    Combat Balancing Improvements

To learn more about the vision for combat in Sea of Thieves and get further detail on these balancing improvements, check out our recent Developer Update Forum post by Design Director Mike Chapman.

    • Double-Gun Switching – The Pistol, Blunderbuss and Eye of Reach have new wield animations and enforce a delay when equipping and switching between these weapons.
    • Fluid Swordplay – Missing a cutlass swing no longer slows down player movement, ensuring a more fluid swordplay experience.
    • Eye of Reach Hip Fire – Reduced accuracy when hip-firing the Eye of Reach. Under pressure you can still get lucky with a hip-fired Eye of Reach shot, but at mid- to long range this is significantly reduced.
    • Weapon Knockback – Pistol and Eye of Reach shots will no longer apply knockback to enemies hit. Cutlass and Blunderbuss, however, will retain their ability to knock back players. Skeletons wielding a Pistol, Blunderbuss or Eye of Reach have also had their ability to knock back players removed.
    • Weapon Reload Improvements – Following the recent change to the Eye of Reach, now the Pistol and Blunderbuss both reload the moment the hammer is pulled. This allows players to sprint sooner when reloading without restarting the animation.
    • Bullet Projectile Speed – Bullets fired from a Blunderbuss or Eye of Reach now travel faster through the air, providing more predictable accuracy at range.
    • Weapon Damage Falloff – Bullet damage no longer decreases over distance.
    • Eye of Reach Damage – Eye of Reach Damage reduced by a small amount to ensure this weapon's damage is balanced following the improvements to bullet speed and damage falloff.

    Updates

    • Game RepackagingSea of Thieves has now been repackaged to give a smaller install size, leaving your device with some extra room! This means that you'll need to reinstall the game for this update, at the new smaller size.
    • New Player Onboarding – New pirates joining Sea of Thieves will be greeted with a new onboarding flow. This now takes players through a range of new activities before leaving the Outpost – they even get some rewards for their troubles!
    • Show Nameplates Above Other Crews – New Settings option allows players to hide the nameplates of any non-crew members they meet, reducing the opportunity for stream sniping.
    • Keybinding for 'Toggle HUD' – Players can now assign a keybind for the 'Toggle HUD' option to give you fast access to remove the UI for those beautiful screenshots. The FPS, Ping and Player Chat indicators are also correctly hidden when activated.
    • Ocean Crawler Cannons – Layout of the Ocean Crawler Cannons has been adjusted to improve line of sight in combat.
    • Floating Treasure – The speed that treasure floats to the surface after being released in deep water has been significantly increased.
    • What's that Whisper? – You can now hear stationary Bounty Skulls when they're close by.
    • Calming the Kraken – The Kraken has learnt to pick on someone her own size and will now take it easier on Sloops and Brigantines. Tentacle wraps that block access to lower levels have been significantly reduced.
    • A Ghost on the Waves – Rumours of a pale beast in the waves have been circulating heavily, with sightings becoming slightly more frequent as it's grown in infamy.
    • Message in a Bottle Cargo Runs – Cargo Runs can now be found inside a Message in a Bottle.
    • Skeleton Ship Encounter Range – Skelly Ships will wait until you're further away before they consider returning to the depths.
    • Cannonball Impact Audio – Cannonballs hitting rock and wood now sound even better. You'll also be able to hear the difference between a cannonball hitting you above or below deck.
    • Triple Buffering – On Windows 10, a new video option allows players to enable Triple Buffering, which will improve the 'VSync' option's performance.
    • Island Shadows – When set to Legendary or Mythical settings, islands now cast a shadow on the ocean.
    • Company Reputation – Entering each of the Company Commendation screens now plays a sound effect relevant to that Company.
    • Did You Hear That? – Barrels and Rowboats now make a noise when you hit them with your ship.
    • Kitchen Delivery – The Shipwrights have fitted new stoves and roasting pans to Sloops, Brigantines and Galleons. We weren't expecting delivery so soon, who signed for this order?
    • Streamlined Hulls – The Shipwrights have been busy streamlining the hulls on Sloops, Brigantines and Galleons. They all now have strange cutouts near the bow, they've said this is more streamlined – we're yet to be convinced...
    • Fortress Under Construction - We've seen that the skeletons have been constructing a new Fort inside The Devil's Roar. So you can visit Molten Sands Fortress, but due to challenging conditions this Fort is still under construction and isn't active yet...

    Performance and Stability Improvements

    • Reduced loading time for 'Enlisting Pirate' step when skipping the title screen animation.
    • Resolved stuttering on title screen animation.
    • When running a multi-monitor setup with different refresh rates, the main monitor will no longer assume the refresh rate of the lowest monitor.
    • Resolved potential crash when navigating the Bilge Rats Reputation pages.
    • Game chat has been upgraded, resolving several game chat and audio-related crash and stability issues.
We are constantly reviewing the performance and stability of each patch and providing performance optimisations and stability improvements.

    Fixed Issues

    • After being drowned by a Kraken, players returning from the Ferry of the Damned should no longer have their camera locked in position.
    • Recent Players list now correctly updates when you see another player in the world.
    • Treasure on board a Rowboat that is subsequently destroyed while on land can still be collected by players.
    • Players affected by snake venom can now correctly interact with barrels.
    • Removed chest hiding spot on outer left-hand side of the Galleon's hull.
    • Players can now light the lantern in the Galleon's brig.
    • Rowboats can now be rowed slowly in Kraken ink.
    • Pigs can now be fed correctly after migrating with the Ship.
    • Snakes inside baskets should now correctly agitate and attack players after migrating with your ship.
    • Snakes now correctly take damage from being shot in the head.

    Sound and Visuals

    • Resolved rendering issues on NVidia GPUs when High Model Quality is selected.
    • Voice chat no longer queues up during the load screen and playback on first entry into the game.
    • Resolved issue with hair clipping through the Ghost Jacket.
    • Adjusted Skelly Fort wave horn volume.
    • When a storm covers an island, bells inside buildings no longer sound like they are affected by storm conditions.
    • Rum Bottle Crates now play appropriate smash SFX.
    • Snakes placed in a basket no longer clip through the bottom of the basket.

    UI

    • All NPCs now use the same consistent interaction button.
    • Using resource crates should no longer cause other game tooltips to show the incorrect button prompt.
    • After handing in a chest, bringing up the pirate chat radial will provide the correct phrase options.
    • Fixed inconsistent layouts in map radial icons.
    • Resolved issue navigating a two-page barrel inventory with a mouse.
    • Pirate chat messages should no longer appear in the incorrect order in the chat window.
    • Slider settings can no longer be set to an unsupported value.
    • French text has been corrected for Shrouded Spoils Commendations.
    • Russian captain names are now in Russian.
    • Resolved issue where the red damage vignette would persist on-screen after a player dies.

    Environment

    • There are no longer floating rocks by Devil's Ridge.
    • Prevented players from getting underneath Lone Cove Island.
    • Removed the chance for players to get stuck inside Gold Hoarder's flagpole at Outposts.
    • Removed the chance for players to get stuck in the branches of the withered tree on Morrow's Peak Outpost.
    • Reduced chance for items dropped into moving bushes to be seen floating in the air.
    • Eruption VFX and/or superheated water effects no longer appear intermittently after server migrations.
    • Removed hole in textures on Snake Island.
    • Torches should no longer have missing VFX.

    Known Issues

    • Barrel Interaction - Players are unable to interact with barrels while drowning.
    • Chest Of Sorrow - Placing a Chest of Sorrow on a Rowboat that is docked to your ship, then undocking the Rowboat, will still cause the ship to fill with water.
We are working on fixes for both of these issues for a future update.

    COMBAT BALANCING IMPROVEMENTS

    • Wielding Weapons – The forced firing delay has been removed when wielding a gun after sprinting or undocking, allowing players to fire sooner. The forced firing delay when switching weapons still remains to prevent fast switching and firing between guns.
    • Sword Switching – Players are now able to switch weapons/items at any point during a light sword attack. Players are still prevented from switching during a heavy sword attack.

    UPDATES

    • Molten Sands Fortress – Molten Sands Fortress is now active! Face off against skeleton waves while dodging volcanic rocks and luring them onto geysers before raiding the vault for Ashen Rewards!
    • Mercenary Cosmetics Bundle – The previously exclusive Mercenary cosmetic bundle is now available for purchase at Outposts across the world. Head to The Wilds, The Ancient Isles, The Shores of Plenty or The Devil's Roar to purchase the Mercenary clothing, equipment, Pistol and Cutlass from their respective Outpost stores.
    • Xbox Mouse and Keyboard Support – Players on Xbox can now take full advantage of mouse and keyboard support on their favourite console!

    PERFORMANCE IMPROVEMENTS

    • Voice chat should now be much more reliable when many players are speaking at the same time.
    • Resolved a number of game stability issues.

We are constantly reviewing the performance and stability of each patch and providing performance optimisations and stability improvements.

    FIXED ISSUES

    Gameplay

    • Resolved an issue preventing players from switching to an item/weapon after hitting an object with a sword swing.
    • Players can emote while vomiting, and no longer see a stream of vomit coming from their head.
    • Sound and Visual

    KNOWN ISSUES

    • Extended Black Screen on Loading - There is a chance that players may be held indefinitely on the black loading screen (with spinner) when returning from the Ferry.

We are continuing to investigate this issue, but we have also identified a potential workaround if you are affected by this and in a crew. If you find yourself indefinitely stuck on the black loading screen, have your crew select your gamertag from the My Crew menu and 'Vote to Lock in the Brig'. After arriving in the brig you can then be released to bypass the black screen issue.

    • Item Quick Switch (PC Only) – After undocking from a ship based interactive item you will be unable to tap the quest radial or item radial to return to the previously wielded item.
    • Mercenary Voyage Cargo Run – The Mercenary Voyage of the Shores of Plenty Cargo Run provides players with Devil’s Roar Cargo to deliver. The Voyage still directs players on a journey through the Shores of Plenty however the cargo is more vulnerable (and more rewarding) than intended.

[Team up and sail the seas.]

Looking for new crewmates? We've got a bunch of places you can visit to seek out like-minded pirates, so sail on over to these official Sea of Thieves hangouts:

  • Release Notes - 1.4.0

    Ahoy pirates!

This update introduces Shrouded Spoils, the latest free update for Sea of Thieves. As a treacherous fog engulfs the waters, pirates can discover a variety of new features and improvements. Fresh hazards threaten unwary ships, but there are more riches to earn and more ways to build your legend.

    Shrouded Spoils

This content update also introduces and showcases a whole host of new features that will persist in Sea of Thieves beyond the time-limited event:

Galleon customised with the time-limited Wailing Barnacle set.

    • Expanded Ship Customisation - Pirates can now flaunt their riches by customising their ship's wheel, cannons and capstan! These new cosmetics can be bought from Shipwrights across the Sea of Thieves and their stock is split by region (matching locations to our existing sets). So if you want to round out a cosmetic set, visit the Shipwright you bought it from the first time around!

Galleon and Sloop sailing through fog.

    • Fog - Additional care needs to be taken when sailing the seas, as fog has now been reported across the Sea of Thieves!

Pirate aiming cannon at new Megalodon variety.

    • Megalodon Variety - More of these toothy fiends (each with their own distinctive look) have reached the surface. Shrouded Spoils introduces the Crested Queen, Shadowmaw, Ancient Terror and the extremely rare Shrouded Ghost!
    • Kraken Updates - The difficulty of Kraken encounters has been increased and balanced for different crew sizes, meaning it can now assault any ship, even your Sloop! Watch out for its new slap attack too. The seas just got more perilous...
    • Kraken and Megalodon Rewards - Loot can now be found bobbing on the surface after defeating a Megalodon or Kraken.
    • Activated Skeleton Forts - Six additional Skeleton Forts have now been occupied by the undead.
    • Fort Commodities - Loot in Forts can now include the extra-powerful Stronghold Gunpowder Keg. Ancient Bone Dust crates can also be found and exchanged for Gold and reputation with the Merchant Alliance.
    • Skeleton Ships - Players can now encounter passive and aggressive emergent Skeleton Ships anywhere in the world! Passive ships just want to go about their business but they will fight back if you attack them. Best of luck if one of the more aggressive ones surfaces near you...
    • Mermaid Statues - These have reappeared on the sea bed of the Sea of Thieves! They also now drop Gems when defeated which can be cashed in with any Trading Company for Gold and reputation.
    • Raise your Tankard - You can now raise your grog to fellow pirates to celebrate a lucrative adventure or commiserate a crewmate sent to the Ferry of the Damned.
    • Time-Limited Items - Spend your hard-earned Doubloons on the Wailing Barnacle sails, hull, figurehead, flag, cannons, wheel and capstan. These won't be available forever, so buy them while you can!
    • Commendations - Shrouded Spoils introduces 17 additional commendations for pirates to achieve.
    • Commendation Grouping - Commendations in the quick menu are now grouped by campaign/Bilge Rat Adventure to make them easier to navigate.

If you find you now meet the requirements, just cash in one more item to trigger your achievement!
    • Devil's Roar Rebalancing - Based on player feedback and data analysis, The Devil's Roar has cooled off a little. Volcanoes will now erupt less frequently and volcanic rocks will hit players and their ships less frequently.

  • Patch Notes - 1.3.2

    Ahoy pirates!

Welcome to the first Festival of the Damned, celebrating the spookiest time of the year on the Sea of Thieves! This new update marks the end of Forsaken Shores and the Forsaken Shores time-limited cosmetics found in Duke's shop. Instead you can find some spooky Festival of the Damned time-limited cosmetics in stock, which will be available for the duration of this Bilge Rat Adventure.

    alt text

Patch 1.3.2 also brings with it improvements to the mechanics of the Eye of Reach, rowboats and rewards gained from The Devil's Roar. There are also key performance improvements and fixes for known issues.

Bilge Rats Adventure - Festival of the Damned

The Bilge Rats invite you to honour the Ferryman, whose creepy craft allows pirates to live forever – despite the number of times they meet a sticky and often hilarious end.

    alt text

    • Flames of Fate – On the Ferry of the Damned, the Well of Fates has been revealed. It produces a different coloured light depending on the way your pirate has perished. Use your lantern to capture the flame so you can take it back to the land of the living.
    • Bilge Rat Doubloons – Each Festival of the Damned Commendation on the progress screen details the number of Bilge Rat Doubloons it rewards. Players can earn up to 110 Bilge Rat Doubloons.

    alt text

    • Bilge Rat Cosmetics – Visit Duke's Shop to purchase the time-limited lantern, sails and three Festival of the Damned Face Paint looks.
    • Bilge Rat Titles – Earn yourself the Title ‘Legend of the Damned’, by completing the Festival of the Damned Commendations. This title will unlock straight into your Vanity Chest, ready to be equipped.
    • Legendary Commendation – Earn an additional 50 Doubloons by taking on the challenge of the Legendary Commendation.

    Updates

This content update also introduces and showcases a raft of new features that will persist in Sea of Thieves beyond the time-limited campaign:

    alt text

    • Devil's Roar Map - Explore the newly emerged lands to the east, where both sea and land provide new hazards for unwary pirates!
    • Volcanoes - Exploding in a fiery inferno, volcanoes rain down hot rocks that damage players and ships. It has never been more important to think carefully about where you anchor!
    • Earthquakes - Tremors forcefully shake the ground and players in the vicinity. Sometimes these earthquakes are isolated, but they may also foreshadow a volcanic eruption…
    • Geysers - Geysers are active in The Devil's Roar and can launch you into the air... so watch where you step!

    alt text

    • Lava Floor - Lava floor zones become active during a volcanic eruption and will cause damage over time if you stand on them. Keep moving!
    • Superheated Water - During a volcanic eruption, the waters around the island become superheated. Damage is not applied to ships, but pirates who opt to stand or swim in the superheated water will find themselves in dire need of a banana. Water in your hull can also become superheated, so have your bucket at the ready!
    • Rowboats - Find these new additions washed up on the islands. They can be pushed into the water and docked to your ship to be transported around the sea.
    • Seaposts - These have appeared across the Sea of Thieves, offering discounts on a selection of items that change over time.

    alt text

    • Commendations - Earn 23 standard Commendations during the first two weeks of Forsaken Shores. Additional commendations are coming as part of weeks three and four. All these Commendations are here to stay!
    • Bilge Rat Titles - Earn two unique Titles introduced during the first two weeks of Forsaken Shores. Equip them straight from the Vanity Chest! Will you be a Devil’s Cartographer or Master Devil's Voyager? Additional Titles are coming later in the Forsaken Shores campaign.
    • Bilge Rat Doubloons - There are 185 Bilge Rat Doubloons available for the Commendations during the first two weeks of Forsaken Shores. Additional Doubloons will be available from week three, alongside the additional Commendations. Each of the Forsaken Shores Commendations on the Bilge Rat progress screen shows the number of Bilge Rat Doubloons it awards.

    Cosmetics

    alt text

    • Time-Limited Items - The Forsaken Ashes weapons and ship liveries are available throughout the Forsaken Shores campaign. Visit Duke in any tavern and exchange your Doubloons while they are in stock!
    • Forsaken Ashes Clothing and Items - The Forsaken Ashes clothing and items are now stocked on Morrow's Peak Outpost. Only pirates who have dared to explore The Devil's Roar will be able to purchase these items. These are a permanent addition and can be purchased with gold.
    • Ocean Crawler Set - The Ocean Crawler clothing, items, weapons and ship liveries are now stocked in their respective shops on Morrow's Peak Outpost. These can also be purchased with gold.
    • Kraken Set - The Kraken clothing, items, weapons and ship liveries are now stocked in their respective shops on Morrow's Peak Outpost. Save some of your hard-earned gold for this impressive new set!
    • Huntress Figurehead - Now stocked by the Shipwright on Morrow's Peak Outpost. This figurehead was exclusively awarded to players around San Diego Comic-Con and Gamescom 2018, but is now available to all pirates in exchange for gold!

    Barrel Improvements

After feedback shared with us about the changes made to barrels and inventory management in Patch 1.2.4, we improved the stocking-up speed which will significantly reduce the number of button presses required. We will continue to monitor feedback, and you can read Design Director Mike Chapman’s further insights into what the future holds for these systems.

    • Barrel Take/Store All - Players can now take and store stacks of resources with a single button press.
    • Barrel Auto-Advance - When removing resources from barrels, if all items in a stack are removed, the next stack with remaining resources will automatically be selected.
    • Resource Capacity - When carrying the maximum number of a specific resource in your inventory, this resource will clearly be marked red in any barrels to indicate that you can't carry any more.
    • UI Close Delay - The short animation of UI closing has been disabled, so players resume control of their pirate immediately. This impacts the closing of all full-screen UI, from shops and barrels to settings and crew menus.

    Updates

    • Bilge Rat Shop - The Bilge Rat shop now has tabs so that time-limited items appear on a separate page to the Letters of Recommendation and gold bags.
    • Maps in Barrels - Similar to messages in bottles, maps can now be found within barrels.
    • Map Radial - Voyage maps which have been purchased and voted upon will now appear in front of all the emergent message in a bottle/barrel maps, so the most important maps are always easiest to find.

    Performance Improvements

    • Multiple memory improvements.
    • Multiple server and client crashes have been resolved.
We are constantly reviewing the performance and stability of each patch and providing performance optimisations and stability improvements..

    Fixed Issues

    • Gold Skeletons are now appropriately rusted by buckets of water.
    • Players' levels of reputation with each Trading Company are now correctly displayed on the reputation screen.
    • NPC dialogue will no longer get stuck on-screen when players are attacked by skeletons.
    • Barrel names on the ships are now correctly localised.
    • The animation for reloading the pistol will now appear consistently.
    • It is no longer possible to drop a chest between the deck and the side of the Galleon at the front, making it impossible to pick up.
    • Players holding a Chest of a Thousand Grogs will no longer become permanently drunk, even after dropping the chest.
    • The Lowly Merchant Watch no longer appears closed when you show it to other players.
    • Previewing items in the clothing shops on Outposts in The Shores of Plenty will now correctly display the item you have selected.
    • Items you store in the first slot of a barrel which you previously looted will no longer be invisible.
    • The effects that appear after digging no longer appear to have lines running through them.
    • "Back" and "Discard" tooltips are no longer missing from the voyages inventory.
    • It is no longer possible to clip into the mountain/rocks on Ancient Spire Outpost.
    • Looking up with an item equipped will no longer cause your hand to appear invisible.
    • Light emitted onto the sea from a lantern no longer causes a pixelated effect.

    Known Issues

    • Oars can appear to disconnect from the Rowboat along with the player, only visible in third-person.
    • Mermaid Statues have been temporarily disabled due to performance issues.
Improvements to this are being investigated, and the intention is to re-enable these as soon as possible.
    • Merchant Alliance crates on board a ship that sinks will not float to the surface and cannot be picked up.
We have identified the issue and we are working on a fix.
    • Walking on a Rowboat can appear jittery.

  • Patch Notes - 1.2.5

    Ahoy pirates!

We're in the second and final week of the Cursed Crews Bilge Rat Adventure! It's your last chance to ensure you have the pistol, Eye of Reach, blunderbuss and cutlass from The Wailing Barnacle weapon set. These weapons are only available for this Bilge Rat Adventure, so make sure they're in your inventory before they disappear from the shops! The Commendations, Doubloons, and Titles will still be available after the event ends, but the time-limited cosmetics will no longer be up for grabs.

Patch 1.2.5 includes some updates to the barrel inventory system, key performance improvements, crash fixes and other fixes for known issues.

    Updates

After feedback shared with us about the changes made to Barrels and inventory management in Patch 1.2.4, Design Director Mike Chapman gave further insight into why the changes were made and what the future holds for these systems.

In Patch 1.2.5, we see the first of our quality of life improvements to the barrel system. These improvements to empty barrel identification and resource level increases are the first of many improvements we have planned for future updates.

    • Bilge Rat Doubloons - To reward pirates who keep the skeleton scourge at bay, Doubloons for Cursed Crews Commendations will remain available to earn even after the Cursed Crews Bilge Rat Adventure ends.
Senior Producer Drew provides some more insight into why this change was made in this Forum Post.
    • Empty Barrel Tooltip - Barrels now display a tooltip to indicate they are empty. Players will no longer need to interact with a barrel in order to discover there is nothing inside.
    • Resource Balancing - Barrels are less likely to be found empty in the world, helping to reducing the time taken to restock ships.
    • Quick Menu - The "Equipment" and "Resources" tabs within the Quick Menu have been swapped around as the "Resources" tab is used most commonly and should be the easiest to access.
    • Here, Take This... Too! - Players can now give and share treasure items in the same way they give and take cannonballs and bananas! Gunpowder Kegs and the Chest of a Thousand Grogs will still need to be dropped to be exchanged.

    Fixed Issues

    • Athena's Fortune voyages will now correctly trigger the final chapter.
    • Fixed issue with telescope clipping.
    • Caged pigs can now be fed again!
    • Bounty Skulls which are washed up on islands can now be picked up.
    • The Hunter Jacket and Trousers now display with their correct colours.
    • Solo sailor crews can now access Crew Privacy settings.
    • Items placed at the bow of the Brigantine can now be picked back up.
    • It is no longer possible to be kicked out of the ship's Cannonball Barrel inventory due to the ship's movement on the waves.
    • Players hit by the Emote Cursed Cannonball will no longer experience the hit animation when the effect wears off.
    • It is no longer possible to scroll through the UI on the Ship Selection Menu.
    • Shooting a Blunderbuss underwater will now display the correct VFX.

    Known Issues

    • Merchant Alliance crates on board a ship which sinks will not float to the surface and cannot be picked up.
We have identified the issue and we're working on a fix.
    • Gold Metal Skeletons cannot be affected by buckets of water.

    Cursed Sails

    alt text

This content update introduces and showcases a raft of new features which will persist in Sea of Thieves beyond the time-limited campaign

    • Cursed Sails Campaign - Pirate dominion on the Sea of Thieves is being challenged, by the dead! Skeletons are taking to the waters in grim galleons, united and spurred on by a mysterious captain. Armed with cursed cannonballs that sow chaos and confusion, the dead make war on the living in Cursed Sails! Watch out for banners on the Outposts, calling you out to battle skeleton ships over the course of three weeks. You can also take a break from the action to investigate the source of the skeleton scourge, following a tale of greed and madness starting with a hint from the Bilge Rats. The introduction of Alliances between crews and the new three-pirate Brigantine ship may help to even the odds. Prepare for battle, pirates!
    • New Threat - Skeleton ships have arrived from the depths of the Sea of Thieves with a variety of cursed cannonballs. Blast them from afar or board their vessel if you fancy your chances face-to-face! Beware of the cursed cannonballs, their effects may turn the tide of battle in the blink of an eye.

    alt text

    • Brigantine - Positioned nicely between the bulk of the Galleon and agility of the Sloop, the Brigantine has been perfectly designed for three pirates to sail to victory.
    • Alliances - A new "Offer Alliance" pennant flag has been added to the Flag Box in the crow’s nest, along with options to both "Join Alliance" and "Leave Alliance". Don't have a mic? Use the "LET'S FORM AN ALLIANCE!" option when holding a speaking trumpet to show your intentions! Form alliances with other crews you encounter on the Sea of Thieves to share in both adventure and reward. Just be careful who you trust, we are pirates after all!
    • Eye of Reach Skeletons - The march of war has inspired skeletons to pick up the Eye of Reach, causing them to pose a threat from a longer distance than ever before. Take care across the entire map, these eagle-eyed foes aren't only found in the crow’s nest of skeleton ships.
    • Bone Crusher Ship Liveries - Won all the battles? Part with your Doubloons for the time-limited Bone Crusher Sails, Hull, Figurehead and Flag liveries throughout Cursed Sails!
    • World Region Sails - Conquer the battles in each world region to earn The Ancient Isles Sail, The Shores of Plenty Sail and The Wilds Sail.
    • Bone Crusher Scar and Tattoo - Conquer all three battles to earn the time-limited Bone Crusher Scar and Tattoo set, which will appear in your Vanity Chest.
    • Price drops - The arrival of the skeleton fleets has the shopkeepers panicked, so you’ll find significantly reduced prices across all the Outposts during Cursed Sails!
    • Commendations - Earn 22 standard Commendations and two Legendary Commendations as part of Cursed Sails. The standard Commendations are only available to earn throughout this time-limited campaign – however, the Legendary Commendations are here to stay! Remember, being a three-week campaign means not all Commendations will be achievable within the same week.
    • Bilge Rat Titles - Earn five unique titles introduced with the Cursed Sails Campaign and equip them straight from the Vanity Chest!
    • Bilge Rat Doubloons - There are 200 Bilge Rat Doubloons available for the standard Commendations, and an additional 100 Bilge Rat Doubloons available for completing the Legendary Commendations. Each of the Cursed Sails Commendations on the Bilge Rat progress screen details the number of Bilge Rat Doubloons it rewards. Looking for new crewmates? We've got a bunch of places you can visit to seek out like-minded pirates, so sail on over to these official Sea of Thieves hangouts:

  • Patch Notes - 1.1.7

    Ahoy pirates!

We're in the final week of the latest Bilge Rat Adventure – The Sunken Curse! It's your last chance to get all the Doubloons available if you want to ensure you have all the time-limited cosmetics in your inventory before they disappear from the shops. The Commendations and Titles will still be available after the event ends, but the time-limited cosmetics and Doubloons will no longer be up for grabs.

Patch 1.1.7 brings bug fixes and performance improvements, along with extended lore around the story of Merry Merrick. You may notice the Pennant flags no longer change when you raise a Ship flag... this may be a hint to an exciting change on the horizon.

Many long-time wanderers on the Sea of Thieves will remember Salty, one of the first entrepreneurs to set up shop at an Outpost. He informs the Pirate Times that after many months spent seeking a 'killer' item to sell, he's found something special that will surprise new and old customers alike. Salty even has a new business partner, but is keeping details quiet until it's time to make a splash.

Looking for new crewmates? We've got a bunch of places you can visit to seek out like-minded pirates, so sail on over to these official Sea of Thieves hangouts:

  • Patch Notes - 1.1.6

    Ahoy pirates!

This patch brings the Gunpowder Skeletons event to a close. These explosive skeletons will still remain in the world, but thanks to your hard work, their numbers have decreased!

Need a way to earn some more Bilge Rat Doubloons? Not to worry, the Bilge Rats have another adventure for you – The Sunken Curse! Along with a new reason for you to explore the watery depths, Patch 1.1.6 brings with it key performance improvements, crash fixes and additional fixes for other known issues.

Bilge Rats Adventure - The Sunken Curse

Rumours of artefacts beneath the waves are being whispered across the Outposts, and as usual the Bilge Rats already know all about it! Underwater statues and dangerous curses are amongst their tavern tales, so take a deep breath before diving into this Bilge Rat Adventure!

    alt text

    • Sunken Curse Event - Cursed Mermaid Statues are the latest addition to Sea of Thieves. Hidden in the shallows around island shores, they radiate ancient magic. For this adventure, the Bilge Rats are challenging all brave pirates to seek out and destroy the statues. Not all statues are bound by the same curse but they all regenerate health over time, and while some will require more firepower than others to destroy, no more than four players will be required to destroy even the toughest statue.
    • Sunken Items - It's not all malevolent curses in the shallows! Eagle-eyed pirates can also find artefacts, skulls and treasure chests hidden on the seabed ready to be plundered.
    • The Wailing Barnacle Cosmetics - The Hat, Dress and Jacket of The Wailing Barnacle have been added to the Bilge Rat shop. These items are time-limited and only purchasable with Bilge Rat Doubloons, so get them before they sink back to the depths on July 25th.
    • Bilge Rat Titles - Earn three unique titles introduced with The Sunken Curse event and equip them straight from the Vanity Chest!
    • Bilge Rat Doubloons - There are 100 Bilge Rat Doubloons available for the standard Commendations, and an additional 50 Bilge Rat Doubloons available for completing the Legendary Commendation and becoming a Legendary Curse Breaker. Each of The Sunken Curse Commendations on the Bilge Rat progress screen details the number of Bilge Rat Doubloons it rewards. You have until July 25th to earn Bilge Rat Doubloons by completing these Commendations.

    alt text

    • Bilge Rat Flag - A new flag has been added to all pirates' flag inventories! This new flag can be used to show other pirates that they're on the hunt for Bilge Rat Doubloons.

    Updates

    • The Wailing Barnacle Tattoo Set - Now available in the clothing shop on all Outposts, this tattoo set is purchasable with gold and here to stay!
    • Legendary Skeleton Exploder Title - We heard feedback from our community that Legendary Commendations are deserving of a Legendary Title, so we have now introduced the 'Legendary Skeleton Exploder' Title. Existing players who have met the criteria can grab it in the Bilge Rat shop for free. If players unlock the Legendary Commendations required for Gunpowder Skeletons in the future, they will automatically be awarded this Title.
    • Loading Screens - These now give players information about the latest goings-on and what's new in Sea of Thieves.
    • Front End Animations - Pirate animations have been updated when entering the game through the front end.
    • UI Update - A small banner is shown on Commendations within the Bilge Rat progress screen when there are Bilge Rat Doubloons to be earned.

Further improvements and optimisations for all platforms are ongoing.

We have applied a hotfix for the issue effecting Athena Voyages. This issue should now be resolved.
    • Bilge Rat Doubloons which were earned but not rewarded correctly as part of the Skeleton Thrones Bilge Rats Adventure will be awarded.
We are rolling out a fix over the next few days for players to receive Bilge Rat Doubloons which were not awarded correctly for the Skeleton Thrones event.
    • Upon impact, cannonball knockback no longer causes unintended damage to fellow crew members.
    • Bear & Bird Figurehead Loading Screen is now localised in all available languages.
    • Mysterious Stranger conversation text is now correctly localised in German, French, Italian and Spanish.
    • Ghost Trousers no longer appear broken on certain body types.
    • Bilge Rat Trousers no longer appear inconsistent when equipped with a peg leg and mid-length boots.
    • The Bilge Rat progression UI now correctly counts Gunpowder Skeletons event Titles towards the overall Title count.
    • The option to enable and disable the Player Talking Indicator has been added back into Settings.
    • Players should now see all their items once they have joined a new server.
    • Loading Screen tips should no longer be clipping on 4:3 display screens.

    Known Issues

    • The 'Gunpowder Plot' Commendation and its Legendary Commendation counterpart may not unlock.
We are investigating a fix for this issue. The time-limited Gunpowder Skeletons event cosmetics will be available again in the future for any players wishing to complete the set.
    • The Hungering Deep rewards were not received by a number of players who earned them.
We are investigating a resolution for this and will share information when available.
    • Players may experience details of their pirate (such as hair colour / scars) looking different from their initial selection.
Players who have experienced a physical appearance change to their pirate unrelated to hair colour have been reverted to their original selection. Changes to pirates’ hair colour will be reverted during next week’s maintenance window. This issue occurred as part of the team’s ongoing work to give players greater control over their pirate’s hair colour. We’re continuing to work on bringing hair colour customisation options to the game and will let you know when they’re in place!
    • Some players travel in an unintended direction when fired from a cannon.
    • Some players may continue to hear muffled sound after being fired from a cannon.
We have reports that being fired out of a cannon again clears the muffled sound.

The Commendations and Titles will still be available after the event ends, but the time-limited cosmetics and Doubloons will no longer be up for grabs.

To mark 20 Years of Banjo-Kazooie, players will now be able to purchase a majestic Bear & Bird Figurehead for a very fitting price of 1998 gold! This figurehead is only available during the month of July, so make sure you join in the celebration and purchase it while you can!

This week we've banned a number of players who we've been able to confirm have been cheating. Those players have been contacted via email and we've removed their Sea of Thieves account privileges. We will continue enforcing a zero tolerance policy to this behaviour and taking regular action against any players who are found to be cheating.

  • Patch Notes - 1.1.2

    Ahoy pirates!

Battered and broken by the cannon fire of an entire sea of adversaries, the Hungering One has returned to the depths and can no longer be summoned. Does this mean the waters are safe to sail again? Not for long. She may be the mightiest of her kind, but she is not the only one of her kind. From the next patch, the surface will be breached by others following in her wake. A new age of predators has dawned and things will never be the same again...

For now a different kind of thrilling adventure has arrived! The first of our regular events introduces Skeleton Thrones. Patch 1.1.2 also brings further improvements for our colour blind pirates and multiple fixes for known issues.

Do you consider yourself a well travelled Pirate who knows the map of the seas like the back of their hook? Combine this with eagle-eye precision with your cannon skill and you may well earn your crew some fine booty this week!

    alt text

    • Skeleton Thrones Event – The Skeleton Thrones are the latest addition to the world of Sea of Thieves. These thrones require a good sense of discovery to find, and for some an even steadier aim to reach. Look high, look low, and look within…

    • Bilge Rat Doubloons – The Bilge Rats trade in their own currency, they don’t have time for gold or any of that official stuff. Each Commendation in the progress screen details the amount of Bilge Rat Doubloons it unlocks with a total of 100 Doubloons available through the Skeleton Thrones event.
    • Bilge Rat Cosmetics – Spend your Bilge Rat Doubloons on exclusive time-limited items too! You have until the 26th of June to purchase the Bone Crusher Hat, Jacket and Dress – priced at 20 Doubloons per item.
    • Bilge Rat Trading – If you’re feeling a thirst for a little extra gold in ye’ pocket or fancy some Reputation in any of the three Trading Companies, the Bilge Rats can also pull a few strings and allow you to trade your Doubloons towards a bit of progress. These latter progression items will be a permanent part of the Bilge Rat shop and aren’t time limited, so make your choice wisely!
    • Bilge Rat Titles – Completing five of the smaller Skeleton Thrones will unlock a unique Pirate Title, and finding all ten will unlock a unique Pirate Title. These titles will unlock straight into your Vanity Chest for maximum bragging rights.

    Cosmetics

    alt text

Looking for new crew mates? We've got a bunch of places you can visit to seek out like-minded pirates, so sail on over to the official Sea of Thieves:

  • Patch Notes - 1.0.7

    Ahoy pirates!

This week's patch introduces the first version of a much requested feature, "Open and Closed Crews"! This feature provides players with greater control over how they assemble their crew with reserved slots that friends can join in whenever they’re ready. We hope this mitigates one of the key reasons for people misusing the brig and will be monitoring this closely! We'd love to hear your feedback in the "Open and Closed Crews" Mega Thread.

    Features

    alt text

    • This Seat is Taken - Players now have two crew type options available to them, Open and Closed Crews.
Open Crews: This option works in the same way you’re used to. For the Galleon, an open crew will match four players together while also replacing players who leave during a game. For the Sloop, two players will be matched together, with a leaving player being replaced when possible.
Closed Crews: This option allows a single player to begin a game on either a Galleon or a Sloop, allowing friends to join in when they’re available. You can now play with any configuration of players up to the limit on each ship, which is 4 players on the Galleon and 2 players on the Sloop, as well as preventing non-friends from being able to join you. This option replaces the 3 player Galleon and Solo Sloop options in the Main Menu.
Coming Soon: Additional functionality coming soon for Open and Closed Crews includes the ability to dynamically switch between Open and Closed while in the game, in addition to being able to make a session fully private by preventing friends joining.

    Updates

    • Here, take this! - Imagine the scene, skeletons surround your crew, your crew-mate has been bitten by a snake, they have no bananas and there are no resource barrels in sight! Now you can help them CRONCH their way to full health by handing them a banana! This also works with wooden planks and cannon balls. You helpful pirate you!
Unfortunately this feature is causing an issue and needs to be temporarily removed from Patch 1.0.7 while we investigate further.
    • Who Goes There? - When swimming underwater, gamertag and Player Titles are no longer visible. Now you can #BeMoresneakyPirate!
    • Now in Stock! - Imperial Sovereign Blunderbuss, Pistol, Sails, Hull and Liveries are now available to purchase in the Ancient Isles. They were incorrectly listed as available in Patch 1.0.6.
    • Flintlock Pistol - New sound effects for close fire and reloading the Flintlock Pistol.
    • Icons - Within the clothing chest, the icons to unequip all or select a random outfit have been updated.
    • Health Bar UI - Deciding whether to eat that banana or keep swiping your sword? You'll notice some changes to the health bar UI, fancy!

    Progression & Economy Updates

    • Price Changes - Greedy pirates had overpriced the Castaway Bilge Rat weapons and ship liveries. These have now been reduced. Anyone who purchased items within this set pre-price adjustment will have the difference reimbursed very soon.
    • Strike Gold - As Pirates rank up with all the trading companies, the chances of finding more valuable rewards has been increased. Say good-bye to those Castaway Chests at higher ranks!

    • Players should no longer experience delayed achievements and commendations from in-game actions.
During last week's maintenance window we made improvements to our servers and services which should have resolved both of the above issues. If you are still encountering the above two issues, please log a Support Ticket so we can investigate this further.
    • Resolved issue that sometimes showed riddle landmarks as glowing rocks.
    • Resolved an issue on Old Faithful Isle which could have prevented players from completing riddle voyages.
    • Bounty Captains and Crew will no longer have their names mixed up.
    • Gunpowder Barrels will no longer cause two explosions if detonated when being held by a player.

    • Cannonball, wooden plank and banana crates no longer always spawn empty.
    • Restarting the game will no longer reset the frame rate lock option.

Looking for new crew mates? We've got a bunch of places you can visit to seek out like-minded pirates, so sail on over to the official Sea of Thieves:

  • Patch Notes - 1.0.6

    Ahoy pirates!

We read your feedback in the Customisation Mega Threads and in other parts of the community about the limited variety of available options to dress and customise your pirate. This weeks patch delivers the first wave of cosmetics into shops in the form of expanded sets for Admiral, Bilge Rat, Sea Dog and Sovereign.

Alongside the new cosmetics variations, you'll find that shop stock varies from outpost to outpost, depending on the region you’re in. Don't worry, you can pick up your new Bilge Rat gear in all regions, but you'll have to head to the Ancient Isles to pick up the new Sovereign set!

In addition to more customisation options, Patch 1.0.6 also includes our regular performance improvements and bug fixes.

    Customisation Variety

    • Regional Stock - Shopkeepers in different regions now only stock certain item sets, due to some mistimed deliveries.
    • Strike a Pose - We’ve expanded our clothing range to include the Executive Admiral, Grand Admiral, Rotten Bilge Rat, Castaway Bilge Rat, Corsair Sea Dog, Ruffian Sea Dog and Imperial Sovereign sets.
    • Ship Shape - Multiple sets of ship cosmetics have been added to the shipwright stock. Now you can purchase and equip Grand Admiral, Castaway Bilge Rat, Ruffian Sea Dog and Imperial Sovereign ship customisation sets.
    • Ohh, Shiny! - Visit the weapon shops at the many outposts to find their stocks of Grand Admiral, Castaway Bilge Rat, Ruffian Sea Dog and Imperial Sovereign weapons. Fancy a new weapon style? We’re sure one of these will take your fancy!

    alt text

    • “Launch Crew” Eye of Reach - In celebration of being at sea for a month, we've added a special weapon to the store. This limited edition item will only be available for two weeks, so grab yours while you still can at a very reasonable price of 1 Gold!

    Updates

    • Tutorial Invulnerability - Players are no longer invulnerable during parts of the Tutorial when first launching the game.
This should resolve confusion around players seemingly being invulnerable at outposts. We take all reports very seriously, so please log a Support Ticket and we will investigate further.
    • Skeletons Accuracy - When shooting cannons from islands at long distances, Skeleton accuracy has been reduced. We read your feedback that it was a little extreme... #SkellyOP!
    • Merchant Voyages - It is no longer possible to force Merchant voyages to request delivery to a specific outpost. Now you'll have to earn your cheddar.
    • Sneaky Climbing - The bell on the small ship has been moved to the other side of the ladder, to avoid accidental ringing. We're redecorating! With the Ammo Crate and Bell moved, what are we moving next?

    Fixed Issues

    • [PC Only] Rebinding to the F key will no longer soft lock the radial.
This has been a top reported issue to Support, and we believe this is now resolved. If you are still encountering issues with this rebind locking the screen, please log a Support Ticket and we will investigate further.
    • Stow and Disengage can now be rebound to the same button on a controller
    • Incorrect company icons will no longer be displayed for a split second if trying to get reputation from two different Trading Companies.

    • Significant reductions in time taken to return from the Ferry of the Damned.

    Updates

    • New Message from Beyond - The Ferryman was unhappy with the text that had been written describing how to 'Scuttle' a ship, so he made them write a better version - and then walk the plank.

  • Patch Notes - 1.0.4

It's been just over three weeks since we launched Sea of Thieves, and a lot has happened since then! We've been listening to you all, and we know you are keen to hear how we plan to grow Sea of Thieves. As we've always said, launch is just the start, and we are going to grow and evolve the game with feedback from our community. It feels like the right time to reveal how we'll do this.

Our first content update, The Hungering Deep, will release in May and bring with it a new AI threat to the world. Watch our Inside Story and read our Content Plan Article to get you all caught up on what is coming next in Sea of Thieves!
