Swapping back and fourth between Windows Store and Steam versions of Sea of Thieves?

  • I recently purchased a copy of Sea of Thieves on Steam because I was having beard problems with the Windows Store version (after not having issues for over 1,600 hours). The Steam version runs great and I have eliminated the beard issues by using it. I think I alleviated the beard issues I was experiencing with the Windows Store version and would like to default to using it since it tracks Xbox profile stats like meters sailed, chests turned in, etc. (while Steam does not track these).

The issue is when I try to join a friend's game from either Game Bar or the Xbox app itself it force loads the Steam version of Sea of Thieves even if I already have the Windows Store version open in running. I can load into boats on both versions but accepting friend's invites always forces me back to the Steam version. What determines which of the two version will load when joining a friend's game?

I would like to keep both copies installed in the situation that I run into issues with the other. I just need to find a way to default joining friend's games to load through the Windows Store version not the Steam version. Any help is much appreciated, thanks!

  • @wouldthoukindly Have you tried unlinking your Xbox account in the Steam version? Doubtful it will change it but it couldn't hurt to try it. All you have to do is click 'unlink' and anytime you want to relink you just hit the button and use your Xbox/Live credentials to re-link.

  • @dr-awesome4460 Yep, tried that. I've tried a handful of things. Signing out and unlinking Xbox from Steam doesn't fix the issue.

I'll have to test tonight but I did unlink my Steam... from the Xbox app and also uninstalled/reinstalled the Windows Store version. I'll post my findings after work.

  • @wouldthoukindly I have had the same issue and have determined it's one or the other. You may need to delete either the windows version or Steam copy.

  • I've uninstalled Steam. Uninstalled the Xbox App and reinstalled the Xbox App.

I can not get into friends games at all even with Steam uninstalled.

When I click join game nothing happens.

  • There is likely a registry key that controls this and it probably doesn't get removed when you uninstall the Steam version since it's not created by the Steam install process.

If you know what you're doing, you could try searching for the install path in the registry to see what is in there that might be left behind. There will likely be a key linking to the full .EXE path for the steam version somewhere.

  • When I just had the Steam version and I got an invite, it only used the Steam version when I had already started the game in Steam, otherwise it would open the MS store one.

Don't know if it's still like this as I don't accept an invitation unless I have the Steam SoT started.

  • @lem0n-curry sadly it's a lot more complicated than that. I wish it were that simple.
