My Criticism/Take on Sea of Thieves

  • It feels like a $30-$40 game in early access. That in itself is not an insult or anything, but it's a little mind boggling after so many years, and when you're charging $60 for it.

There is fun to be had in the right circumstances, but it's not the kind of fun that has much longevity for a wider audience. It's the same fun that was already available in the betas - all they did was add two other factions with equally simplistic voyages to grind against, and increase the price of the cosmetics tenfold.

Those comments from the former Rare artist on Reddit, who worked on this game, talking about how the devs were well aware that the game mechanics were a bit shallow and bereft of content - but they were overly fixated on fussing over the basics and it slowed development - really resonated with me, and what you see in the "finished" product. It feels like a title where they spent 3.5 years getting the audiovisual experience and ship physics "just right", then realized they didn't really have a mechanically engrossing GAME built around it, and crammed for the final six months to come up with things to do.

Hence, you get waves and spawns of brainless skeletons to fight as the only AI threat; simple radially generated missions and skellie waves as the dev-provided "content"; and endless talk about "creating your own stories" to try and fill in all of the massive remaining gaps.

Their horizontal progression concept is fine with me, but if you're not going to have that standard kind of ascending progression loop, you need to have in-depth mechanics for people to explore. Ship combat is fun, as part of a coordinated galleon crew - at least for now. But past that, what is there? Playing the same four songs on an instrument? Play-acting drinking grog? Solving the incredibly simple "riddles"?

The world can be explored, but it's also bereft of anything to do in it. Find an underwater temple? You can't actually DO anything in it. Every non-loot object is a board, cannonball or banana, and all three will always come in a barrel.

There's talk of another faction being added in a few months, when the first big content update drops. But ask yourself honestly - if this new faction features more simple radial quests like the other three, will that feel like a fresh reason to keep booting up the game? If legendary captaincy just lets you do these tasks in a fancier looking boat, will that?

Let's get positive for a moment: The game is gorgeous. The sense of presence on the boats is perfect. Naval combat can be fun. The kraken and skull forts were neat - the first time I encountered them. The actual act of sailing feels polished.

I want this game to succeed. I pre-ordered it TWO years ago. I bought your hardcover lore book, and your special edition controller. I enjoyed my time with the betas. But boy, right now this game feels like a gleaming sandbox with no toys in it.

I'd like Rare to get out there, and assure people who feel like me, that they are being heard and responded to. Judging by the reviews, I am not alone.

  • Well we had more content, but they cut it from the beta for some reason. (well clothing options and stuff.)

This game really won't last that long, and even the ship 4 player ship design is pretty bad. If they spent that long on ship design that is just sad. I mean you have gun port holes on the side of your ship..when you go inside you don't see them? What the?

The hearsay and nonsense has no place in your review. It sullies your review and makes me not take it seriously.

Do not use personal opinions of others for your review and your opinions. That weakens you argument.

About all I got out of this is that you are upset, want the game to do well, and don't think it's worth $60.

You've offered me about as much depth has SoT has offered you, in this review.

Well that was rambling. If all you got out of everything I wrote is "I'm upset", then you clearly didn't read it at all.

  • @personalc0ffee said in My Criticism/Take on Sea of Thieves:

@shakes-mcqueen Oh I read it just fine. You're using the opinions of others to make your arguments for you, rather than coming up with your own and you feel the game is not worth $60 and you are complaining there's no content.

Dude, what? At no point did I use "opinions of others"...? I said the public comments by a former artist at Rare rang with truth, based on what we can see from the finished product... which is MY opinion.

You just come off as a juvenile loyalist who is beside themselves with aggravation that someone would have the temerity to criticize this game. If you love it, and everything about it, then bully for you - I'd never take that away from you. But the thoroughly mixed reaction to this game suggests there are plenty of people who feel like me, and they are worth listening to. And I'm 100% sure Rare themselves understand that, even if you don't.

  • Great post! I just got into this game not too long ago and so far I think the game is fun! IMO It feels good to play both solo and with friends/randoms and I can't wait to see more added to the game, however, pirate games like these tend to not last so long, at least from what I've seen. I'm not trying to be negative but I haven't come across a pirate, sailing ship game and seen it progress rapidly and then maintain itself for awhile. But I really do want to see this game progress furthermore because its absolutely fantastic! I do agree with you on your opinion of the additional faction being added in and your thoughts on how that will impact the game-play. And As much as I would like to reach the title of pirate legend I really don't want to have to be forced to repeat voyages over and over again. Its fun but mehhh not for long...But anyways overall I'd like to see more things very specific additions like mini-games and such. All of this is my opinion ofcourse but either way great post again! +1

PS: Don't worry about anyone being salty about your opinion. If they didn't like the post they shouldn't have responded in the first place :)

  • @shakes-mcqueen Bang on. I truy wish they'd cement your word to the top of the goddame forum. Pure logical observation, unbiased, targeted towards the improvement of the game.

You will always, ALWAYS get people on this forum like @PersonalC0ffee who have to spit acid at anyone who in anyway suggests their perfect game is anything less than that.#

"Do not use personal opinions of others for your review and your opinions. That weakens your argument.">

No. No it doesn't. It may not strengthen the argument, but it certaintly doesn't discredit it in anway to cite opinions. He could provide proof if you question authenticity, but since the opinion very much reflects logical thought on the subject, it's not overly needed.

I really wish they would start banning the masses of fanboys / trolls that jump on every single 'here are my issues with the game and ideas how to approach them' threads and drown them in opinion.

  • It's like No Man's Sky with a chance of a great moment here and there. There is a wonderful world to explore, and that's part of the point, but strangely there's very little you can actually DO with whatever is in the world. The greatest interaction is with other players, and about 99% of the time they either want to kill you or want nothing to do with you. The missions and the raids are about as simple as they come. I really don't understand why anyone does them. Seems like the game has already devolved into a grind for gold. It's a bit depressing compared to what I hoped for when I started following this title a few years back.

  • @personalc0ffee I can't say I entirely disagree, but it's not always bad practice to mention the opinion of others, if truthful and relevant. And it is verifiable to the extent that anything can be. We can't truly know anything, but we can get pretty good confirmations nonetheless.

The perspective of someone on the inside of a development might be able to reveal issues that those outside cannot see. I personally was wondering how the game could come to be in its release state after 4 years of development under a veteran developer. The suggestion that they got tunnel vision makes sense to me, as it clearly does to the OP, who merely mentions it as reflective material. People can choose not to believe it if they want, but it's still a logical suggestion.

I actually think the foundation is a lot more compelling than No Man's Sky was at launch (no idea what it's like now). It's very social, and the core naval gameplay is fun. The world is also gorgeous, unlike the blurry textures and procedurally generated nothingness of NMS's planets.

But yes, there is a limited comparison, in that your engagement with the world feels like a vast ocean that is only an inch deep. The only way to interact with the world, is by headset or cannonball.

And bafflingly, Rare also chose to mandate grinding to a certain extent, if you want to become a "pirate legend" within your lifetime. Getting to the "end game", and what lays beyond, requires you to be level 50 with all three factions. That requires a LOT of grinding voyages. And it also robs the game of any sense of becoming the "legend" you want to be. Every "pirate legend" on the sea of thieves is apparently going to be just as much of a merchant sailor, as they are a skeleton hunter or goal hoarder.

This feels oddly binary, limited and simplistic, for a game allegedly designed around "players telling stories".

  • 60$? haha, In Europe it costs 86$

But I hope they will update the game continuously. Not every X months with a big update but adding content every week. So it could become one of the greatests games.

Well, multiplayer alone makes it superior, and I do find SoT to be a lot more fun at times, but the inherent flaw is the same. An ocean an inch deep, as you say.

Yeah. I really don't get it. To me a pirate legend is a pirate that is awesome at all things pirate. And to me, button mashing skeletons, fetching chests, and chasing pigs isn't all that pirate. It's raiding, and sailing, and swashbuckling. Swinging from ropes, sliding down a sail by sticking your knife into it. Hijacking and mutiny! Where's the romance in this title? The shirts don't even have any ruffles!
