PVP mode is taking over SOT

  • @starpirat 100% agree with you. We couldn't even leave the docks today without getting taken out by guys we had just befriended. It was a complete waste of time as we only collected 2 chests in 4 hours.
It's boring and frustrating if you are not achieving anything for your time. The only thing I can think of is all the 'kiddies' play hard out in the weekends and to never play SoT then.

  • @search-n-donte said in PVP mode is taking over SOT:

It’s all management in terms of what you’re doing for close respawns. The most annoying thing was sloops coming back over and over while we cleared a skull fort, eventually we found out when you wedge a Galleon sideways between the 2 cannon towers just right you cover both the blind spots with towers AND give your Galleon extra cannons to work with, after that the 3+ sloops left cause it was impossible to sink and had 0 weak spots

We defended a fort like that for over an hour. We ran out of Cannon balls, because the ship came back again and again. If you could loot all supplies on the opponent ship once it goes down, it would be fine :)

  • What motivates me and is fun for me might not be your thing...

...last night we made like 25k gold with raids and voyages in maybe 120 minutes, after that...we just wanted to spend a little time doing pvp and raided the sea for whatever came our way...or was seen at the horizon.

calling them kiddies makes you feel better? Differentiates you from them? You know, when we plunder other crews, we allways try to keep it civil...but when we get called names after we take stuff or sunk someone, thats when we really get into it and watch the mermaids. Dont make it personal, and if you want to really differentiate yourself from us/them...spawn in world of warcraft ;)

Not meaning to argue with you, but I must ask, where is your evidence that MOST players are using the free game pass, rather than having had purchased it as you have stated? Again, I am not saying you are wrong, I am just curious as to how many actually have used this method to play the game and where we can find the figures that support your claim. Thanks.

PvP is taking over a PvP based game? I want a refund reee

Its not advertise as a PVP focused game so not sure why people keep making this comment in fact the words player vs player or pvp is never used and the only mention of ship combat is small and mixed in with all the other aspects on the game taking focus as most gamers prefer PVE with a little pvp.

The sailing with friends and going on adventures, fighting skeleton's and collecting loot etc is what the advertising focuses on so the marketing is at fault if you are saying this is a meant to be a full on team death match pvp game.

I didn´t do a representative survey - but i usually ask my team mates (no fixed crew - i usually try to find an open slot or recruit a team through the discord channels available) - and most of the people i played with didn´t buy the game but they play with the free game pass 14 days trial.

I think opening up the game for game pass wasn´t rares decision but a marketing stunt by microsoft (at least i try to explain the severe server issues with that - rare might have scaled in regards to pre-sales + some, then Microsoft decided to go game pass and the server were overrun)

  • It's is entirely possible to avoid other ships just sail to a different side of the map and do your missions I did this for 6 hour yesterday with the merchants got it from 5 to 20 with out encountering a single player

  • @starpirat

There should be a focus on adding non-pvp servers/game play, but at a very reduced payout.

This is a pirate game, about being pirates.
And people are upset that the threat of pirates exist.

Yes there is a bit of an issue with the face you can be "spawn" killed, where a crew can quickly come back to hunt you and they have nothing to lose, but you have everything to lose (treasure/loot/supplies).

But this is a pirate game, I have had a very balanced experience so far and am sad others have not...

But I see a lot of the people who have negative views so far, not realizing that this is launch week, they got the core base of the game out, now they can focus on balance, loot, rewards, and such.

Do not be upset at Rare, or the other players, Rare put out the platform for an amazing future, and players are playing it as they wish, which is amazing. This is the first dance, and people of different styles are stepping on each other's toes.

Do not leave the dance, just wait until you find others with the same rhythm, and you will see Rare has put out a beautiful starting point.

  • @starpirat Because most of the people got bored of the repetitive same quests over and over again. So PVP is keeping them happy ingame and also keeping the game alive with player numbers.

    Fair enough. :-)

I would have thought that Rare would have some say so in this or, if not, that MS would have to reimburse Rare for the loss of direct sales.

  • This is the description on the official advertising. What do people expect?

"In Sea of Thieves, every sail on the horizon is a crew of real players, but what might their intentions be? Perhaps they’re seeking peaceful parley, plotting to deprive you of your hard-earned plunder or simply itching to enjoy the thrill of a good battle"

  • Tbh the payoff for voyages is kinda low. Much better gold and rep earned by farming incompetent Sloops and Galleons with your crew and setting a PvP meta until a skull fort is spawned and server hop repeat after ^^

  • Well, the quests are not exciting. There is no challenge and it's repetitive. Of cause players start to troll and shoot each other.

  • alt text

  • Unfortunately there are those who just want the game to be about sailing back and forth, doing nothing but catching chickens. No real challenge/rewards involved.

  • @starpirat said in PVP mode is taking over SOT:

    @thefappenin
The problem with that is that everyone knows it, and consequently all go to the skull forts to sink each other to get it. This happened to me yesterday and we were constanly fighting each other and didnt have time to get to the skull fort and everyone is gravitating their to get the same thing and competing with it. attack and defend, and the skellies just look on and laff. You probably get more treasure going to individual islands than skull forts time wise.

This is the entire purpose of the fort. Pull people together and get the mayhem moving... Or have everyone play nice and smash the fort out and share the winningd/kill each other some more.
Don't want to deal with it, sneak around while people are distracted with that. When I solo, I'm generally just sneaking around anyway. Occasional PVP when the mood hits.
Your title makes no sense to me though. There is no PVP mode, just do what you want mode.

  • PvP is literally all there is to do that's dynamic. Sailing to the same islands over and over to capture animals or dig up chests gets boring really quickly. I happily sail round just blasting other ships in the hope they lose a big haul of treasure, it only turns into cosmetics right now anyhoo.

  • this forum seems to turn into a bungie forum

  • @myluchs
I have to agree I am not huge in pvp and play solo 90% of the time rare did a good job ant making the sloop nimble enough to escape 80% of conflict while I agree that I don’t think rare made this game for pvp if you watch the trailers and read some of the achievements it was meant to be a balance of pvp and pve and honestly I think this is the best game I have played in along while I have sailed with a large load of loot (for the small ship) and avoided pvp tactfully and that’s the fun in it

  • There is no PvP "mode" in this game.

Thank goodness pvp is taking over this game. .its a pvp game. Its like saying omg the wetness of the sea is taking it over....the sea is wet.. the pvp game is pvp... stupid analogy but stupid statement so......

There's is no progression whatsoever from PvP, no rewards, no items, gold, ships, titles, nada.

Without PvE, there's no game here and people will leave even faster.

Free game pass will be gone soon for the people getting it for launch. People already leaving from lack of content, getting ganked, nothing to do.

This post is basically the same I've made in Destiny, Destiny 2, The Division and on and on. Enjoy your dead game.

PvP is fun if it's the core game, it's not. Want a new set of sails? Need PvE. New hull? PvE. Clothes? PvE. Commendations? PvE. Titles? PvE.

This game is 95% PvE. Oh, you're just going to steal someone else's chest? Cool, someone needs to do the PvE to get it.

That's exactly why The Division died. PvE to get the loot, then get ganked heading out with it. PvE crew left in droves, endgame died.

I assume you're good and ready to spend hundreds of dollars in microtransactions too for new cosmetic items right?

  • @neller2000 you're assuming the cosmetics are what drives us to play.

Spoiler: They aren't. They're just icing on the cake.

  • @notsid-probably said in PVP mode is taking over SOT:

@neller2000 you're assuming the cosmetics are what drives us to play.

Spoiler: They aren't. They're just icing on the cake.

Spoiler:I'm a PvE player mainly in SoT, all ready to drop hundreds of dollars, if not far more on cosmetics.

I've done it in every single game that had them, 80% and even 90% of a games revenue in today's gaming world comes from microtransactions, that's a fact.

If there's nothing for me to do, there goes my wallet. In my experience the PvP crowd doesn't spend much on cosmetics.

  • As I see it: If the waters are full of hostile PvP players who play the game, JUST to sink other ship and kill other players. The game will soon be boring to those players.

I play the game for the adventure, and the PvE part.

  • @neller2000 you're what we call a content whale. Having things is more important to you than getting them.

  • People saying its a PvP game.

    Really?

    Does it log your stats?
Is there an NPC to assigns PvP quests?
Do you get rewards for PvP player or ship kills?

The answer would be, no, no and no.

Thus, this is not a 'PvP only' game.

  • I say so PVE mode with Ki ships

  • @notsid-probably said in PVP mode is taking over SOT:

@neller2000 you're what we call a content whale. Having things is more important to you than getting them.

Where did you get that stupid idea? You could remove all the cosmetics as far as I'm concerned if there WAS MORE STUFF TO DO.

My point is, without an abundance of PvE content, this game will die, not slowly, not in a year, at most a month or two.

  • @starpirat said in PVP mode is taking over SOT:

@myluchs If u want to get more gold and things, then u have to learn how to fight and turn ur ship in the right way to win the fight and sail back to outpost.

I know how to fight, i just dont want to have to do it constantly for 5 hours of 5 hours of game time, do you get that ???? My game time is my time and thats precious, i want to achieve something, other than sinking ships ?

So escape. I have yet to be in an engagement I did not choose to be in since the game released. I am not talking about server hopping or scuttling, although those are two options you can use.

  • People need to quit being so defensive of PvP. Just because there is an honest criticism of the PvP element and how it is affecting gameplay doesn't mean you need to get so aggressive.

I typically hate PvP, but actually enjoy it in this game. That said, I like it as a distraction. I like it as something else to do.

I don't want it to be the whole reason for logging on.

And @Jedi-Firefly is right - this is a PvE game with PvP elements. Rare mentioned that they wanted this to be the most cooperative open world game out there (paraphrased). Where pirate battles happen, but for the most part we could police ourselves a little bit.

I, luckily, have not had a bad griefing experience. The worst I've experienced is people sinking my ship while I was in an outpost getting drunk. I heard the shots - ran over with a sniper but couldn't hit them.

On the ocean, completely different story. I only get sunk when I'm trying to be friendly. :/

  • So far I been lucky to not have a whole blood l**t galleon yet. Or there will be that just one random who too trigger happy. Most of the time we send one person over to the near by ship especially if docked, check the ship and if don't got treasure leave it alone but if we don't know and you running going to assume there is booty aboard and blast youalt text #OnlyForTheBooty

  • I still think that the PVP in this game is fine and one of the best experiences I have had in a long time.

However I get the respawn issue as well. And while respawning close by once is fine, constantly being able to come back and essentially wear out the victors over resources is not.

Also, a lot of people complain about pointless attacks. And while I think we should not prevent the openness of the PVP I am starting to think that introducing some kind of risk for the attackers might be a good idea.

Right now, a freshly spawned ship without any treasure on it has absolutely no risk attached to it. Essentially hunting down others is low risk, potentially high reward.

Now how about if respawning a ship would actually cost an amount of gold? A side effect would be that people would restock more instead of respawning a freshly stocked ship.

Going into battle this would mean that even the aggressor has something to lose and the more you keep on coming back, the more you stand to lose. I think this would make the whole ship battles more meaningful and one would need to think twice when attacking pointlessly. Can I win this? Is it worth it?
