Microsoft Store and Steam Sea of Thieves...

  • Hey lads.

I didn't know Steam had created an instance of the store on their end, so I went ahead and bought a pack of ancient coins from the Microsoft Store.

Accounts linked, purchase completed, bank charged, logged into the game a few times already, and the coins are nowhere to be seen.

At no point was I warned MS Store purchases would be incompatible with the Steam version of the game, so I'm very well expecting the coins to show up in my game.

Anyone with similar experiences? Or is there just some delay in this kind of purchases? It tends to be instantaneous in other games.

Its not immediate sometimes. Sometimes it takes upto an hour or 2 for it to show up. You also might have to relog into the game completely.

  • The microsoft (xbox) account will get the coins that made the purchase. If that is the same account you linked in steam, they are on their way!

  • Thank you for your comments.

It's been over four hours, however, and still no sign of the coins. With any luck, they'll be there tomorrow.

I just hope I haven't run into some kind of bug: Xbox Support couldn't help, and I haven't found an online chat thing specifically for Sea of Thieves.

  • Are y got the Coins? @Jakger86

  • Just an added note, but it seems coin loading may be tied to the game client. I have both versions of the game, but I've moved primary game play to the steam version.

I bought ancient coins on the Microsoft store, loaded up the steam version and played for a few hours. No coins loaded yet, I restarted the client and they were still not there.

I started the Microsoft store version, and the coins immediately appeared. Shut down and opened steam version and the coins were also showing there.

It could be coincidental that the coins got loaded into my account at the same time I started the Microsoft store version of the game, which was 2-3 hours after purchase but that seems a bit too convenient.

This would also mean that buying coins on one store that you don't have the game on will never load those coins into your Microsoft account, since the coins get credited when that store's client starts.

  • Ouch, for future purchases also member that Ancient coins are cheaper on Steam than they are the Microsoft store. Unless you have Gamepass then they are cheaper.

It's not a coincidence. The Steam version can not see if you made a purchase in the MS Store, and the MS Store client can't see if you made a purchase through Steam. Also, buying ancient coins doesn't really add those coins to your account automatically, it adds to them when you launch the game. That's why, if you buy them from the MS store, you won't get them on Steam and vice-versa.

So, buy them in your corresponding platform!

  • @eggamer13 That's just dumb.
They need to fix that asap.

I changed to Steam when i got my free version of it because i did the insider test on it and removed the MS version of it.
Thank god i read this thread....or else i would make the same mistake others did.

I think that is region dependent. The coins on Steam cost more than Microsoft Store counterparts for me - I can also use Microsoft Rewards which can't be used on the Steam version.

It would be nice if the coins just redeemed automatically to your MS account from either store, since they end up there anyways.

I think that's just straight technical limitation. In a very simplified way, and maybe not very true to what really happens: Basically the game, when it opens, does an API request to its store to check if you've bought any coins. With that, I don't think the MS Store version can do an API request to the Steam API and vice-versa.

I repeat that I might be wrong, but for what I've seen, that's what happens.

  • @eggamer13

Loading it up on the Xbox App worked for me too. They should fix this as you have to buy the game twice just to use your legally purchased items. Thanks for this post.

  • @jakger86 Unfortunately, it seems that Microsoft Store purchases are indeed incompatible with Steam purchases
