Crowdsourcing Localization

  • Ahoy fellow pirates & Rare,

As we've all seen, time and time again that many people ask for localization.
I'm one of those who prefer everything in their original language, however, I completely understand why others want localization.

Probably all the major languages will be supported at one point or another but what about the rest of the world?
Aren't we all about breaking down barriers here?

Voice dubbing is, without a doubt, hard work & requires tons of effort.
Text translation, on the other hand, doesn't require anything other than multilingual volunteers & their keyboards.

For example: Habitica (an online task management application that takes the form of a role-playing game) used Transifex (a tool that enables translation crowdsourcing, see how it works here) to support languages from all around the world.
The tool of choice is irrelevant here, what matters is what it accomplishes.

Now, the resulting translations may or may not be of top notch quality but if we enable people with limited language knowledge to join us in Sea of Thieves isn't that better for everyone involved?
For Microsoft: It's more revenue and exposure for Xbox & Win10
For Rare: It's more revenue and the joy of having more gamers play their game
For the community: It's more people to play with (worst case, it's more loot to plunder 😂🏴‍☠️)

Rare only needs to upload formatted strings in English and volunteers would take care of the rest.
The details would be up to Rare of course, it can be open for all or for chosen volunteers, etc.

What do you think? Would you volunteer?
I, for one, volunteer for Turkish translation if this gets the green light.

  • @vitaefinis it could be an awesome idea!, especially since for what we have seen most of the game is in text form, and could give strength to the community

  • @ant-heuser-kush ah alright, good to know :) edited my post, thanks.

  • Nice idea since the translation would take a lot of time if i speak for my language. I would also volunteer for Turkish language but Microsoft already knows that i’m ready :P

  • I did some work for Parkitect this way - I really enjoyed it, though the site they chose was not the best in my opinion (it was far too easy for people to ignore the suggested translations, resulting in a lot of repeat entries).

I would love to participate in something like this here.

  • I already translated some Open Source projects on Github (via i18n Framework). I think I'd help with German here.

  • I would also volunteer for Turkish language! I hope this get's a green light!

  • I would volunteer for Danish. Just sign me up.

  • @vitaefinis Sure man, i'm here for help you. I'm Italian.

  • Sign me up also, would volunteer for Portuguese, Brasilian and Spanish.

  • I wish I could help out with the Czech translation...

  • I wouldn't mind giving a hand, if translation for Italian is needed!

  • Volunteer for Italian here! :) already worked on some stuff before! :D

  • @retto-elbaroda Also Czech fan that is able to help with translation!

  • I wouldn't mind giving a helping hand with Romanian, if needed.

  • Korean translator here~
and a very good one at that.

And let me remind you how important localization is in regards to capturing a market.

  • Will really love to help having Romanian in the game also. Our country/language is really ignored by any gaming company. There are so few games available in Romanian.

  • @liby-ki 한국어!

  • @wirebox lol i wasn't expecting that, but yeah!

unfortunately, either Rare already has localization covered, or they just don't plan on doing any localization.

I just hope it is the former, as localization would be good for both customers (in terms of accessibility) AND the company (in terms of sales). Believe me, lots of Koreans get turned off by a game for not being in Korean. And I believe this applies to many other countries as well. And that's very understandable, because what fun is a game when it is incomprehensible?
