Can't Load Game Due to Xbox Network Sign In

  • I had purchased Sea of Thieves in 2024 on Steam and had successfully installed and played it on my computer for many months. I stopped playing for a while as I moved on to some other games, but last night decided to pick things back up again with Sea of Thieves to check out all the new content. When I launch the game, it opens and eventually gets to the "Start", "Sign Out", or "Exit to Desktop" selection, but before you can select any of those, a window appears asking me to sign in to my Microsoft account. My email address is already pre-populated and it's just asking for my password. I then key in my password and click "Next", and immediately it says "Please retry with a different device or other authentication method to sign in. For more details, please see this link.". When clicking the link, it's just a bunch of suggestions regarding resetting your password, signing out and back in again, or trying to pick a different account etc.... Nothing of any help.

Over the next 3 hours, I did all of the following, and to no success, as even this morning, the issue is still present.

    1. I tried to click "Sign in with a different Microsoft Account" just to see what would happen, even though I only have one Microsoft account, but when I click this, the window only flickers for a brief moment and doesn't allow me to change my email. So my original email, which is still accurate is still pre-populated as the login and it's still just asking me for the password. Odd.
    2. I then tried just closing out of the Microsoft window - where it was asking me to sign in, but it just keeps popping back up and won't allow me to click "Start" to play the game. The window just keeps popping up.
    3. To verify my password is correct, I opened a web browser, went to https://account.microsoft.com/account, as well as https://www.xbox.com/en-US/live, and I was able to successfully login to each with the same credential I was using when prompted within Sea of Thieves.
    4. I then tried signing out of the Xbox App, Microsoft Store App, and the Microsoft website where I had just logged in to test, to make sure I was signed out of anything/everything associated with my account on this computer. I also remembered that I have a Minecraft account associated to this same credential, so I opened Minecraft and logged out from the launcher there as well. Next, I opened the Windows Credential Manager, and purged the saved credential I had on file for this Microsoft account. I then re-opened the https://account.microsoft.com/account website, chose "Forgot my Password", and went through the process of resetting my password. Once the password was successfully changed, I opened the Xbox App, Microsoft Store App, and Minecraft, and was successfully able to get signed back in. I then re-launched Sea of Thieves and when I got to the main menu the window to login to my Microsoft account popped up again and it still had my email pre-populated, which was still correct, so I entered the password but it returned the same error again.
    5. I then checked for any/all Microsoft Store updates, Windows updates, and Nvidia driver updates, and there were a few that needed updating, including the Xbox app, so I got all those updated and then tried to play Sea of Thieves again, but the same issue occurred.
    6. At this point, I know my credential is working, I know I have all the updates for my computer installed, I know that one of my other games (Minecraft) that uses this same credential is working, so I think it's fair to say that the issue now is simply just with Sea of Thieves. Due to this, I decided to purge the games installation from my computer. I uninstalled it and combed the C:\ drive for any leftover files and didn't see any. I rebooted my computer, then re-downloaded Sea of Thieves from Steam from scratch. It took overnight for the download to complete and this morning it was completed and ready to play. I loaded up the game, the window appeared again asking me to login and my Microsoft email was still pre-populated...??? I don't know how/why that is still cached in there, especially after an uninstall/re-install, and when I key in the password the same issue occurs. Also, I still can't even change the account if I wanted, because when I select to use a different Microsoft account, the window just flickers but never actually lets me change anything.

    Update
    7. I found some info googling regarding deleting the following entries in the Credential Manager for the Xbox Network to clear the cache: Find and remove any credentials labeled "XBL ticket" or containing "1717113201". I had all of those on my computer, so I removed them. I then loaded the game, and it had finally cleared my cached Microsoft credential and was asking me for my email & password, cool! So I typed in my email, then password, and same error occurred :(. Next, I called my brother, as he also has Sea of Thieves and actively plays. I got his credentials to his Microsoft account and tried to login as him, and the same error occurs! This isn't a problem linked to just my account - has to be something with the game or the computer, I just don't know what. So frustrating!
    8. I've also now created an entirely new user in Windows, made it an administrator, had to re-authenticate to Steam, Xbox App, and the Microsoft Store. I then loaded the game, entered my email and password, same issue. Unreal.

At this point I don't know what else to do or try other than completely re-installing Windows, which I am not willing to do just to play this game. Something is either broken within the game, a corrupted cache that I can't seem to find/clear, but I am out of ideas at this point. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

  • I finally got it to work after spending another 5 hours on this. I logged into my account at https://account.microsoft.com/account, and went to the Security section for my account. I removed my password from my account by switching the authentication method to what Microsoft calls "Passwordless". I then had to create a 6-digit pin of my choice to go Passwordless. Moving forward, in order to login, I now have to use the 6-digit PIN I created. I then loaded up the game, and this time when the Microsoft window popped up to login, it asked me how I wanted to authenticate - via a Face Scan, password, Authenticator App QR code, or more options. I picked "more options" and while there was no option to input a PIN, there was an option to send a code to my email. So I sent the code to my email and then entered the code, and finally, it took! The game then loaded and I could finally play. I then closed out of the game and re-opened it to see if it cached the credentials, as I don't want to have to do this each time, and it remembered me, so the 2nd time I launched the game it just went straight in to the main game menu and I could play. Weee!

It's pretty crazy to me that I had to do all of this, and change the way in which I login just to get this game to work. Now that I've done this, I bet Minecraft as well as all my other places I've logged in are going to have to use the same method. I am thinking about switching it back later tonight from the PIN/Email to using the Password I had originally been using since 2024 and maybe it will work now that I've gotten the game to at least successfully login for the first time in nearly 2 years. If I do this and it goes back to having the same issue, then I guess going Passwordless to play Sea of Thieves is what I'll have to do for my Microsoft account and adjust to this new way of login.

I hope this helps someone else who's stuck in this same manner, as in all the hours I spent Googling this issue, I never found 1 single person with the EXACT issue I was having. There were many who had issues close to mine, but never exact, and all the 20+ fixes I tried for those that were sort of similar to mine didn't help; only what I wrote here resolved my specific issue. I think the root issue is that something got jumbled up within Sea of Thieves that made the game no longer want to accept my original way of authenticating, and when I logged into the Microsoft website via my web browser and literally changed my accounts security to no longer use a password, it then forced the login prompt in Sea of Thieves to let go of whatever is was holding on to or stuck on, and allowed me to use a different method of authenticating, which it accepted and then allowed me to login.

  • Final Update

Tonight, I switched my Microsoft account back to having a Password again and got rid of the Passwordless change I had made earlier in the day which had finally allowed me to get through the Xbox Network sign in. I was surprised when I rebooted my computer and launched both the Xbox App and Microsoft Store that it didn't ask me to log back in again; so I just went with things. I then launched Sea of Thieves and the game started right away without even prompting for my password, odd... I figured it would at least ask me for the password since I had changed my account back to a Password based authentication over Passwordless...?

I then rebooted my computer a second time, and that's when all heck broke loose. The Xbox App, Microsoft Store, Steam, Discord, and a whole host of other things were now all completely logged out of... Da heck...? So I opened the Windows Credential Manager and ALL my entries that used my Microsoft account had been removed! I think changing it back from Passwordless to Passworded just took time to propagate down to my machine, so after the 2nd reboot everything now required the Password to get back in. So I had to re-sign back in to all of them from scratch and I had no issues in doing so. Also, the Windows Credential Manager now had re-populated all the original 40+ entries that were missing. Last, I launched Sea of Thieves and it too now required me to log back in, but with my Password, which was correct, but everything worked and it logged me in! Wee! I then rebooted my PC several more times and opened all my games & apps just to be sure things were keeping/happy, and they were. I am finally 100% back to normal and out of the woods!

I just got through a 2.5 hour play session and had a lot of fun. This will be my last post to this topic as I am finally done testing and troubleshooting - all is well again.

    Cheers!
