Ultrawide (21:9 or higher) setups don't appear to have correct FoV being displayed.

  • I'm not even sure that it's an issue with the "90" FOV value that's shown in the settings. I can play with 90 FoV on other FPS-type games without issue or motion sickness. In Sea of Thieves however, motion sickness comes on fast. Also comparing the actual camera views of rough distances between SoT and other FPS shows that SoT "90" is not 90 degrees on ultrawides.

I believe that there may be a miscalculation happening with the FoV in ultrawide setups. I AM NOT ADVOCATING CHANGING GAME FILES, JUST STATING THIS FOR DISCUSSION: One of the previous "not approved community fixes" was to edit a file and change the FoV calculation from the X-axis to the Y-axis on the monitor. This basically removed the wide aspect of the screen out of the FoV calculation. I am positing that the 90 FoV calculation on widescreen (21:9) setups doesn't actually give you 90 degrees of field of view. Can we get any proof/response on this from the team?

The 21 part of that aspect ratio may be causing the same FoV values to appear much lower on widescreen setups.

  • what suggestions do you have?

  • If it is 'increase FoV' then the answer has already been given in the previously locked thread....

  • @bmg6562 once in a while I reinstall SoT just to check if the issue has been resolved. Sadly nothing so far.
Back in the early days when the fov went higher than 90 everything was fine. I was having the time of my life.
I don't even necessarily need an fov higher than 90 but the scaling on a 21:9 monitor needs to be fixed.
It is currently showing you less vertically when it should be showing you more horizontally.

This literally makes the game look like your sitting a nose length away from the screen.
I know the devs think this is about gaining an unfair advantage in pvp. It's not. It's about people trying to play a game and not being able to do so.

  • @tschibow and @bmg6562
Put in a support ticket here. They might be able to help you troubleshoot and if not, they can have it in their list of issues to hotfix. Posting here does nothing.

    Happy Sailing!
