I hope RARE doesn't knee-jerk redesign this game.

  • Dear people at Rare. Please stick to your guns. If players are talking, good or ill, its a good thing. It means they care about what you've made. The worst thing that could happen is letting this gem of a game be designed by a committee.

  • @jacksonwallop 100% behind this. The vast majority of complaints are due to ignorance of game mechanics or strategies. Don’t be persuaded by ignorant nay sayers lol

  • You sir, have my upvote :)
    100% this

I back this 110% after seeing all of the negative posts, it's one thing I'm really worried about. There are loads of people who love the game.. People usually only post if they have something negative to say. We aren't hearing from everyone who loves it.

  • I'm confused by this, so people asking for different quest variety are the bad people? Is that what you're implying?

No, they're referring to people who want to change the whole structure of the game, not those who simply want more content.

I'd love more content soon, but I'm 100% with OP. The day they change the game from its original vision is the day I stop playing.

People who want things like (death cost, ship upgrades, safe zones, solo only servers and exc... none of these things belong in this game and they are CONSTANTLY asked for by players who had a bad experience due to ignorance.

  • @toastywrath I just want more to do honestly. The outpost saftey etc is silly. You should have tavern fights or people trying to take your loot as you pay. Ship upgrades, I'd be ok with so long as there is a positive and a negative. Such as hull upgrades, take more damage, go slower, etc.

  • I agree with the OP. The short version is, a massive redesign would kill the game. Those who love it for what it is would leave. Those who say they'd love it after a redesign would lose interest shortly after and also leave.

Look at Star Wars Galaxies for a great example about how changing the core game design can kill a gaming community.

  • I think the outpost safety zone request is more out of fear. There is a big fear that eventually people will just sit and camp at outposts to ambush people turning in their loot, but I haven't encountered this at all really.

I agree to a certain extent. Don't just put things in because you see a lot of complaints and decreasing player count. These things are going to happen for any MMO. The mechanics in Sea of Thieves are excellent as is the content. The problem is the depth and amount of content.

That being said, I do think that some of the requests would not hurt the game (such as ship upgrades) as long as it is done well and the appropriate amount of time is taken to develop the system.

  • @kashaarafall ship upgrades would break the game lol. If you’d like I can explain in detail how naval combat works and why any sort of ship upgrades would completely ruin the balance.

I understand a want for more but seriously it’s been out like 3 days...come on. Your looking at it as if the process of acquiring cosmetics are the core concept of the game and it’s not.

It’s an adventure game. Made to bring people together and form their own experiences and stories. Seems most people are so brainwashed by the modern gear grind concept they refuse to sea the true beauty of this game and why people support it whole heartedly.

Sounds like you e had a lame experience so far and if you’d like your welcome to join me or one of the people in my group as we are all rather proficient and always looking for new people to teach.

P.s none of this is meant to be condescending or sarcastic. I’m very direct is all.

  • @kashaarafall No. They just don't want them to redesign things that do work.

I think it’s more ignorance than fear. People just don’t know how to counter strategies like that and instead of learning from mistakes or asking questions they blame everyone and everything besides themselves.

No one likes hearing THEY are the problem lol. It’s pathetic

Also ship upgrades would not work.

People designing or upgrading their ships for speed And manueverability would DOMINATE. That’s just how naval combat works. Nothing else would be used.

Also don’t forget this system is meant to protect newer players from experienced sailors like myself ^.^

  • I 100% agree, im all for adding new stuff to do. I would love it, but i still love the game as it stands, a few things bother me, but i deal with them. i would hate for it to be redesigned, but i wouldnt say no to more content.

  • @jacksonwallop

I wouldn't worry about forum posts. They're a biased sample of the most engaged part of the player base.

No, what I'd worry about is whatever player engagement stats they're gathering behind the scenes, which will likely be telling them over the next week or two, that the engagement level with the game is dropping off a cliff, and the remaining player base is those tolerant to thin PvE content and non-consensual PvP.

Up to them if that's the kind of audience they want.

  • I hope they don't hurry their heads in the sand. I think that they should definitely take steps to address areas that are drawing a lot of negative feedback.

  • @timidobserver they have...hence the tips mega thread. Put in place to educate newer players. It’s their choice to use it or not.

  • Agreed. And I sail alone with no real problems. There's a rhythm you get into with practice. You can totally hold your own. Would love more content, but don't want a redesign.

  • @toastywrath referring to changing the game to address bad feedback not making forum threads.

  • @timidobserver again most of the “bad” feedback (aside from respawn issues) is due to player negligence not poor mechanics. For some reason people refuse to admit it’s their own fault and want to change the game.

  • I don't think anyone really wants a 'massive' redesign of the game ... anyone that is taking the effort to post here has enough interest in the game to want to see it improve. As such they don't want a massive redesign.

They may want certain things adjusted and Rare should look at that ... see if it's 1 feasible in the game as is, 2 how much effort would be required to adjust the issue in question, and 3 if making the adjustment would detrimentally impact other aspects of the game and by how much.

As has been pointed out already what any game company will ultimately pay the most attention to will be the metrics they gather behind the scenes ... what are people actually DOING in the game and is that what they wanted. If they see a major upswing in PvP and a massive drop off of ... say actual PvE loot gathering then there is a problem in the design. Talked to a crew yesterday that never gets voyages and is in it 100% for the PvP if they can steal a chest or item here and there great ... other than that they don't care ... nothing to get but cosmetics so no reason to get gold anyway.

This isn't really playing a Pirate game this is playing a death match arena game with ships and piratey graphics.

Sure, some bad feedback falls into that category. Some doesn't. I am obviously referring to bad feedback that doesn't fall into that category.

  • @timidobserver That’s a vast majority of it but I’ll bite. What feed back specifically.

  • @klikhizz said in I hope RARE doesn't knee-jerk redesign this game.:

I disagree with this statement. Death match is by far not the main focus of this game. It's part of supporting the main focus of being able to tell unique and varied stories about your experiences.

  • @toastywrath I've read and agree with a lot of negative feedback regarding lack of safe zones, cosmetics only progression, shallow voyage fetch quest system, abusable brig system, lack of content in general, lacking cosmetics variety, very bad launch performance.

  • dont redesign it, just keep adding and moving forward. it needs depth. The immersion is there and amazing, just far far too simplistic in terms of things to do!

  • @alymon I was speaking specifically of the crews that are foregoing the loot aspect of the game ... If Rare sees that a majority of players are going that route then they have made a Pirate Themed Arena game ... if that's what they wanted they could have saved a lot of time on NPC, Voyage system and PvE content.

Now ... in the end I don't think that's what things will ultimately show ... I think a majority of the players with that attitude will eventually (hopefully sooner rather than later) move on. You are also likely in the mean time to see players like myself and my wife choosing to lay off the game and see what type of community develops, and or what, if any, adjustments that Rare chooses to make ... because at the moment our experience is that it's a KoS death match game and that doesn't interest us. Which is a shame, because otherwise we like a lot of the game ... it's a lot of the people we find unenjoyable company.

  • @jacksonwallop Yeah feel the same way, its great to take feedback and improve upon things , but if people are unhappy with the game its becuase the game just isn't for them its not going to be for everyone and thats ok. Please don't pull a destiny 2 and try and cater to everyone and end up pleasing almost noone.

  • @jacksonwallop why would they? that costs money and they already have ours so no reason to spend any more

  • @klikhizz It's unfortunate that you are your wife are primarily experiencing it that way. I suspect that some of that is due to the free game pass trial for 14 days and will likely die down some in a month.

  • The underlying framework of the game is fine, but I could see them making changes to certain components, like voyages and maybe reworking the map some to facilitate more variety. The game certainly doesn't need a central story, though, or RPG-esque leveling elements. I'd rather see progression be more content based than character based. Like voyages would be a string of events on different islands with a larger variety of events opening up as players progress through the game, keeping things fresh as you advance and making the lore and flavor more relevant to what you're doing. A lot of suggestions about turning the game into more of an MMO, though, don't really fit with this kind of game. And the PvP components add tension and more opportunities for unique player-driven experiences, so safety shouldn't be a major concern. The game already does little to penalize you for failure. It doesn't set you back, it just wastes your time, but if the game offered more in the way of variety and more for players to do and see in the quests, it would take away a lot of the sting of failure and make the voyages seem less like work and more like a game.

  • Feedback is great and important but even a good suggestion can ruin a game.

  • My thing is I want more TF2 kind of stuff. Community made content as far as cosmetics goes. Or community made events. I love events in games and no one here can say community made cosmetics would be a bad idea. Create a new hat, submit it to Rare and a couple months later it appears in game through the clothing merchants.

Community made content is certainly a reasonable suggestion as long as there is an approval process. It may be challenging given that it's cross platform, but I'm sure they could work out a way to manage it.

  • Totally agree. To many Xbox first party titles are focus group-ed and workshopped to death. The vast majority of people who post on the internet should be ignored.
