Racism and harassment. What to do when it happens?

  • Ok so, me and my friend where sailing the seas. We are german and where chatting over mic. As we came to an outpost our ship got sunk and we got shot a few times. When we rewspawned there came a new ship and with nothing to lose like true Pirates we instantly attacked the guy jumping off the ship with a chest to cash it in our self.
Those people heard us talk and instantly went off with (mod edited) and other things.
I do get to get fired up during game and curse out or use words in the heat, but this was outright NOT RIGHT.
Don't call a german (mod edited). It's clearly racist.

Now, I'd like to know, if there is a system to report players like that? I don't care for trolling or such really, not for harsh words too, but racism clearly doesn't belong into a game.

what I've meant with this was, that I do get, that one gets fired up, sorry for the wrong grammar.

  • @zhin-murakami
Report them via xbox & also report them to rare using the support link below
    https://support.seaofthieves.com/hc/en-gb/requests/new

  • @logansdadtoo thank you

  • @zhin-murakami I didn’t realize Germans were a race... Play in party chat. That’s what I do.

  • Block, ignore, report, whatever.

It's an online game. You have to accept there will be unruly players with their communication.

  • @zhin-murakami last night same thing happened to me!! And it was so anyone can hear it so there was no way to mute it other than mute the tv

  • @lizardheart I'm aware of these kind of players. I do think though, a game is a place supposed to be fun and I don't think I have to accept to be called such a thing. I really don't care for any kind of cursing names, I just ignore such or laugh at it, but specially this is hitting a nerve with me.

  • @rogueaxel It's sad, isn't it? I'm so sick of it.

  • @spent-d which word would you use for it? To say [mod removed] to a german? How would you call that?

  • @zhin-murakami You can mute other crews as well. Other than that, there's really not much else you can do to avoid potentially vitriolic language from people. Just don't let it get to you is the best advice I can give.

  • @lizardheart I had a lot of good encounters with other crews and to 95% I really have fun and laughing while fights. This indeed is something that gets to me and I rather do something and report such players than to mute the 95% of awesome players I could get to know for future interaction. Thank you for your tips. In future I'll just report such players and thankfully they are rare at last still.
I don't know what all will go down with the release, with the people and what kind of people that will add into the game, so I will see about that.

  • @spent-d a dit dans Racism and harassment. What to do when it happens? :

@zhin-murakami I didn’t realize Germans were a race... Play in party chat. That’s what I do.

Wow, your comment adds nothing constructive.

Whether you believe "Germans" to be a race or not, in this case, the insults were clearly aimed towards their ethnicity and nationality. This is a clear violation of XBL Rules and can/should be reported.

Good for you that you play in Party Chat. I applaud your cleverness. I bet no one's thought about that one before.

  • @zhin-murakami me too! Now i of course cant tell the age but it sounded like grown men just throwing out the swears/racist comments to the other players attacking their ship. I had my headset on but if my 6 year old nephew walked in he would hear everything! Terrible!

  • @rogueaxel Yeah. I do get cursing, but some words just shouldn't be used out of respect to the other human being.

  • @siriondb Very nicely said and explained. Thank you.

  • There really needs to be a quicker in-game way to report players, ideally also automatically submitting a chatlog/voice log with it.

  • @cave-waverider that's a nice idea, but I guess it could be misused easily then as well.

  • @zhin-murakami said in Racism and harassment. What to do when it happens?:

@cave-waverider that's a nice idea, but I guess it could be misused easily then as well.

A support person would obviously check the logs and then take appropriate action, just like in any other reputable multiplayer game.

  • @cave-waverider true that. :D

  • @zhin-murakami report, and then mute them, then ignore their existence, the world is full of bigots and racists, i've found it best to just ignore them, i am sorry you had that experience.

  • @jack-littleshoe It was satisfying to shoot one of them before I got killed my self. At last you can do that LOL

  • @Zhin-Murakami Sorry to hear that you had to experience this. One thing to remember is that you can also BLOCK players. This is a great feature as you will never run into them again.

  • @cardshark-360 thank you for that advice and the support at this hour.

  • I notice the [mod removed] is one salty players use just in case the person is streaming. We seen some KIDS in a galley attacking 2 guys in a sloop so we 'sailed' up on em and peppered them with our sloop and all they kept yelling was [mod removed] and that they [mod removed] haha...so we spent over and hour chasing them.. I know we ruined their day of ruining other ppl's day.

  • @cardshark-360 I'm good with reporting and blocking toxic players. My problem is that it can be hard to catch their gamertags. If they are sailing past swearing at you, its hard to see their name.

There is Xbox Recent Players but it would be easier to have something in game that said which crew they are a part of and when you interacted with them. Like a captains log.

  • VOIP and voice communications are not recorded. Reporting a player for offensive words won't do much unless they make a habit of it. M$ has a auto-mod system set up to detect the frequency of player reports and take appropriate action. If you got 50 friends to file a report of harassment on one player, they might get a suspension for a week, or less. Not very effective, especially since they can call M$ support and just argue that they were a target of a prank or something similar, and p**f, suspension lifted.

Your best bet is to realize that there will always be [mod removed] in the world, and they will always say something you don't like, or take offense to, but there's really not much that can be done to stop it besides being proactive yourself and blocking them from interacting with you further.

Its hard when the "Other Crews" doesn't allow a Mute function based off of the proximity chat... It would be nice, to have to not type someones entire name out at a glance. I would forward this to the developers, thanks.

  • Ahoy Pirates,

Thank you all for the discussion of this topic and hats off to the users suggesting the report features of XBL as it's really the best course of action to take. All reports are monitored and if the same user is a repeat offender it comes with consequences.

Now, in regards to some of the discussion taking place above.
I've had to remove a series of comments as they were getting a little personal and I've [mod removed] a bunch of words and references throughout the comments as we do not permit some of the language used here on the Sea of Thieves Forum.

    Thank you all for understanding!

    ...and please remember the Code:

ARTICLE 1: THE SEA CALLS TO ALL
Everyone is welcome on the Sea of Thieves regardless of age, gender, race, sexuality, nationality or creed

    and

ARTICLE 3: DISPUTES ARE SETTLED UPON THE WAVES
None shall quarrel or overly dissent against another crew, but let every engagement be settled by sword, pistol and good seamanship

  • My 2 man sloop was absolutely whipping this 4 man galleon's butt. They tried boarding, ramming etc

I was told to kill myself on multiple occasions, that I was a "bad player" even though we killed them repeatedly with no deaths.

Just take those comments in stride and laugh it off. The anonymity of the internet makes the weakest person, a "b****s".

  • as a german i cant count how many times i being callin as a ..... online.
