boat to boat communications.

  • some ideas.
    *semaphore flags.
    *white flag.
    *peace flag.
*megaphone (for projecting voice to another boat from a distance).
*dial message on lantern that can flicker the message in Morse Code.

  • Agree 100%. Yesterday I ran into a solo sloop and a full galleon at the same time. Since I too was in a solo sloop I really wanted to get the other sloop to help me sink the galleon, but everybody just started firing at everybody so I just rolled out.

  • Dont know what the full version will be like but im kinda hoping the ships have some kinda signal system or something.
I will be a solo player so it would be nice to see another solo player and signal " i wont bug you if you dont bug me" or " hey want to talk and team up?" Etc.

  • Id like to see some use of flags, just for the emmersion value at least. With the megaphone...how far of a distance? As proximity chat goes pretty far both verbally and using the non comms wheel.

  • @aprovoked-mango I didn't quite like the chat wheel. Seemed limited and hard to use. Perhaps some custom text chat wheel would be good.
Voice chat was not working for me in beta. I think i heard other people with headsets where having trouble too even with the headset voice audio setting.

i would say the megaphone could work just out of the range of cannon fire to be effective

  • Agree with this. Allowing us to at least show some intent to another player would be useful. I ran into another solo player yesterday and we never came close to each other to communicate. Initially I ran from him, but I needed to land on the island so I moved in to dock and he ran. This could have been avoided if we could have flags to show our intent. Now having this function does not mean people will abide by it and not attack if they are flying a friendly flag. For most players, especially the solo ones, I think this would be beneficial.

  • @kukkapants Admittedly its abit late now but incase theres an open beta this info might be useful ifyou come across ingame chat issues.

In the audio settings you want to change proximity to non directional and output to headphones. You can also adjust the volumes for music, sfx voices etc. If you ever come across a crew where two of you cant hear each other but everyone else is fine, just unplug the mic and then plug it back in. No idea what it is but that reset clears the "block". Almost all audio issues ive ever had with the mic have been fixed with reinserting the mic.

The comms wheel is difficult, I much prefer voice but Ive made a habit of using it, it gets more fluid with use but admittedly its not the most effective to begin with until you know all the layout and what item changes what phrase etc. Some custom lines would be great, would have to be a from a preselect dictionary of words to avoid the abuse but would be useful to make your own phrase!

Have a search for a thread, if there isnt one open, create your own feedback on the wheel. If theres some overlooked issues it would be good for the devs to see.

  • Agree on this too, sometimes we would pass a ship with no bad intentions, even tried to have some fun playing music.

Approached playing music, wave at them, tried to tell them over the mic.
But every time the other boat assumed we wanted to fight so they started shooting.

Having some way of showing good will would be a great way of having some more friendly encounters!

I would be really interested to see what we as a community could come up with to communicate things like this without extra tools from the developers. There are a ton of lanterns on each ship. It would be really cool to see the community slowly come up with rules about lit lanterns. For example, having the front lantern lit might mean you want to trade, or that you only fire if fired upon. The bells are another means of communication. 1 bell "we come in peace," 2 bells "we're on our guard, steer clear unless you want a fight," and of course 3 bells for white walkers.

Naturally, 30% of the time, people would use those communication methods to try to trick people, but it could still be interesting.

    Yeah interactable flags, absolutely.
I want the proximity chat to be reduced a bit to a more realistic distance (might even help slightly with game/server performance!) and would be really great for it to take into account the environment surrounding the player talking. In the cave on Lone Cove? Opposing players above on the island shouldn't be able to hear you. Underwater? A voice modification to make the voice "underwaterey" could be pretty neat.
The echoey modification that's supposed to play when in a cave needs lots of improvement though. Both to the "echoey-ness" and to the accuracy of when it is used.

  • Captain's could offer parlez (have their crows nest bell light up to signal) if the other accepts then friendly fire is turned on between crews. The parlez costs a deposit of 2,000 gold to each Captain. Parlez ends when the distance between ships exceeds 400m. The Captain whose crew breaks the ceasefire by damaging the other Ship then instantly loses their deposit to the other Captain.

  • All these are great ideas, I started a thread yesterday purposing exclusive long range communication for sloops. My idea would a message in a bottle or perhaps carrier parrot you could use to request a meeting (time and island) with another sloop to make teaming up easier for protection against griefer gallions. You could of course deny the request or simply use it as a means of deception but more often than not I think the solo players would see the benefit of grouping together.

  • Definitely! So many times I wanted to somehow signal I was friendly, but always ended up being shot at.
