Weapon Balancing (My Opinions)

  • I'd like to say that the current state of most personal weaponry + proposed changes to the Blunderbuss is great.

The Blunderbuss to me was the only weapon in my opinion that felt like a war crime to use or have used against you. I can confidently say it was simply not balanced and everyone knew that.

The other 2 weapons that people claim to be OP like the sword, daggers, and on rare occasion the EoR I completely disagree with, as I think they're exactly where they should be. They're fun, versatile, and easy to use as every weapon should be.

My opinion is that strong weapons should not be nerfed MOST of the time, but to buff weaker weapons so everything feels powerful and useful.

This is a list of every personal weapon and my perception of how balanced they are:

    • Blunderbuss = Soon to be well-balanced

    • Eye of Reach = Well-Balanced. Truly.

    • Throwing Knives = Well-balanced. It's good for low-skill players and awesome for high-skill players. They feel satisfying to use.

    • Sword = Well-balanced, but could use a buff to lunge damage given the risk of almost guaranteed death if you miss the lunge. The sword lunge should do 70+ dmg as I always dodge it and kill the swordsman pretty easily. The sword is really only strong against inexperienced players; as double gunners typically wipe the floor with swordlords 9 times out of 10.

    • Pistol = Mediocre weapon for the most part. I'll say it's a "good" weapon whereas the EoR is a "great" weapon.. at any range. Do not recommend nerfing EoR for this reason, but recommend buffing the pistol's rate of fire and swap-speed to compete against throwing knives and EoR better. The pistol is fun and easy to use, but needs just a tad more Ooomph!

    • Double-Barreled Pistol = Soon to be well-balanced.
Soon the blunderbuss and double-barreled pistol will do the same amount of damage, except the DBP will do it consistently and with better range and accuracy. The blunderbuss will hold the niche of dealing powerful knock-back which will make it more fun, and more more silly to use and less frustrating to have used against you as you aren't being sent to the Ferryman instantly just because you lagged or your weapon hit-regged during CQB.

  • I haven't used the Throwing Knives yet but I've seen others claim (and I agree) the hit box is too big.

I would take away the sword lunge freeze time. That is way too long, as it is. You can't even turn in place.

And, drum roll for all the flak I'm going to get for this one, I would take away the ability to quick scope/cancel animation anything. Aim-and-fire is awesome, but when it goes faster than the eye can see, that's just poor mechanics, imo.

Throwing Knife hit box is quite big lol, but given how much they hit-reg, how laggy and unstable the game can be, how chaotic fighting aboard rocking ships is and how casual most players are, I'd be willing to argue it's a necessary evil (just for now) to make it even remotely relevant in PvP across the varying skill levels in the player-base, as well as console players.

I agree with removing the sword lunge freeze time. It's out-dated and too punishing. You're sitting there telegraphing your next move for like 3 seconds straight too. All that risk and heavy punishment just to do 2 sword-swipes worth of damage and some knock-back. M1 spamming is safer and more effective, albeit a bit boring for you and annoying for the opponent.

I think it's ok that the EoR can quickscope, but I agree that all animation cancelling shouldn't be apart of the game. It makes things clunky.. raises the skill cap slightly and unnecessary, and most of all doesn't feel.. genuine. Quickscoping is sadly a normal staple across video games, whereas animation cancelling is essentially an exploit. I don't like winning just because I know an exploit that my opponent hasn't learned or mastered yet.

  • Throwing knifes definitely need the hitbox adjusting, I've seen the knifes go past my character then disappear along with my health, how are you supposed to dodge if you can't figure out whens safe and whens not 😂

  • Pistol could definitely use a buff. My go to loadout used to be pistol/sword, but throwing knives are way better than the pistol and feel more fun to use.

Pistol could just deal EoR damage at this point, with dropoff happening earlier. The upside will be faster rate of fire and faster reload. There should never be a reason to use EoR over the pistol at close/midrange.

  • @hefty-henri This 👆

  • Are we playing a different game?

    • The throwing knifes are insanely broken, a hitbox 4 times your pirate and it's the only weapon where you don't have time to eat in between shots.
    • The blunder was not broken, it was the only weapon that could save you from an unbalanced fight or a spawn camp, like a 3v1. All i'm gonna say is good luck to the average player that gets boarded, no one shots anymore
  • The EoR is NOT well balanced. Truly.

The EoR should not quick scope with perfect center screen accuracy in 0.2 seconds. Sniper rifles are supposed to take slightly longer to ads than other weapons and they generally have weapon sway so that quick scoping is slightly more challenging. The BIGGEST reason I always stick to playing against console players only is because of how much easier it is to hit ship-to-ship snipes while being subject to the waves rocking the ship with a mouse versus a controller.

Throwing knives can be thrown a little too fast in succession IMO.

I wish rapiers, cutlasses and heavy swords all played slightly differently ie swing speed, swings in a combo, stun length, lunge charge time, and damage per swing/lunge.

Rapiers swing fastest, 20 damage per swing, 4 swing combo, lunge charges faster than cutlass and does 60 damage.

Cutlasses buff sword lunge damage to 75 everything else stays the same.

Heavy swords swing slowest, 35 damage per swing, two swing combo, lunge charges slower than cutlass but does 90 damage.

I would love to see your ideas on the different sword types. Different fighting styles depending on the sword type. Excellent.

  • @cpt-juke5781 Getting one-blundered by spawn campers is the worst feeling in pvp. Not being able to do this and instead having the chance to survive and fight back will make everything much more enjoyable. One-shots shouldn't be a thing in this game.

  • @cpt-juke5781

I think everyone forgets that it's not just noobs who can one-shot somebody with a blunderbuss, but also veteran players. It's just the veteran players will be better at it. That weapon wasn't saving you, it was killing you without giving you a chance.

All weapons you can use against others can be used against you.

    --

When the blunderbuss one-shot nerf takes place, the throwing knives can have their hit box reduced since their main competitor was the blunderbuss at the start.

    1. The blunderbuss was the only weapon with a wide cone of fire. You don't even have to really aim.

    2. It's the only one-shot kill weapon in the game.

    3. It has a strong knockback even if you only get hit by 1 pellet.

If you want to know why the throwing knives are crazy right now, it's because of the blunderbuss. The other weapons have to be balanced around it.

The EoR plays like a sniper from a conventional modern FPS which the vast majority of gamers are used to. Pirate themed with a modern FPS feel. The sniper translates well if you are coming from other shooters.

From a game development perspective, in an attempt to please the largest crowd; it makes a lot of sense and should stay how it is. However, I don't feel the pistol is a good equal. I would say the pistol could use a damage buff to do between 60dmg-70dmg and a 10%-20% reload speed increase.

When everything is on roughly the same level, the combat will feel fair and exciting.

  • @olde-grim-jack

I think it would be cool if the EoR could pierce through players and PvE as a unique ability in exchange for a slight decrease in ads speed.
