I was NOT notified that you changed the game I purchased

  • They send an email almost every week informing everyone of updates and what is going on.

  • They post patch notes for all there updates, I just get on there Twitter page Everytime there's an update. They list every change they made.

  • So OP can be bothered to come to the forums to act all entitled and make a pointless thread but cant be bothered to read the patch notes which would have been quicker.... makes sense.

  • @little-squash What decade are you playing video games in? I don't think I can't remember the last time I've received in-game patch notes.

  • This is the first, non-early access game I have ever entered a forum for, but usually, at least the application that does the updating will provide you with release notes and the option to review more fully. Steam, origin or Uplay the fact that you have updated is advised and usually a link to patch notes is provided.
I certainly see why this would make sense. There are likely people out there who have no interest in looking at a forum and no interest/ability to review Twitter and other social media for information that effects their gameplay and could with very little difficulty be provided via a notification in game like the one about accessing support. Maybe add it there.
This is just good customer service with minimal effort.

  • @little-squash I have no idea why you are getting so much hate for this. Maybe it was the way you phrased it?

Anyway, I think its a very reasonable suggestion; it would be silly to think that every player would come to the forum/twitter looking for patch notes. There should be away to see the updates in-game (at the very least the highlights of the update). The majority of the games I play do this in some shape or form and I see no reason why this game shouldn't either.

  • I was just thinking the same thing. I think maybe your approach to this was the reason for the replies you have received.
I think it may be partly to do with Rares console pedigree. A lot of PC gamers take interest in the development of the games we play and have an expectation that this information is given to us because that is what we have had.
I think a lot of console players are used to having to search for patch notes and will do so if they care to.
These are huge generalisations and obviously not entirely accurate to all members of either side of the crossplay divide.

  • I really dont want patch notes in-game.
I just like the tips and how it's worded in English.
I don't care to use social media, so I prefer to get all my SoT info here, where they can be discussed.
Rare has bent over backwards to be transparent, but I've never expected them to email me patch notes.

  • @little-squash agreed, some ingame news feed in the main menu or session window would be nice. On the other hand it could disturb the immersion to see some real world wordings in game.

  • @siraxilotl said in I was NOT notified that you changed the game I purchased:

As many have already pointed out, Rare has posted patch notes all over.

I'm part of a rather big open source project and I do get what you mean.
    But:
This website is a UX nightmare.
I kind of (but am not convinced by it) get that patch notes are sorted into the "Support" section.
I would NEVER looked for them underneath "Status". Patchnotes are NOT a status.
Still... ok, maybe they don't use a CMS and adding a navigation item is a big deal... fine with me.
So finally I find the patchnotes. But only the latest ones.
I need to search through the forum now (granted: the navigational path was short enough).

If you'd now argue that I should try building websites first, that's a fair argument.
That's my job for the last 22 years, so I'd argue that I do have some experience doing it.
Still, that would be an argument from authority - which makes it a s****y argument.
So if someone from RARE reads these posts, hit me up and I will fly over to the UK and help you fix the website - for free, since I enjoy the game so much.

Resources you have to learn about patch updates:

    • Google
    • Twitter
    • This forum

Missing in your list: This website.

  • @little-squash Oh give me a break hahaha. You cant be serious? That is just laziness that you expect the Dev team to provide that for you.

Do what most people do. Follow them on Social media or go on the forums. If you so interested in what they are patching then go look it up and read it. Dont expect it to be personally notified to you.

There is no launcher for this game like other big MMO's and quite frankly it is not needed.

  • The user-friendly design would be to post patch notes on the Windows store launch page or xbox app (pc). No idea where they would post these on a console dashboard.

However, it does seem like OP might not understand this is an always-online experience, and the developer is constantly tweaking server parameters that impact gameplay even without a client update. You do not have the option of playing this game without the latest patch. Period. Furthermore your copy of the game is just a license to play the service - you do not actually own or control the code and assets that comprise Sea of Thieves.

  • The WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA is stronk with this person.

Microsoft is in NO way obligated to tell you about changes to THEIR software. Devs usually do though to prevent confusion or inform players about new features.

What? No. This forum uses one of the more advanced tech I've seen so far. And the rest of the website is pretty sleak and user friendly as well.

I'd say the UX is spot on

And besides, the patch notes are well visible under Announcments - "The Captains Cabin" / Release Notes Discussion.

  • @little-squash said in I was NOT notified that you changed the game I purchased:

    @xjosh31
I know they are on this forum. My point is that they should be provided in game. Many people don't know to come to the forum and they shouldn't be required to. If a change is being made to something I purchased, I should be notified. The easiest way to do this is "in game" notification.

I am actually with you on this one. Social media shouldn’t be a requirement to get info. There should definitely be in game notification. It shouldn’t be, we’ll go check this. No they need to inform people and in game is the easiest way to reach everyone. Even if they aren’t playing at the time, once they get on they will see the notification and be informed without having to wonder what’s going on and then search for info.

Totally with you on that 👍

  • @jackthehammock Lol 😂

Yeah, so it's websockets. Wee :)
Good UX uses modern tech, but using modern tech does not equal good UX.
Apart from that the UI of the site reacts very slow on an OK-Device (iPhone 7 and Huawei P10+). Especially the navigation is an issue.

I'd say the UX is spot on

Depends on your point of view.

And besides, the patch notes are well visible under Announcments - "The Captains Cabin" / Release Notes Discussion.

Great example, glad you mention it.
So if I click through the site I go to Forums, Announcements, Release Notes.
Then I see the threads about, say, 1.0.1.
Those are the notes I want to read.
Clicking the link pushes my viewport down to the last post.
If I don't pay close attention to my scrollbar (on mobile I don't have it unless I touch the VP) I don't see patchnotes.
I need to scroll all the way up again.

So to make my point on the UX:
There are multiple locations for the release notes (Mistake #1).
The non-forum location only features the latest release notes (Mistake #2) which makes me not think about going to the forums right away.

But I give you that: Maybe I'm just old (insert self-irony emoticon here)

  • Hi @Little-Squash we post the Release Notes (in their entirety) in two places:

    • Website Page - This is for people who just want the release notes and no discussion. When we share our release notes on social media or in our other community spaces, we link to this page. This allows whoever is interested to see the most up to date set of release notes as cleanly as possible.
    • Forums - Traditionally Release Notes have always been shared on the Forum, this allowed players a chance to discuss the changes that were made in an official community space. It also serves as an archive!

Thank you for your feedback on the other ways we could make this more visible to players!

  • @little-squash It's actually not that common for patch notes to be found in-game. Most games will have a patch note section on their respected launcher but rarely will you see these posted within the game itself. Sorry to say it but you're definitely in the minority if you feel otherwise. I think the UI could use a lot more improvements before seeing patch notes added.

  • @lefaux2 i give you that, the deep links to the latest post in a thread don’t make sense for a click on a thread title, but that and the rest you mention are minor nuisances.

A UX nightmare is something utterly completely different.

Being able to see similar posts while typing the title, not losing a create post form while browsing, good filters, sort, customizable notifications, instant notifications, working notifications center (hello IGN), concise website front.

I really don’t know what you have.

And btw with advanced tech I mean the responsiveness and features above, not the implementation !

  • @khaleesibot
I think it would help to clarify that I'm not suggesting the full release notes to be available in game. Rather I think it would be helpful to have some sort of announcements screen in game that could be incorporated into the title screen or accessible from the title screen. I think it would be helpful to have short announcements about things such as the game being updated. This could include a brief description of some of the more major changes and then direction on where to go to find more details. This would also be a useful way to announce known upcoming game outages. It would also be great to be able to announce upcoming content and events to help build excitement for the entire player base.

  • Is this really a discussion?

  • @little-squash

Reasonable expectation that's been standard for decades in other games.

Patch Notes - 1.1.blah.blah.blah on load up or at the crew screen.

  • @edemardil @little-squash

This all just seems like the ramblings of a person who is hungry for something to whine about. "I was NOT notified" - rolls eyes. I worked retail long enough to read the subtext of that tone. Next we're gonna be like, "well you know, some people might have stopped playing the game and don't know it's fixed now, and maybe they cancelled their internet and threw away their computers, so Rare needs to send them a letter. But actually some might be homeless now too, so Rare needs to microchip them so they can be geolocated and told about the patch notes in person."
