Calling all SOTTERS, UNITE!

  • The forums are going to turn into an absolute warzone, and it will be certain that moderators will try and close tickets on the grounds of "too many posts on the same topic" like what they did for the Doubloon reset drama. However, it now seems that Rare is catering to their partners/boatswains and forgetting the average player. Moreover, with the current X (Twitter) drama surrounding certain streamers, any hope for dev/player trust is gone... AGAIN. Whether you agree with this stance or not, it should be heavily noted that the community is becoming extremely partisan, which not only harms the community's ability to have fun and spread positivity, but now the devs have to take into consideration this divide just to make community events.

What needs to happen is that Rare needs to establish direct communication with the player-base. Rare devs need to do more than surveys. They need to directly reach out to players by using the SOT Official discord and other official social platforms. I have now found the most optimized way to incorporate this idea. After every update or major announcement, Rare should release community-ran discussions using their resources to try and understand how the community feels about each update. They should allow not only SOT Partners, but devoted streamers into these talks so that they can find out from multiple perspectives what went right and wrong with their updates.

However, there's no need for an absolute warzone! I'm all for healthy constructive critism...

How do you see this open dialogue working? How many members? Who picks the members? When someone feels left out and claims they are being ignored... can they join?

Is it one big voice chat session?

Interested to see how you think this could logistically work.

You think you have, but you really haven't, that's a lot of noise to filter from different ideologies of where the game should be.
The easiest way is to simply make basic polls/surveys, sorry but that's just how it is.

Doing what you suggest; pulling from Forums/SoT Discord (Just lol at that suggestion) can easily create an echo chamber [Mod edit - please keep misinformation out of this space]

They should allow not only SOT Partners, but devoted streamers into these talks so that they can find out from multiple perspectives what went right and wrong with their updates.

As mentioned above, that takes too much time, resources, and attention span to get out of.
You do know that RARE recently stated they were assembling a team of dedicated players for feedback content right? Wonder where that's been at recently... Right. Point. Proven.

  • @broadsideban

They are backed by Microsoft. They have resources. I think they should just do their normal community direct with guest speakers being the streamers via a Zoom call.

Idk if you are being sarcastic at this point or not lol.

lol yeah sure they have the 'resources' (Money). But what can do they do with said ''resources'' if the dev team continue to do the wrong thing over and over again.
Microsoft see a declining game that is Sea of Thieves and have ZERO issues squeezing the budget leading to lay offs.

@Musicmee comment below mine literally stole words out of my mouth. This so much.

  • @karminiumsot Sadly, a backing from Microsoft doesn't lead to endless pots of money...

And given the current gaming landscape - with studio closures and game cancellations it's not just on this side of the fence either.

Sudios really need to be careful where they spend their time and pennies.

  • @musicmee Why is it that they seem to be not listening though. I think people are getting worried because it appears our feedback is falling on deaf ears.

@musicmee Why is it that they seem to be not listening though. I think people are getting worried because it appears our feedback is falling on deaf ears.

LTLoot (Former Comp player) said it perfectly years ago before the general peeps like you finally catch up to it all.

RARE create the game THEY want to create First, and then the players input matter as the follow up (Your opinion literally comes second).

Wether that is true or not, who knows, but that quote always stuck with me..
What surprises me to this day is the comp players in this game where always years ahead knowing the what the outcome of this game was going to be (Continued failures from devs, and lack of listening), yet the gaslighting from the average player silenced them, because ''You're being negative!!11!!!'' ''That's not true''' Rhetorics..
I guess you are more susceptible when your whole Community has been alt+f4 without a care in the world by a dev team that wants to claim that they care so much about the community's in this game.

Like I said in a previous comment, enjoy the decline while it lasts, RARE are going to continue putting on their facade masks when in reality they really don't care about you or the person next to you outside of the very rare occasion of massive outcry's that MIGHT force them to do little changes here and there.

  • @broadsideban That's true, but players have to come into play at some point.

  • @karminiumsot said in Calling all SOTTERS, UNITE!:

This means little in 2026. Microsoft, like most tech companies, do not care about investing in gaming right now. Gaming investments have more or less plateaued and isn't seeing the same sort of growth it was years ago. AI is where all the investment is going, until that bubble bursts (and it will). As gamers, we unfortunately have to face the reality that it's going to be a dry few years in the AAA space (apart from GTA 6). Indie gaming is looking good, where they can secure funding. But it's not good out there overall.

  • @tintintheboy From the conversations I see... its 100% not being ignored.

However, SOTs issue from day one has been that it means so many different things to each and every single member of the community.

To some its a PvP haven, to others its a story telling paridise... to some a place to go take screenshots and hang out with friends.

And they've tried to please everyone and when you try to be everything to everyone... sometimes IT loses that "special thing"

But all I can say... the faces Drew pulls in that video when it pains him to say it hasn't gone well, isn't put on for camera, they feel it, they truly do.

Also... trying to turn the tide on an 8 year old game that is still in motion is one heck of a ship to do a hand brake turn on.

MEGA sorry for the ramble there!

  • @musicmee What is wanting you to apologise for rambling, it's fine bro! We forgive you!

I think what's going on is that something is preventing them from delivering good updates. Hopefully eventually (season 20) we will get something fruitful.

  • @realstyli I just realised this could be the source of our issues. Microsoft is focused on AI, not really gaming. It could be inferred from this that SOT is being put on the "backburner" as rare calls it in terms of funds.

  • @tintintheboy I'll be honest...

It's a lot of old code, a lot of loose ends that need tying up...

The story/lore/sandbox team and those behind the scenes like Mike Chapman have places they want to take the story. The people on the team that are all about the PvP want to go hard with that mode and making it the best it can be.

They just want to deliver so much in so many areas... but it's still a relatively small team and as stated above with the landscape not looking so great in recent years... Its going to be a tricky rut to get out of.

  • @musicmee I personally don't see it working, and don't see a point in it. And I'm not trying to be overly negative here, just realistic.

The Devs, as far as I can tell, don't spend any amount of time on these Forums responding directly to feedback, or suggestions. They also do not communicate what constitutes good "Feedback" or "Suggestions". So no one has any idea if what they're suggesting is even feasible for the team to look into. Considering how long people have been waiting for simple Cosmetic Pre-sets, in a game in which Cosmetics are the ONLY reward, I honestly have no faith in that this conversation would even bear the slightest bit of fruit.

Realistically, what would anyone have to say in this situation? A game of nearly a decade old, and it hasn't changed all that much since I played back at launch, honestly. Imagine if the Cosmetic Pre-Sets got brought up in that conversation? That would put Rare on the spot; Either having to confirm or deny their ability to do it, or the usual, "We'll look into it" and it's never heard from again.

Now, don't get me wrong; It's a great idea in theory, actually having communication. But this is Rare, and this is Microsoft. Neither is going to put themselves in a situation in which they could potentially be made to look foolish.

  • @musicmee I see, I think you're right. I just hope that something will come, something fruitful that'll get us out of this patch.

I think ever since the announcement of the cancellation of season 19 things haven't gone down so well. I will admit I personally think we are judging Rare's every move to much but some of it isn't without valid reason.

Surely something will come soon that'll save us, I still have hope.

  • @xdreegan That's fair!

I think with it being such a lean team they put more of their time into gathering feedback and suggestions rather than a dedicated person or team replying to every feedback on the Forum/Discord/Twitter/X.

A lot of the Hourglass improvements coming have 100% been born out of things that have been requested/reported to them from the community though (even if slighly delayed).

But 100% can see the valid citism there... It often feels like you are shouting into the void!

  • @tintintheboy Same, same!

See if this change is going to come there will need to be a break... a content drought of some kind.

Back when the game when through it's last rough patch players were calling out for a Season of "just bug fixes". I think this is where we may need to get to... a Season of resetting and laying cards out on the table and being pragmatic and open... And probably making some even tougher changes/cuts.

  • @xdreegan said

That's the overall sentiment now from a lot of players, funny how the tides have changed this past year alone. Welcome to the club...
Dw though, the continuous RARE [mod removed] defenders are working over time though... (Not realizing they do the most damage in all reality to the game).

The Devs, as far as I can tell, don't spend any amount of time on these Forums responding directly to feedback, or suggestions. They also do not communicate what constitutes good "Feedback" or "Suggestions". So no one has any idea if what they're suggesting is even feasible for the team to look into.

They gave up on replying and engaging in posts/threads. Maybe they will throw a bone comment once every 6 months to keep up the illusion on some awful post suggestion typed out by a 12 yearold. It's hard to disagree with you, at best they ''lurk'' which is a scapegoat comment to say devs still look at forums, just ZERO proof if they even do lurk.
That's like me saying ''Ill think about it honey'' translation: I'm not going to do it.

Considering how long people have been waiting for simple Cosmetic Pre-sets, in a game in which Cosmetics are the ONLY reward, I honestly have no faith in that this conversation would even bear the slightest bit of fruit.

I agree, It's pathetic at this point that it's not even a feature after 8 years.
I thought it would of come with Captaincy, nope, Pirate profiles, nope... What the actual... RARE?

Realistically, what would anyone have to say in this situation? A game of nearly a decade old, and it hasn't changed all that much since I played back at launch, honestly. Heavily disagree with that point. I just think the core mechanics of the game still being the same is giving you that illusion.
I once agree with your 2nd point, RARE won't be doing what the OP suggested, because it will put them in a nasty spot that just make them look lazy and incompetent how basic features are and will probably never be added to the game. We can already predict the professional subject switching that will happen out of thin air.

Now, don't get me wrong; It's a great idea in theory, actually having communication. But this is Rare, and this is Microsoft. Neither is going to put themselves in a situation in which they could potentially be made to look foolish.

Above point with that statement, so yes.

  • @musicmee Yeah, I agree on that, we need a quality of life season where it "resets" the game, a season where it adds what desperately needs fixing (exploits, bugs). Just giving the developers that time to rest as well, they have been working hard!

  • @tintintheboy said

Just giving the developers that time to rest as well, they have been working hard!

    Uh-huh:

"... and then we kind of did nothing for several years and it kind of got a little bit out of control."

  • @broadsideban That's a fake quote, not real sir.

  • @broadsideban That quote needs context... (The bit you missed out)...

    But good meme-ability!

  • @musicmee said in Calling all SOTTERS, UNITE!:

I hate this. Why does it always have to be a choice between total radio silence, or someone responding to EVERYTHING.

What I'm asking for is so much simpler than this: Having someone on the team who can communicate with players to provide GUIDANCE. And I know they can do this to some degree, because I've seen Mods being straight up panthers pouncing on topics that try to stray away from the "Vision of a Shared World". I'm actually a HUGE FAN of this, because it lets me know "Hey, it's a total waste of time to think about stuff like this, because it's straight up not in the cards". I cannot tell you how awesome it is to have a clearly defined line like this, and I wish there was more of it.

Once that's done enough times, the community will be largely educated enough that you won't have to hammer home that point anymore, or the community will do it FOR YOU when it's brought up.

  • @xdreegan That's fair...

Those canned responses have been driven by the team at Rare and not something we just made up to silence users either. So I can see how those kinds of things can be both a blessing - with more calrity on the vision. and a curse, when users feel they have been silenced.

The dev update videos have been changed to try and fill that gap... but the negative news drops havent helped.

I would love a more story/lore/blue sky thinking style fireside chat to see the vision and where that is currently. But i know that will take time away from other priorities so I'm not gonna push too hard!

  • eating popcorn while fishing in SoT
Meanwhile us normal players are just chilling.

  • @burnbacon It better be sweet!

If it's bacon flavour I don't wanna know!

  • @burnbacon You can provide criticism while also chilling. They're not mutually exclusive.

  • @musicmee

    Offers bucket Smells fishy....

  • @xdreegan

Nothing to provide, but shake my head and facepalm.
OP seems wanting to start something over a matter that really isnt a big deal. It only a social media issue, while actual gamers who dont visit reddit, read twitter about the news of a game or care. Still continue to play and look forward to what new good or bad free content is added.

Also seems it all about Streamers....who are not or should main focus of any feedback, as they only care about views. No views = No money. They started something for sake of it.

Meanwhile, us simple causals are enjoying the game while everyone else seems to be on a melt down. Reels in Stormfish before lightning strikes (typed all this on my phone.)

  • @burnbacon “Isn’t really a big deal” and it’s SoT DEVELOPERS favoring their partners over the common player and admitting they have lied to us by doing nothing, yea totally not a big deal.

  • How do you explain to people that flying dragons isn't what this game is about, and would make the core design pointless? They keep accusing the developers of not listening, and not reading the forums, because if they did, dragons would be announced.

Are these players being ignored? No, but yet they feel like they are, and don't understand the core design of this game. It doesn't matter to them though, and they vent on the forum how we all should be given the developer's phone numbers to call them and demand why dragons can't be added.

In the real world, I can go to a steak house and throw an absolute fit that they don't have vegan options. It wouldn't go very well for me I promise you that, and me accusing the manager of not listening to me would be laughable. Just because a steak house doesn't have vegan options doesn't mean they aren't listening. It means this isn't the establishment for that. A lot of players don't get this concept unfortunately and will still make their accusations that they're not listening.

No one liked it when Bambi's mother died. No one like it when Mufasa died. No one liked it when Harry Potter's owl died. No one liked it when Boramir died. Everyone loved it when Joffrey died. This game tells a story too, one that you can partake in and have your own stories and memories within it. They set the stage, you provide the scenes with friends and amazing players. You may not like parts of the story, and that's ok. But asking for the developer's phone numbers and for us to be consulted when they make an announcement, is overstepping the boundary in my opinion.

  • @europa4033

    So...dont be a Karen :P

  • @burnbacon said in Calling all SOTTERS, UNITE!:

    @europa4033

    So...dont be a Karen :P

Exactly. The developers shouldn't require our approval on whatever direction they want to take it. I'm not interested in getting a Facebook message from a developer asking me if Ashen Garrisons are alright to add to the game.
