What Settings Determine Render Distance?

  • The question is in the topic. I play with all my settings down to their lowest to save work on my graphics card. Since making this change, I find I'm often unable to see loot items, even when they are within harpoon range. I could tinker around and see what changes might make a difference, but I'd rather not work on that while my crew is trying to gather loot. Does anyone have an idea as to what I could turn up to make sure everything (or, at least everything within harpoon range) renders? Islands usually pop in at a close distance for me as well, but I'm only concerned about things with which I can interact.

  • This is a good question.

  • If I can remember correctly it's model detail.

  • From my testing Model Detail seems to be the main render distance setting. I recommend setting it to Rare or higher for best results

Thanks! I've got model detail cranked up to max now, so I'll see how that goes and update this thread in a while with the results.

  • Updating: Without any specific quantitative data, it does look like increasing model detail helped. There does seem to be at least one other setting involved, however, since I was unable to see all items in harpoon range after clearing a fort a few nights ago. It was the last item left, so it wasn't a case of there being too many items to have all render at once.

  • @conceitedox8550 As far as I know, render distance is affected by Model Detail and Texture Detail. Maximum render distance is achieved when both of these settings are set to Rare (anything higher does not affect render distance).

So if you are looking to play on the lowest settings without compromising render distance, try this configuration:
    Graphics Settings
