Mermaids Only Rescue Pirates At Sea

  • The mermaids are there to rescue stranded pirates.
Therefore whenever you are on land they should see that you are “safe” and move along.

Now as soon as you touch water and your ship isnt there then sure they should come back.

As it stands people can just look for mermaids and then they know somebody is on the island. Its a bit of a crutch and goes against stealth.

Now mermaids remain the same if you are in the water.
But if you are on dry land, why would they remain?
There should be a school of mermaids at the outposts waiting to rescue all the npcs surely right?

I get some people love mermaids because they prefer to circle an island before they dock to check for mermaids.
However you could always just send a scout on the outpost, maybe have a lookout. Perhaps keep someone on the ship ready to set sail straight away whilst the rest unload.

I understand its a little more ‘hardcore’ but lets be honest...unless we’re talking about a relationship the word ‘casual’ isnt fun and mermaids hinting to our location is a very ‘casual’ game mechanic.

Im fine with that too, but at sea.
Let us particularly those solo get our sneaky sneak on.

Now i know this is a hot topic that have two camps, for and against.
I dont wish to start an argument but im just depositing my idea and my two cents on the matter.

Disagreeing is fine but my opinion likely wont change on this.
But i mean im not a rare employee so my opinion doesnt matter much anyways 😂

  • @daringclarky

Well, personally I would not mind either way Yet from a less hardcore player perspective and the friendliness of the seas to those that are new or already have issues with campers... I do not support this.

    Why?

The send a scout tactic, sounds grand but I have trolled people by chatting to them while they were trying to find me on the outpost while I was just chilling there after a session and they noticed the mermaid from my ship that sunk after my crew blew it up (yeah we have a guy that burns the ship at the end if nobody is continuing).

I saw them coming so went to play hide and seek... and mess with them a bit. Especially after I noticed they were hot mic crew. I know not very nice, but ooh so funny. Was sitting in a not tuck outfit in the OOS tent behind some of the ornaments.

Hiding on islands is easy, there is to much ground to cover and to kany spots to hide. Try playing hide and seek with your crew after disabling crew names.

In reality this is not a truly viable tactic if people are trying to ambush.

It might just be to easy to abandon your ship and ambush people, while I do not mind it happening. I also do not want to make it to effective and easy to abandon your ship. People that want to avoid mermaids from spawning can do so with rowboats or manage their positions in the water.

We are pirates our home is our ship. Mermaids bring people home, the villagers are at home and don't need a mermaid.

  • I agree with @CotU42 here in virtually every respect.

  • @cotu42 You have made a compelling argument there. Although i still would prefer no mermaids i totally understand the valid point you made 😊

  • "Come spend some time with us. We'd love to have you join us..."

  • @daringclarky mermaids are there to rescue lost sailors, not sailors at sea. So it is perfectly reasonable for them to hang about when a sailor is separated from their ship, even of they are on land.

As for your real point about it being too casual, the game is casual. I have nothing against you hiding away and trying to ambush pirates for their loot. O think its boring and if you were a real swashbuckler you would have at me ship to ship and cutlass to cutlass, but if that's how you enjoy playing have at it. But it's up to you to overcome the tell of the mermaid being spotted. Instead of asking for a possible giveaway to be removed to make your life easier, show us how hardcore you are by winning anyway.

  • @daringclarky I do kind of agree with you but yeah, I think it's more "your ship is safe/home, not the islands" Mermaids can't tell the difference since we can't communicate. It'd be different if they were a fast-travel mechanic haha

If, not saying that they would, release a hardcore version perhaps footprints could be an indication of nearby players.

  • So how about people who are using a tuck animation (any of the sleep, hide and even sit animations) suddenly become subject to OHK from any weapon. One single pellet from a Blunderbuss spray can kill if you're tucked. Seems fair since you want to be sneaky and take away the warning too?

    Keep mermaids as they are.

  • They broke mermaids in the last change. There are regularly 2-3 mermaids when I'm on an island. The rowboat exploit doesn't work anymore either
