The Brig is the worst ship after the last update

  • Hello dear pirates,

Today I would like to talk to you about a topic that is not talked about enough and which I think urgently needs to be changed. I am actually a silent reader and with almost 2000 hours in Sea of Thieves, I mainly turn to PVP with my well-crafted crew on the brigantine.
The brigantine is my favorite ship type and for different reasons. In the last updates over the years, all ships have experienced certain advantages and disadvantages. The sloop needs two chain shots and it doesn't matter much if you have holes in the back, in optimal wind conditions the brig was the fastest ship and when the wind came from behind, only the galleon could overtake and yes, it was also the best ship for me to win against the other ship types. The Galleon is practically a tank and with a well trained crew is practically unsinkable, plus it only has an effect if you shoot at the middle deck if too much water runs in at the bottom. In addition, I think the respawn of the crew members is from 5 seconds to three seconds for the fourth crew member (but I'm not sure about that). - If something is wrong here, I am sorry.

So every ship has its advantages and disadvantages and that's a good thing. Even though the brig was the fastest in the optimal wind conditions, it also had several disadvantages, such as the fact that it almost doesn't matter where you hit the brig, it will have holes (except for the helm, masts,...) and the probability of hitting a crew member is high. But since the last update, I've noticed massively what a problem it is to fight against other types of ships now, because the brig takes a very long time to get going and a sloop or a galleon is hard or impossible to catch up with despite well-managed sails. The other way round, of course, you can now catch up with the brig without any problems as a sloop or galleon. It doesn't matter how badly the sails are set on the ships or whether the galleon only has two out of three sails set - the brig can hardly catch up and can't run away either, and you really notice that.

I don't enjoy fighting the ships at all anymore when I feel like I'm being penalized with both good and bad sails on the brigantine, while the sloop and especially the galleon are barely penalized, if at all.

    Here's an example:

A few days ago, I fought a sloop that got away from us. We were able to catch up with them very slowly, but even though the sloop's sails were always the wrong way round, we could only follow slowly. When they tacked, she turned in circles almost immediately, while the brigantine was too slow to tack.

Yesterday and last week I fought galleons several times: we chased the galleons for 40 minutes with perfectly aligned sails, while some of the galleons only had two sails set, which were also misaligned, and we couldn't get close to them.

I think everyone should have the option to run or fight, and that's not possible at the moment. As for the latest update, the brigantine is really at a disadvantage now and I hope this will be changed somehow and I'd love to hear other PVP brigantine players' opinions on what they think of it.

PS: I'm bad at English and hope this is correct in terms of content xD

This is how it was for years while fighting against a brig. It was op and it wasn't just op, for some reason it was getting faster and faster as time went on, in all directions.

They nerfed popcorning which was a huge advantage for the already op brig.

The galleon has been pretty balanced all along and the sloop is just a floating tuna can.

The only thing that changed is that the brig is a little less of a complete wrecking machine in adventure when against experienced sloopers.

  • Interesting perspective. I've felt like lots of crews still using brig speed as a crutch where they are running from my sloop and can just go corner to corner of the map at higher speed in majority of scenarios.

  • About time the brig was knocked off its spot. It’s obvious it was the meta ship for the perfect blend of speed, manoeuvrability, and cannon power, especially the speed part. Now, with the change, it sits where it should be, in the middle choice of the 3 ships.

  • I'm not saying the current speeds of ships are balanced correctly, not at all.

In fact I think it's an intentional and sneaky rebalancing strictly for the sake of game health as a move to protect new players from bad experiences. Veteran Gankers traditionally used the Brig, and new players typically mobbed around on the galleon or sloop.

But there is a little bright side to this, and it's Brig hourglass.

The Brig is now bad at running, and chasing, but it's better at fighting. It's a smoother experience because it turns a little tighter now and it doesn't race passed your opponent as much after you anchor them or drop their masts. I hope this perspective of things helps you cope with the loss of speed until the next rebalancing.
