This game brings out the scariest side of people.

  • I post a lot about how to be friendly in this game. I was just talking to another user @dreiFois about out experiences in the game. We are both non aggressive nice players who will give all our treasure up rather than fight. And it made me realize something. He was telling me a story about trying to be nice to people and even went to give them all his treasure and they still killed him. I think about all the times I was just doing nothing or trying to give people things and they killed me or just killed me for no reason.

    Why is that scary?

You get no prize for killing someone in this game. There nothing. No number, no kill count or tracker, no achievements, nothing. Killing someone only kills them.

That means people are killing just to kill.

    That's pretty scary.

    :D

  • If you kill a ton of people on a server the game will actually post a warning on a post in the taverns, next to the bartender, saying "Beware of the notorious pirate killer insert gamertag here". That's the only kind of a reward I've seen. And it's not even a reward.

  • I was on a sloop docked at an outpost earlier, a Galleon pulls up and starts unloading there stuff. I waved at them and said ahoy, they done the same back. After they handed there stuff in i waved them off on the pier as they sailed away on there next voyage. Then i got on with mine.

Not everyones "Bad" and PvPing doesnt make you a bad person either.

  • @edemardil honest question... why on earth would you give up your treasure? My crew we get as much as we possibly can, by any and all means necessary. And you give away??

  • @lungfool Those wanted posters you have seen are not for that, they are in game eastereggs rewarded to community members for doing certain feats in game or being a positive community member. :)

  • @edemardil i love pvp in the game, but i have been sunk while solo after just leaving an outpost so no way in hell did i have any chests on board, only to be attacked, sunk and got some rather nasty verbal abuse for not having any loot they could take lol even had my cannons pointed up to show i wasnt going to fight back.

i was just a (cat word here) for not wanting to fight, what was the point i had nothing to defend anyway lol

  • @knifelife oh ok thanks for the info

  • @edemardil
I don't know your exact situation but generally i would say people kill because they have the fear that the other ones would kill them and take all their stuff. So kill before you get killed.

Of course not all of them. Some are just mean. One time we had a big trader quest with like 4 pigs and 6 chicken and it took us much time to get them. Then when we went to an outpost 2 guys killed one of us while trying to sell a pig, stole it and sold it. They maybe get 100 gold for the pig, when they don't have the fitting quest for it but we four players had no extra cage and no time and werent able to finish the quest due to that.

On the other side we had situations near outposts where we got close to other ships when we were leaving and another ship was coming to the outpost but it went completely friendly. Often (when both had small ships) the ships were sailing big circles around outposts, waiting for another ship to get ready.

  • This makes me think of the time, I was on a sloop, we had a few lower tier items nothing to fancy. Two Galleons went straight past each other and 1 just followed us from West to East for 20minutes just to sink us...

  • This game talks about you. About me. About (some) PVP players as well. :)

  • @mr-realpancakes i have been a part of that as well, was playing with my son (14 years old) and showing him the game, when a galleon chased us, we had 1 pig cage on board, we sailed past another outpost and another galleon came out of nowhere and joined in the chase, we had 2 of them on our tale lol they just ignored each other.

the dambdest thing was when we eventually got sunk they just sailed by each other and not fire a single shot at each other, 30 min chase in the end : /

  • I just got into this one game and was instantly put in the brigade. Then they filled the hull with water to drown me. They were dancing and waving the whole time.

  • @cavemancronch super frustrating, it was also going to be my friends first drop off since Beta. He was quite angry, luckly one of our friends hopped on so we swapped to a 3/4 man because another friend hopped on 10minutes later. So he cheered up. But it's annoying, but it was also day one so we weren't that great with cannons yet to fight back.

  • It sucks, i play solo and I'd like to just do a couple of quests in a row and then go to an outpost for a big score, but you can't trust anyone so i find myself going to an outpost every time i get an item just to make sure i don't lose it. Like do 4 man ships really find it fun taking on 1 man sloops that don't fight back

  • @oathshinigami
I turned in 23 chest at once solo one time and never ran into anyone!

  • It is pretty interesting how long some people will chase you. I once asked a guy that was chasing me what he was getting out of it. He didn't respond.

  • @sergent-c****r its not always like that, i collect as much as i can, check the area through the spy glass, if i see a ship i don't really see an option other then to get the chests to an outpost, i avoid fights as much as possible and usually let them kill me just to show i won't fight, i only play to collect items and level up

  • @oathshinigami
I like blowing stuff up with powder kegs!!!! One time I put a powder keg in front of the gold guy and shot it just before a guy turned in a chest and got this chest called the stronghold chest off him it was worth a lot of money!!!

  • @sergent-c****r good for you

  • @oathshinigami
Yeah thanks! I was pretty excited!! Want to go sailing together some time?

  • @sergent-c****r yeah sure

  • @dairadh That was really interesting and sad. Thanks!

That's sure, not everyone is 'bad', and PvP is not a bad thing at all.
Personally, all I'd like would be having great battles and befriend as much 'enemy' crews as possible. We can both sink, but why shouldn't we have a party after that?
Just waving is boring, why can't we have some fun? Why everyone's always in a hurry?

Oh, that clown is still there, bothering us. Perhaps this is just a trap! He wants to befriend us, but then he'll betray us, let's kill him once and for all!

Ok then, either let's get rid of the non verbal communication wheel, or introduce paint cannonballs. This is getting too serious! :))

Probably because you need it more than us?

Exactly this. I believe that particular player killed some 35 pirates on one session during early beta. And they put that poster up to commemorate the occasion.

There are a bunch of different little things around the world with player name tags ascribed near them. Often the environment they are in gives a hint as to the nature of their achievements / accomplishments in the beta.

I think it's pretty awesome they did that :)

  • @edemardil people play fps games for hundreds of hours just to brag about their kill/death ratio.

Why is this scary to you? Video games are designed to let you do all the things u can't do in real life.

Whether that's digging up treasure on the open seas or anonymously killing someone for the heck of it is irrelevant

  • @sergent-c****r I developed a certain set of skills over a short time period. I sneak on to unsuspecting ship and sit in the bottom of the ship. Whilst underway I eat all the bananas from their storage and I then jump out the back of the ship.. they never see it coming... I call it passive-aggressive pirating.

  • @clon3wolf
Was it you that took my bananas?!?!

  • @clon3wolf

You and your gorilla warfare tactics!!!!
You made me so made I almost quit!

  • I agree with the main title. I mostly play with a 4 men ship and the rule is to shot on sight. I hate that kind of behavior but when you are part of a group it´s hard to swim against the flow. They always want to attack first because whoever starts a fight gets the initial advantage and if we play with our guards down we mostly likely get screwed. Thats reflex of the way the society is, again.
When I play solo I dont like to attack anyone and not because I suck at pvp but because I am a not agressive player and I´d rather go my own way then buying a fight for no reason. I would love to play on a PvE server so whoever like to PvP go do it, and whoever doesnt like it are not "FORCED", yes forced, this is the stupidest part of this game IMHO. And before you call me a noob I am beyond lev 35 with all factions.

And I never said it did. I said killing people for no reward other than to kill people, is bad.

    I like people.

  • I'm also a passive pirate and never shoot first. I usually play a tune and reassure that I'm friendly and mean them no harm. Lately I've noticed several times players have also played along so I invite them aboard for a sing along thinking they are also friendly but once onboard they play 2 notes of the shanty and then shoot me in the face even when I have no treasure aboard. Why? :-(
