In the past there's been discussions about using a skull fort key on inactive forts. Of course you end up using they key to open an empty vault. Now that skull forts are popping up more frequently my fellow crew mates and I had a different experience last night.
We rolled up on an active skull fort and chased a sloop away. To our surprise the vault had already been opened and some barrels and loot remained. We concluded that the earlier sloop had held onto a skull fort key from a prior fort and opened the vault on the active fort we were on. We decided to complete the waves and take the key with us to open the next available active fort. Later that night after defeating skelly ships we made our way to the next skull fort that popped up. It was definitely exciting running off with loot out of the vault with the skeleton hordes shooting and chasing you. We thought of the poor pirates whose hopes would be dashed when they came knocking on the new active fort.
I have mixed feelings over this scenario. It was humorous to roll up on an active skull fort with an empty vault. We kept the cycle going by doing the same thing on the next skull fort. The skeletons avoided entering the empty vault. Should it be considered a bug?
What do me fellow pirates say?
