toxic players policy?

  • How do you think rare should deal with toxic/disruptive players and cheaters?

Toxic player: Someone who insults other players verbally.

Disruptive player: Someone who actively sabotages his own crew by constantly dropping the anchor, throwing chests into the sea...

    Disclaimer:
I'm not asking because I want to insult someone. I just want to make sure that no one will be surprised by a ban.

    My opinion:
    Toxic behavior: should be ignored.

Disruptive players: If someone is constantly sabotaging his own crew he should be banned for a few days.
Cheaters: Zero tolerance policy, immediat ban of the account forever.

  • @cpt-erebos Well, there is The Pirate Code, and reporting through Xbox Live Services. What the "punishments" are I have no idea.

  • @cpt-erebos if its racist insults then that kind of toxicity should be banned right away

  • Toxicity is not good for games. It destroys games and can drive a game into the ground. Personally if i see anyone on my crew or someonelse's crew making racist or r**e based remarks i will report them to whoever im supposed to report to. I won't tolerate that behavior on or not on my own crew.

  • I think disruptive players shouldn't be banned, that's a bit harsh. Maybe forcing them to sail solo for a while if they can't play nice with others.

Any report feature is likely to be abused by the intended target, toxic disruptive trolls.

  • @ragemonsteruk The type of insult is irrelevant. All insult should be treated equally, and I don't think instant band is at all a good approach. When it comes to verbal abuse, it has to be left to muting. Player will report someone for any reason, so any system based on players reporting othe players will never be effective. If it's something like voice chat, all that should be done is giving tools to players to defend themselves, such as a mute function.

  • @cpt-erebos Pistols at dawn :D

  • @cpt-erebos This is a game about pirates and sailing. It was a hard and very short life. These men and women lived vigorously. And foul and colorful language was a huge part of it. Hence the expression, "cusses like a sailor"?

I am astounded that there is a behavior limit being sought for a game about pirates on the high seas. This isn't Disneyland.

  • A toxic player isn't just about insults. It's a lot of things: harassment, rage, taunt, mockery... in fact everything that make other players quit because of the bad ambience they feel. Who wants to play a game where the others just act like rude kids? That's the poison.

The only cure we have is to avoid them when you feel like the fun is vanishing. Sail away, or leave to another session, but don't play their game as you'll only end up with anger and bad feeling toward the game.

Hopefully, a 70$ game should discourage some of 'em to act that way... maybe?

  • @cpt-erebos well there’s the code to consider....

    Ahoy the code!

We are pirates are we not????

Pirates on this beloved sea... these beloved waters MUST abide by the code!

    Aye!

  • Well if they ban people for being rascist, they ought to ban all the pvp git gud bigots aswell as the holier than thou pve bigots who would say pvp is akin to murder irl. All of the above are extremely, dare I say stupid? People to be.

Joking about the 2nd bans but it’s basically the same thing on a much, much lesser scale

In any case banning people is a last resort that is sometimes warranted, but should never be celebrated. I agree with toxic chat bans on some level, but it’s all about intent imo. Swearing among your crew is different than swearing at someone in anger for example or being rascist or derogatory , and is covered by the “online interactions are not rated” imo but actually being toxic to another person is not protected by the xbox TOS.

what is the difference between racist hatred and normal hatred? you have the right to your opinion, obviously.. but i dont see a difference between calling someone a racial slur and calling them another hateful insult. hate is hate.

i agree with you @Cpt-Erebos, however.. a disruptive player can be just as easily ignored by a quick vote to the brig.. this is assuming the rest of the crew agrees with the judgement.

  • I have mixed feelings on this one. On the one hand, I would hate to have someone make a r**e joke to my sister. On the other hand, this is a pirate game and people should be able to get into character a bit and guess what pirates absolutely love doing... That's right pirates love r**e and booty. These jokes are going to happen... A lot.. and I don't think those people should be banned for it personally.

  • Verbally toxic players should be blocked in your XB matchmaking, reported through the MS system and in the most serious of cases video/audio evidence should be submitted to SoT RARE through the support ticket system.

The brig is for disruptive players applying annoying shenanigans. Seriously disruptive players that impact your game enjoyment should be blocked in your XB matchmaking, optionally using the MS reporting feature for 'unsportsmanlike conduct' for consistent heinous infractions.

    I 100% agree with these options. ^

  • @racmop said in toxic players policy?:

I don't believe this needs to be discussed it's up to rare Microsoft enforce anything it's not up to the community to decide punishment or to discuss it

The policy could cause trouble, if Microsoft was banning people over minor insults, people would lose the money they spend for the game, I'm not saying Microsoft will do something like this, but community input could help Microsoft/Rare to determine how to enforce their rules. And it's not a developer issue, so discussing this topic won't cause any further work for the developers.

Agreed, Microsoft deals with abuse online for the xbox live server. There is absolutely still a need for in game abuse systems like most publishers have! Negative players have definitely influenced my opinions of the systems in play.

  • @racmop Correct, punishment and enforcement are out of our hands. No real need to waste time hashing that out.
However, I think discussing the process and steps that players can take to bring it to the aforementioned entities attention is beneficial. Especially for new players or those ignorant of how these reporting mechanics work. From the examples throughout CB and the Scale tests, opening a topic on the Fo'Rum isn't the best way to handle these complaints nor are the chances of getting satisfaction.

  • As you wish,
    https://www.xbox.com/en-US/Legal/CodeOfConduct?xr=footnav

  • @ragemonsteruk well if you live in the US everything is racist these days... there is a mute option for a reason🤔 folks shouldn’t get banned for invoking their 1st amendment right. we haven’t yet, unlike europe, started convicting people for using their voice as they so choose. don’t tread on me man!

  • @boaton i couldnt give a c**p about your silly amendment c**p, i see it thrown about everywhere nowadays, if rare decides something is toxic then thats up to them

  • @ragemonsteruk well I feel bad for you and your country, it’s like 1984 over there right now😳

  • Look it is simple. Play with your friends and mute those who offend you. Those who want r**e joke role play will get it. Those who are sane and just are playing a game peacefully will get it. The end of the story everyone go about your business.

  • @drbullhammer I’m not a racist, but a devout idiotist. meaning I equalaterally loathe stupid folks regardless of color, race, or creed. if I say Muslims are invading Europe through an epic plan layed our by Albert Pike to usher in WW3. perpetrated by the likes of the last US administration as well as other global provocateurs. would that be racist? especially since we’ve seen what’s happening in Europe right now with “immigrants” and their inability or lack of motivation to assimilate into the cultures that have so graciously shared their country with them. is it racist to face reality, with an unadulterated thirst for unbiased truths through an accurate observation of facts, if it offends a culture or idea?

  • If you are being toxic, Rare should create 'toxic-only lobbies'. If you want to be toxic and ruin the game experience for others, then be thrown into games with ONLY toxic players. They can be put there for a brief period of time. If they have no more reports coming their way, put them back into normal lobbies. If it happens again, back to 'toxic' only lobby.

If you want to be disruptive, again, throw them in the toxic only lobby, for a brief amount of time. The more they be disruptive, the more they get thrown into that lobby.

  • @cpt-erebos I've been getting teens and some kids coming at me with some very racist remarks like the n-word because I picked the darkest female pirate in the game. And they do it constantly. I even get some adults saying things about it sometimes. No matter if it's a game or not, this behavior is unacceptable. And since I'm playing this on PC, I'm not able to report non-crew players since the Xbox app never shows them in the recent player list.

  • toxic behavior shouldn't be ignored. trash talk is always in the spirit of competition. but when it gets racist, sexist, and the extreme vulgar language. come on guys get cleaver with your trash talk. good trash talk is funny, gimme your best 😈

  • Just make a video and report them to Xbox Live.

  • This should be taken up with your crew. Not Rare or Microsoft. Some players like to be the bad guy and just, well, be bad. Some like to be good. Some like to do both, depending on how they want to play at the time.

As far as cheating (I've still yet to see any), there has been a report feature for years and years. If you feel someone is modding, you can report them.

Also, there are in-game options. You can brig said bad guy. You can also leave and find another crew.

Work it out in game. That is part of the game. A fun and exciting part, I might add.

  • @bartimaeu

From the context of your message I am guessing what r**e means. You suggested pirates love that and booty. However, a quick look at the Pirate code article on Wikipedia shows a couple of sample pirate codes:

    No boy or woman to be allowed amongst them. If any man were to be found seducing any of the latter sex, and carried her to sea, disguised, he was to suffer death;

    and...

If at any time you meet with a prudent Woman, that Man that offers to meddle with her, without her Consent, shall suffer present Death

There is never a valid reason in game to bring up race, sex, orientation etc. Plenty of ways to banter without that c**p

Of course! I didn't mean things like that should be ignored. That goes along with the reporting a player via Microsoft's report option.

  • "It's a pirate game" is a s**t excuse, and you know it.

    It's a pirate GAME.
    Not a PIRATE game.
    Not an excuse to discriminate.
    Not an excuse to harass.
Not an excuse to act like, well... a pirate.
Just like GTA isn't an excuse to break the law.

Because YOU are (most likely) not a pirate.
The fictional character that you control is a pirate.
YOU are just some p**z playing a video game.

On a side note: If you want to invoke your constitutional rights, do yourself a favor and read them first. The whole thing, not just the title.

  • This an interesting discussion.

The xbox and pc online gaming communities both have a toxicity problem that transcends individual games and platforms. The reporting mechanisms haven't solved the issue, reporting players doesn't appear to get results.

Personally I like the fact that Rare have tried to bake playing nice with others into SoT, but the problem with online toxicity remains.

We all know that Sony won't allow crossplay because of money, but when you look at how toxic people on both PC and xbox can be it does lend credibility to their argument.

I mean how would Sony punish someone on xbox for racially abusing a PS4 player?

If we really want progress in the gaming industry and to be able to enjoy things like crossplay (I know that's a whole issue itself in SoT) we're all going to have to look at how we behave towards each other online.

  • RARE and MS already did something to prevent toxicity. If you're going to get offended at the first offense, then I suggest growing iron skin because the internet is infested with people designed to make you mad. They will insult you, your kin and your very being just because they find it funny and it helps them cope with their own insecurities. The countermeasure is muting. Try it, it helps.
