Developer Update [4/15/2026]

  • The Highlights

    • Explains the 'confusion' of what Season 20 is going to be and what to come.
Frankly, idk why it was confusing; it's exactly what they said. Custom server main focus with mild changes and game health update.
    • Cosmetic update/change/imbalance/fix etc.
    • Streaming settings update/changes
Nothing special here; just common sense and similar ideas they always go with.
    • As mentioned, Game Health follow up
Just fixes here and there, focusing on that mainly over S20. As many of you players wanted (whole season focus)
    • Experimental raid voyage removal.
"Should I stay or should I go" Yeah yeah, this really a no brainer. Just either update the loot, make those raids noticable so we can not contest, or remove them.
    • All World Events having Chest of Fortune. (Random)
I think this is the best idea. Besides raids, make the CoF appear in a WE with no noticeable cloud and chance of getting one. The thought of the unknown crosses my mind, like digging up a X from a message in a bottle and finding a Reaper chest or Athena.

and that is all there is. Season 20 is a Custom Server, Bug fixing season with mild changes.
    It what everyone desired.

  • I suppose, of what was mentioned, I am most excited by there being, even if it is only one chest, a chance of different loot in a fort. Their standardization of loot has removed what little mystery and surprise the standard voyages retained.

  • Experimental Raid Voyage Elimination (world events specifically)

This part is awesome. Since their testing days, people wanted these to be visibly different than the emergent world events.

This solution (killing them) is even better in my opinion. This is a step in the right direction of eliminating diving as a whole.

Chest of Fortune RNG in all world events

Feels like we've been asking for this since it finished making its rotation through the world events many seasons ago.

You're listening, Rare. Albeit way late...but we appreciate it nevertheless. I'll drop some duckets in the Emporium to show my appreciation.

  • @flashkannon5118 Don’t believe a word of it honestly, there just telling us what we wanna hear.

  • „While I‘d love to sit here and tease, that there is a surprise coming in the showcase, thats not our plan (…) the addition of new content into the sandbox is going to remain a key part of how we operate Sea of Thieves (…)“

Overall I think, this was a pretty good Developer Update. Good news regarding the way cosmetics will be introduced in the future, an experimental remove of raid voyages and at least a little glimpse on how they want to handle future updates.

To me, the quote above was the most important information. Glad to hear, that game isn’t in maintenance mode and that there will be new content in the future. Even though there won’t be a big announcement at the upcoming showcase (… didn’t really expect that anyway).

I am one who enjoys the not knowing until the last min. Like what they did with Pirates Life, only a small few knew and not Insiders.

Frankly, that they knew the correct things to say indicates at the least that they are listening and understand, and have spent time formulating an intelligent reply. We'll see how it ends up, but it's a lot more than we've been getting recently. I'm happy to reward the behavior I want to see.

  • Weird video. Explained the "confusion" by then just saying "Yup it's exactly what you thought, no content" It's still a giant mystery what the point of season20 even is. This game heavily depends on its reward structure but custom seas being user generated by nature can't have any reward structure. And in terms of what would be "act 2 & 3" being "listening mode" Yea because we have so much evidence of them actually listening and how fast they actually update the game based off feed back. Shrinking hourglass circles was a requested add from the week it was released. The streaming changes sadly coming a bit too late as even the most dedicated SoT streamers are kinda over the way updates have been handled all these years. A "too little too late" change can't undo 8+ years of damage done by ignoring the streamers cries for help. Raid voyage removal I am behind. I hate being forced to leave the server to do content. However they have had several limited events that only functioned through the raiding system. Problem is some of that raid loot is rare outside of raiding. They tend to not think changes like this through so how are they addressing that? Chest of Fortune on all world events... Isn't that my idea that you yourself dumped on me over? Oh but since they are making it a high chance to happen rather than a guarantee that's somehow better? I would argue that sure, if we want to not make it a guarantee then at least have something else spawn if the CoF doesn't IE some of the raid loot that will no longer be obtainable due to its removal. All in all I think they are highly over estimating how much people will care about custom seas. It's a great concept. But like everything Rare has done not well thought out. Making it free at least means most still around will dip their toes into checking it out, but the number of truly creative people who might do fun things with it seems small. Especially as it is a limited editor not a fullon map editor. Allowing us to design a whole giant island and placing obstacle courses, puzzles, basically craft your own tall tale... That could have been cool. However what we are getting is the ability to spawn random loot, force move ships and players around a map, turn on and off events and weather conditions etc. I haven't been on insiders forever and don't follow those notes any more but honestly doubt they have the option in custom seas to straight up craft your own tall tales. Now that would be something.

  • I don't believe custom servers are going to save Sea of Thieves, and are likely a waste of development time and resources.
    They're a gimmick.
It seems a fair bit like they're panicking and throwing whatever they can at a wall and hoping it sticks.

    I hope I'm wrong.

The Chest of Fortune change, however, is long overdue.
