TDM/friendly fire mode.

  • With Arena now far behind us my friend and I want to TDM 1v1 each other on Sea Of Thieves. The only way we've been able to successfully do this, thus far is finding another boat who is getting off, inviting one of us to their boat and finding a nice place to TDM. I say Sea Of Thieves should have a "TDM" or "friendly fire" mode when activated, said player can only be damaged by fellow crewmates who also have "friendly fire" enabled.

  • @blueunixn Nope

  • @strangeness I think you misunderstand. The idea of a TDM mode or a friendly fire option is completely consensual by both or several parties. Those with Friendly Fire disabled, for example, cannot be harmed by friendly fire.

  • @blueunixn I understood, and still do. And it is still a bad idea for this game.... Or perhaps more accurately for the current state of this game.

Here is my reasoning: once you give someone a tool like that, you can't control how they use it. Arene quickly devolved into servers with teams TDMing instead of participating in the match, and area's design was such that it really NEEDED the tension of all five ships participating in the match to work.

I've been in the forums a long time and I seen this idea come up every so often. And without any sense of irony, I see participants in such threads who are for TDM mode and against alliance servers.

I am not an alliance server advocate but I have seen firsthand that the effort it takes to take them over and the miniscule population that plays them doesn't hurt the game at large.

So if someone wanted to start a "TDM alliance server" that all members fought on an island, the tools are already there for them to do so.

But if you turn on friendly fire, the dynamic fundamentally changes. Some ships would use it to goof around and practice while sailing. But for ever y one of those, three would start a galleon, sail to an island, and TDM for 8 hours.

The current state of the game is such that we get five ships per server and those have to be a mix of ship sizes just to keep performance at a reasonable place. Imagine having a galleom taking a server slot and four player slots. Even if they all "opted in" and are okay with it, the other four ships suffer from a server that "feels" more empty and skews the PvEvP balance of the game. Just like we saw in arena and contributed to its death.

The downsides outweigh the upsides in this situation. The number of times that friendly fire will make the game more healthy will be far outweighed by the number of ships that will TDM off in corner and negatively impact the game balance.

So, I say again, it isn't a good fit for this game.

  • @strangeness I suppose you're right and I understand your perspective better
