YOU want to do and that makes the content itself. Sorry for the double post.

    Respectfully

    Slanten

  • @elite-assasin87 I promise you, there is nothing but sorrow behind that Legendary title.

    We'll see. :-)
