Hourglass Supplies

  • A recent locked thread brought up a thought - while it is nice not to have to take a break to resupply after each fight, I think the amount of supplies that the Hourglass crate gives you is a little excessive - what if, perhaps, they just gave you a refresher on your supplies, up to the starting ship levels of materials?

  • @flashkannon5118 you obviously have never run out of supplies while on a brig or gally match with these crates still. No they do not give to many supplies. As a daily HG player this was a big W for the HG community. They do not need to lower anything in the crates

  • @elmo6842

This is true, in part because the crew I run with is less inclined to use the Hourglass than I am, but I have never run out of these supplies on a brig or galleon. Might I ask, is it all the supplies you run out of, or just one specific variety, like the fruit or the throwables?

  • @flashkannon5118 I've run out of all but a couple pieces of food before. Im a high leveled daily hg player and have been in big sweaty fights that take a lot of patience and can't miss a beat. I've even had other crews try to come steal wood from us they ran out of that. So I don't play on sloop so I can't speak on that end but these definitely don't need to be reduced on brig or gally

  • Interested to hear your reasoning behind this. Have you had a negative experience as a result of you/ an opponent having excessive supplies in hourglass?

  • They increased it because “majority” hourglass only players complain about having 0 supplies. Mind you this was before the circle.
Now everyone gets crazy amounts and if they win, they get more and more. The fix wasn’t a fix for winners, only for losers.

LOL ...inter...esting way to put it LOL. Look at it this way @Flashkannon5118 , if you get 3rd partied, you definitely have more than enough supplies to deal with it.

Thanks! Given that you run out of supplies even with the current amount given, would you argue for them adding more? Is a scarcity of supplies more or less interesting to you than having all you need? Have you had many sloop-based hourglass battles? In my opinion, at least, I have had some interesting encounters where scarcity comes into play.

And, I suppose I should have given the reason I was thinking on the matter - a much greater portion of the gameplay used to be exploring islands - the outposts, small islands you pass, inactive forts, etc - there was treasure washed up on the shore, of course, but there was also the ever-necessary Supply issue. Of course, scrounging for supplies takes time, but the lower amounts of supplies meant two things - the windmill tilters wouldn't have a huge supply to pester you with each time they sailed at you fresh with no time spent to gather, and that engaging or not engaging was a decision that carried more weight.

Mind you, they've included a lot of supply inflation mechanics, from buying supplies at outposts, to the buyable merchant crates to the Sea Forts, but the locked thread got me thinking specifically about Hourglass as a quick source of large amounts of supplies.

  • @flashkannon5118 I don't play sloop HG anymore I did that only to get both my curses solo to learn HG without someones help then went to brig and gally so I can't speak on that. I do know many people that play sloop though and they say matches can be very long and they do go through tons of supplies as well. I think the amount that is given is the right amount. Once you get to a point and run out then you hope it's you that still had the items needed to win otherwise GG's to the winning team. When I solo sloop on adventure I get my items from sea forts and around outposts but I'm not out there looking to just fight everyone one the seas I'm just commedation hunting so I'm not going to hop into an HG match just for a crate of supplies. Sometimes depending what I'm working on I don't even collect supplies I keep the default on me cause what do I really care at that point. I will go and grab something if I need it eventually. I make sure I have enough wood and cannons to get me by.
So to me HG definitely needs these supplies. I don't think they should at this point add or reduce them and I do not want to see them boost any supplies you get in adventure mode. Those you can go hunt down the way it has always been.

It would be nice if that somehow didn't flow over into adventure mode, like the crates disappear at the end or something. Because, as a primary adventure mode player, unless you'reafter something in particular like cursed cannonballs or a bone caller, you typically don't need to go hunting down supplies much if at all - with the exception of Megalodons and Ancient Megalodons, events will either drop crates of supplies or float barrel clusters with supplies. It's... the random barrel clusters are one thing fair enough, but it does remove some of the friction involved.

  • What if they cap the amount of supplies your ship can carry (including in crates)? The cap could be high enough that you've definitely got more than enough for your next fight, but you can't carry so many that you'll never need to think about restocking until you sink. So after a fight (or maybe two/ three depending on how the fight goes), you probably need to think about restocking.

This way, hourglass players can carry on unimpeded (as they will naturally restock after each fight by harvesting a decent stack of supplies from the loser), but adventure/ open world players would need to regularly check their supply levels and restock at islands/ barrels/ sea forts as they use their supplies up.

Bonus idea, maybe going over your cap could cause your boat to sit lower in the water (as if you've been hit by a ballast ball).
