Ashen Chest Count (Humourous Commiseration)

10 chests in a row all with Tome IV, been grinding for Vol I & II and I just cant get them. Its very frustrating, voyages are lengthy as you need to do a key and chest voyage so me and my girl can grind on our sloop for hours get a handful of chests and it seems all of them have Vol IV

that is odd. are you buying the quests to find the chests or you just finding them?
the chests are supposed to provide a relatively different one each time.
They are not region specific.
on the insider build I had opened 5 chests and got a different one each time (5 for 5) and I have little reason to believe that it would of been nerfed as it was not on the patch notes. there is a hotfix going around perhaps the issue has been addressed?

@gundy-the-shark negative. all tomes are not region specific nor are they outpost specific. I had opened all mine on plunder and got 1 to 5.

No chests yet. Am I missing something? I think I can get them from one of the newest merc voyages, as random wash ups or sinking a skellie boat. I've done none of the 3 thanks to the hotfix lol...
So 0 chests and about 10 keys so far lol.

Ouch, I got all 5 in just 6 chests. The only double was Volume 3. Guess I was uncharacteristically lucky for a change. RNGesus usually hates me.

Yeah, it's just RNG. No regional aspects to worry about. Sometimes the coin just comes up as "heads" ten thousand times in a row... LOL. Ask Rosencrantz and Guildenstern!

I got most of my chests from the Ashen Skelly Fleets. Although, once we realized the bad luck we were having, we did purchase a few Ashen Chest Stash Voyages to quickly open some up (after acquiring a few keys through an ashen key voyage).

One of my favourite moments was rowing up to a parked galleon that happened to have 2 keys on it while my ship had 2 chests waiting for keys. :D I rowed away with those keys, back to my ship, without them giving chase. (sorry to those pirates!!)

I got I as my first one keep trying.. unfortantly the first 3 I handed in didn't give me coms just dubs

Nah it was outside the chest when I sold.. after the hotfix it has worked everytime Ive handed them in .. didn't know I could sell the chest empty until today

Took me about 12 chests to get all five, thankfully I found a few Ashen Guardians and Key Masters on the way. One good tip I've got is to carry a powder keg with you to detonate when any Key Masters or Ashen Guardians spawn, that way you can ensure you kill them before they kill you.

I had the same problem. After 25 chests sold I got my last tome. Not counting how many I lost dying and spawning skeletons. After I sold the last one I saw you can just buy key and chest locations instead of doing the whole legendary voyages haha.

Where can I get the chests? My girl and I have been getting the 0 doublons cost quests to kill the Key guardian, buts we just obtain keys... We always take their notes that lead us to another islands to dig but... most of the time we get keys again. We just found 1 chest for the moment... Is there anything else to obtain them with more probability? Are we doing something wrong?

The easiest way to do it is to just buy the location for an Ashen Chest on an Outpost and you can dig it up right there where you buy the map at from Stitcher Jim. I did the same as you and bought the Ashen Key quests from him for 0 Doubloons, and went and got several keys. On top of finding them through the missions I bought, I'd often come across Key Guardians and would kill them for another key. Occasionally, I'd come across an Ashen Guardian as well that would drop a map to an Ashen Chest, so I would also get a chest that way. But once I had 4-6 keys on me, I'd go to an Outpost.

At the Outposts, talk to Stitcher Jim and in his 3rd (Doubloon) tab, you'll see "Ashen Chest Stash Voyage" for 30 Doubloons. This is a map for an Ashen Chest that you can dig up right on the same Outpost that you're standing on. Or, in his 4th (Gold) tab, you can buy the same map for 35,000 Gold. So whichever is easier for you to spend (Gold or Doubloons), you can choose your payment method. I would suggest going with Doubloons because each chest will really only cost you 10 Doubloons, because when you sell whichever Tome is inside of it to Stitcher Jim, you get 10 Doubloons back. And then you can sell the empty Ashen Chest to Stitcher Jim as well, for another 10 Doubloons back. So the cost is really 10 Doubloons since you can get 20 of them back.

Depending on your Doubloon inventory, this is well worth it. For me, I've already bought all cosmetics in his shop and still had around 950 Doubloons, so it was nothing to purchase a few Ashen Chest maps for (essentially) 10 Doubloons each. And to be honest, as you're doing all of the Tome commendations and all of the various commendations tied to the Ashen Treasures while you're doing all of this, you'll be rewarded more Doubloons just for unlocking commendations too. So I think that at the end of buying close to 10 Ashen Chest maps from Stitcher Jim, I had earned so many Doubloons back through commendations anyway, that I either broke even at the end or even ended up with a little more Doubloons than I started the whole thing with lol. So it works out well. Hope this helped! 😊🌊👍

It took me 14 Ashen Chests until I unlocked all 5 Tomes lol. Tome V kept eluding me until Chest #14 was opened, although I must have gotten seven Tome III's as that was definitely the most common one that kept appearing for me. 😅 It was fun going for the Ashen Keys and having every Chest be a "surprise" when you opened it though, so I'm enjoying this addition to the game. Even though I've gotten all of the Tomes now, if I'm sailing around and see the bright red aura of an Ashen Guardian or Key Master on a random island, I'll definitely be stopping and doing more of these just for fun! 👏😊👍🔥📕

@pithyrumble Not sure if anyone answered you yet. So far, for me anyways, I have found the ashen guardians on random islands. I just check every island now. And you have a random chance at nothing, a Ashen Key Master, or an Ashen Guardian. From a distance I am not sure you can discern between the Ashen Key or Ashen Guardian. Only when you get close enough to see them do you know what you have found.

There are a few ways to find the chests.
The Ashen Skeleton Ship Fleets (giant fiery ship cloud in the sky) will drop three Ashen Chests if you beat all three waves and recover the final captain ship's loot! (I got many/most of mine from that)
You can run into random Ashen Guardian skeletons on islands, and they will drop a map where an Ashen Chest is buried.
The most reliable and easy way to get an Ashen Chest is to purchase an Ashen Chest Stash voyage (from Stitcher Jim in any Outpost Tavern) for either 35k gold or 30 doubloons (I recommend spending the doubloons, as you'll make most, if not all, of them back from the chest). That voyage will give you a map for that outpost. Dig up the chest and open it with an Ashen Key.
I think you can find some others, randomly, plus you can get the free Legendary Ashen Chest Voyage if you are a Pirate Legend.

The Ship Fleets and the Ashen Chest Stash Voyages are the best, most reliable ways (depending on how savvy you are at sinking multiple skeleton galleons.

I've snagged all 5 tomes, less than 10 opened, but maybe only 6 or 7 opened to find all 5 tomes. 😅

Yeah, lol, since the time I got my own finished, I've helped other people get their 5 different tomes within 6-8 chests. :D
I blame my mate. Must have been his bad luck. First one I opened without him, got me the one I needed! :D

Hehe, thanks! It's all good. Fortunately, my mates and I had decided to play a super long session on the day of the update, so, those first 22 chests were all in that one session. We unlocked everything else. Then, the very next day, I hopped on duo sloop with my lovely partner, she opened up her first ashen chest - and it was the volume I needed. :D
Still - yeah - 23 total chests before it popped up, haha. Those are some odds!
