Using a skull fort key on active skull fort - Fair play?

  • In the past there's been discussions about using a skull fort key on inactive forts. Of course you end up using they key to open an empty vault. Now that skull forts are popping up more frequently my fellow crew mates and I had a different experience last night.

We rolled up on an active skull fort and chased a sloop away. To our surprise the vault had already been opened and some barrels and loot remained. We concluded that the earlier sloop had held onto a skull fort key from a prior fort and opened the vault on the active fort we were on. We decided to complete the waves and take the key with us to open the next available active fort. Later that night after defeating skelly ships we made our way to the next skull fort that popped up. It was definitely exciting running off with loot out of the vault with the skeleton hordes shooting and chasing you. We thought of the poor pirates whose hopes would be dashed when they came knocking on the new active fort.

I have mixed feelings over this scenario. It was humorous to roll up on an active skull fort with an empty vault. We kept the cycle going by doing the same thing on the next skull fort. The skeletons avoided entering the empty vault. Should it be considered a bug?

What do me fellow pirates say?

  • Well this always been the case in this game it's just more noticeable now as the forts are far more frequent. I have tested this out long before any one mention this in the forum. The fact is it seem to be the way it was intended to work so i really can't designate it as a bug as it acts the way you would expect it to. But as to a flaw in design is a topic for discussion. I personal don't see this as a much of a flaw in design but that might just be a biased opinion as it is almost incosequental in comparison to some of the Larger design flaws i see in this game all the time. So i don't really see this as an issue besides all that would need to be done to reset this is have a fort time out and another pop up. It 's an issue that will eventually correct itself so long a players don't do this on a consistent bases. That just my anaysis.

  • Being a strategist I tend to appreciate this option. Most players take their time getting to forts, thinking they have 15-20 minutes before it gets close to being popped. If I'm playing for awhile I'll keep the 1st key and jump on the forts quickly. We used this strategy 2 of the last 3 days with great success.

  • The fact that you can look into the fort to see if there is loot or not before defeating it makes this completely viable in my opinion. I once sailed with a crew that was a key ahead of every fort we went to. It’s always nice having an extra key up your sleeve haha

  • Hi @samuraijack, this has always been part of the game and I don't see it as an issue or flaw. I've used many keys in other forts for numerous reasons.

For example; I've acquired keys through sinking ships that had them on board or found randomly in the world (guessing crews have hidden them there). With these I don't know what fort they're from so just wait for the next to pop up then go'n grab the loot.

Could also have hostile crews waiting at the fort so, if you have the time, hanging out for the next fort may be the easier option.

  • That sounds like a bug. One of the distinguishing characteristics of a “key” is that it only opens one particular lock. Otherwise people (or things) wouldn’t bother with them.

    On the other hand...

There is one type of key that opens many locks. They call it a “skeleton key”. Hmmm...

But no. Definitely a bug. 🙂

  • Why didn't you go to see the other forts? The one they got the key from, should still have the loot inside the vault...

  • One of the things I find funny is thinking about the server jumpers that do forts.Once we call it a night, they now have to visit up to 8 other forts to get the gold or exit.😂

  • Not a bug, its just the way the key works.

Also remember that if there is an active fort with the vault opened, there is likely an inactive fort with a closed vault full of loot somewhere.
