@stroro Sloops aren't designed to be faster at top speed than galleons or brigs. By nature, the more masts>more sails> more speed philosophy of sailing holds true here when in open water. In Shipwreck Bay and areas where manueverability trumps velocity, a Sloop should never get caught. Sailing headwind, tailwind, or otherwise against Brigs and Gallies in open water is not a winning strategy in most cases. Hope this was helpful.

This explains why my sloop was out-sailed by a Brigantine that chased me the other day! More sails = more speed makes a lot of sense here, and so the Sloop's core asset as agile is pretty clear.

It would be cool if there were reefs that would block the way for Galleons or risk taking a lot of damage and slow down significantly, whereas sloop and brigs would be able to sail over them, unless the brigs hull is more so in the water? I don't know, just spit balling here

This is in game allready. U just need to know where.
There is a unmarked island near the middle of the map. This island has a quite big range around it which is "reef".

So the game does have it significantly backwards. So if a galleon was ever caught in a headwind, they were pretty much just stuck there unless they cranked out oars. They would definitely not be able to out chase a sloop, with or without a tailwind.

The majority of pirates used sloops too.
