Just deal with the greifing...

@timidobserver Turn randoms into friends and BOOM you've stopped playing with randoms and have a long term crew.
(If they stick with the game, that is)

That can work in some situations where there is a misunderstanding, but when you get instantly brigged, puke bucketed, and pelted with profanity over the mic, friendship probably isn't going to happen.

  • I have only encountered griving once; it was in the form of spawn camping.

I was playing solo and a galleon engaged me near an island. One of there crew managed to board my sloop and kill me. I didn't have any chest or anything else of value so I wasn't too concerned. I respawned on my boat only to be killed again instantly.

How did I deal "deal with the griving..."?

I scuttled my sloop a few moments before respawning again. Once I respawned in the water I saw the fellow who had boarded and killed me twice swimming away from me. So I started to swim after him. He never noticed he was being chased. Their galleon came to pick him up and I managed to sneak on board right behind him without being noticed...

I went straight to their captian's quarters where I found sooo many chests. I knew there was no way I could win a fight against 4 of them and I didn't have a way to steal their treasure for myself...so I decided to grieve the grievers...I brought every single chest they had (it had to be 8-10 of them) to the balcony that wraps around the captain's quarters and then chucked every last one of them into the sea.

A couple of minutes after I unburdened their ship they stopped at an island (presumably on the next leg of their voyage) where I made a suicide run at them. I didn't manage to kill any of them (nor did I really expect to); I really did it so I could get back to the mermaid. But I had exacted my revenge.

That whole encounter probably cost me 10 minutes of my time....God only knows how much of their time I tossed into the ocean.

I wouldn't have done it if they had just killed me once, raided my supplies, and left....But they spawn killed me.

That is how I deal with grivers.

  • @a-cranky-eskimo What are you talking about? Weakness of mind and body? We are talking about harassment and what to do about it, personally i don't think calling the people being harassed weak makes any sense at all. What sort of motivation do you need to stop a team mate from repeatedly dropping anchor or bringing a powder keg aboard and sinking your ship? Why does this keep coming down to "get good at game" seriously we are talking about harassment plan and simple, people are not coming for your cannons.

  • @rudeverb I never said call them weak. Clearly you don’t understand my post at all. And never said get good or anything like that, but god forbid anyone suggests the solution to being harassed is to not let it happen again, learn to be aware of a person on your crew who grabs a barrel and goes below decks, and brig them, im talking about the majority of pve whiners not rascist or bigots or trolls on your crew. The OP seemed to be more about these pvers than harassment.

@rudeverb I agree that crew trolling is more an actual problem, but no, voicing a complaint about harrassment isn’t always valid. People can play victim to get whatever reaction they want in today’s society, it’s like a plague. Designing the game around these complaints would kill the core concept of the game.

They should always be heard, but aren’t always valid, if that’s what you mean. If they aren’t valid telling the player to put in some effort or stop being overly sensitive isn’t a bad route. Weakness of mind or body because of lack of effort isn’t something to be protected or catered to. I know this is just a game but it still applies on some level, whether or not most people ever realize it in their lifetime. It’s better to get beat up once and learn to defend yourself rather than cry about the person who did it, as valid as the opinion may be, if these players want the solutions it starts with them.

I have motivational issues irl and As much as I hate that finding a solution is up to the person with the problems attitude more than anything else, it’s true.

Reread it and respond to anything besides the one part that was a general concept not specific to the topic. And don’t leave out the “because of lack of effort” part and quote me out of context ever again please lol.. also said “I know this is just a game” after that example. And “as valid as the complaint may be” I’m talking about players solving the problem for themselves to some degree, and never said complaints shouldn’t be heard, but again rare can’t just magically make people play nice. The opinion of what trolling is varies and some people may want to adjust their opinion on both ends of the spectrum, not speaking about you specifically.
