Sorry, sloops are not faster sailing into the wind.

  • At best are the same speed as every other ship.

Every time I sail directly in to the wind away from a brigantine or galleon the distance between us does not increase. At best it just keeps them at bay for a while.

If anything shouldn't a sloop should be faster with a tailwind as it can utilise 100% of its sail? Whereas the brigantine and galleon only the rear most sail is being fully utilised. Wind to the front sail(s) is being blocked by the rear.

  • @stroro Sloops aren't designed to be faster at top speed than galleons or brigs. By nature, the more masts>more sails> more speed philosophy of sailing holds true here when in open water. In Shipwreck Bay and areas where manueverability trumps velocity, a Sloop should never get caught. Sailing headwind, tailwind, or otherwise against Brigs and Gallies in open water is not a winning strategy in most cases. Hope this was helpful.

  • @membrainz420 I know this game isn't supposed to be historically accurate but the nerd in me would be remiss to point out that a galleon back in the hay day of sail would reach about 5 knots whereas a sloop would reach about 20 knots.

So the game does have it significantly backwards. So if a galleon was ever caught in a headwind, they were pretty much just stuck there unless they cranked out oars. They would definitely not be able to out chase a sloop, with or without a tailwind.

The majority of pirates used sloops too.

  • Sloops are faster AGAINST the wind not with, allthough i have been caught up by brigs sometimes against the wind but also ran away from them.
Galleons cant keep up against the wind to a sloop thought.

  • The trick is, you have to square your sails. Center them, and go. No ship will catch you.

  • @erinom3 Exactly, but sometimes a brig has came close anyway but sometimes they haven't so it's a lottery in my experiance anyway.
Last brig couldn't keep up ;P

In what position your sails if you going into wind ?

And there is @Erinom3 already gave u answer

  • @stroro When in this situation, put your sails full forward, you will notice a difference

  • It would be cool if there were reefs that would block the way for Galleons or risk taking a lot of damage and slow down significantly, whereas sloop and brigs would be able to sail over them, unless the brigs hull is more so in the water? I don't know, just spit balling here

  • @r3d50v13t There is 😏🤫

This is in game allready. U just need to know where.
There is a unmarked island near the middle of the map. This island has a quite big range around it which is "reef".

  • Ah, I probably don't not notice and have been sailing over em without realizing it

    Ignore me then

This explains why my sloop was out-sailed by a Brigantine that chased me the other day! More sails = more speed makes a lot of sense here, and so the Sloop's core asset as agile is pretty clear.

  • @kaelon necro

Edit: Wait, I'm part of the problem!

  • @stroro I play solo a lot...and a brigantine or galleon NEVER catched me...look at this:
