can we get some love for the old Shores of Gold tall tales?

  • I understand that its been a while since these tall tales were released, but seriously, can they get some attention? Currently they are really buggy, have a lot of really outdated and tedious stuff, and in general can be annoying to complete.

I'm sure there are people who like how the tall tales haven't changed that much, but I feel like they could be changed in a way that isn't too much, but still fits what the game is like now. Heres some stuff I would like to see:

    1. Please, just patch some bugs. Revenge of the Morningstar can randomly fail, and sometimes you don't get the checkpoint when it says you do. The Gold Hoarder- the literal final boss of the entire questline- can glitch and become unkillable...

    2. Some parts in the tall tales are just... Straight up unfun. The part where you need to fire yourself out of a cannon onto the ancient statue during the Shores of Gold, while a cool idea, kind of ruined by the fact that you need to realllly slowly move your ship around the island... Take care not to crash into any rocks... Get your ship in just the right spot... Oops, wait, watch out for that sandbank that your ship can super easily crash into... I've only done this on a sloop, I cannot imagine having to do this on a larger ship. Then, there's the tall tales that are just a boring "dig up these items using an either extremely easy or overly convoluted puzzle" (Do not even get me started on the legendary storyteller) I'm not sure of a way to change these fetch quest tall tales without completely reworking them, but maybe there is a way to make them at least a bit less annoying.

    3. The dialogue. Please, allow us to skip it. Now, while on some you can just leave and do the tall tale when the starting npc begins talking, there are some parts that have needlessly long dialogue. Graymarrow, please, I don't need to hear your monologue for the 5th time, I'm trying to get my gold curse, just fight me already... Pirate Lord, I know its not about the gold, now please stop yapping and let me out of this boss arena. (There's also some problems with the in-combat voice lines, but those are more funny than annoying, like with Graymarrow sometimes trying to say 3 different lines at once)

Anyway, that was some stuff that I would like changed/fixed. Mostly, the Tall Tales are awesome, but I do think Rare could dedicate a bit of attention to them.

  • You know you can sword lunge from the rocks nearby the statue to get onto the gap right? No need to bring the ship all the way around. Hope that helps for next time!

  • @gameglarb
Been there, done that...got the curse!

There are some continuity issues with Golden Sands/Port Merrick that should be updated. Especially if the characters can refer to it openly, "I hear they call Golden Sands: Port Merrick now."

This is the polish I'd use and any bug fixes.

You need to explore the island more and you will find, you can simply Jump (sword jump) from the back of the mountain.

the fact that you need to realllly slowly move your ship around the island...

Or park it in the front...

Take care not to crash into any rocks...

Much like every other island you sail too xD

Then, there's the tall tales that are just a boring "dig up these items using an either extremely easy or overly convoluted puzzle"

Define "Boring" because you kind of described a normal Riddle Voyage here xD

make them at least a bit less annoying.

    Google shortcuts.

The dialogue. Please, allow us to skip it

Good storytelling, its at these moments you take a moment to gather your things, prep for work and once you realized they finished. You be ready to go.

I do think Rare could dedicate a bit of attention to them.

Maybe fix any bugs, but they already gutted them from "Super Long and tiring" to just "Long and Easy"

  • @burnbacon i must admit i did not know you could sword lunge to get to the ancient structure. Thats my bad.

However, as for the other things- Not every tall tale has a shortcut like that to remove an annoying part. And just because you can do something to make a grind a bit less annoying doesn’t mean that change should never happen to certain Tales.

  • @gameglarb any glitches that are still a problem yes the should be fixed as to making them easier(more convenient) that's a no their fine as the are no need to fix what's not broke now future Tall Tales could get new and exciting mechanics sure

  • @otherfanboy i disagree, I think there is room for some more QoL changes in Tall Tales.

  • @gameglarb that's fair

  • @gameglarb said in can we get some love for the old Shores of Gold tall tales?:

Nah. Not a grind anymore. You have checkpoints. And the fact the game is nowhere near as violent as it used to be, I rarely have a night of being attacked by every boat on the server now, tuckers waiting on your next TT island because they know what you're doing etc. When the TT's were fresh, adventure mode wasn't full of solo sloopers like it is now.

A few of the tall tales only have to be done once, then you & your crew can just cheese the completions by loading up the final checkpoint at an outpost, one of you logs out, rest of you complete it. Crew member comes back, loads up final checkpoint. Rinse/Repeat. This technique can even be done with Shores of Gold. Kill the Goldhoarder, a crew member log out before the final cinematic starts as the goldhoarder dies.

  • I'm not sure why half the forum is here arguing.

OP's point is simple - Tall Tales could be improved. OP is right, they could. Not much more to say on it than that.

    The bugs, absolutely.
It'd be nice to allow players to skip Graymarrow's monologue on repeat runs of Revenge, I agree.
Middle point is more subjective, but I feel no need to argue on the internet about it personally. :P

And yes, the cheese method bypasses a lot of the gold curse tedium, but I'm not sure that's a good point to make here since, well, it's a -cheese-. Players cheesing things isn't an -ideal- state of affairs from a dev point of view.

Not arguing Gav - people just sharing opinion.
I'm just pointing out the grind to the gold curse is far easier now, and how to do it more time efficiently. I'm sure there's someone out there that didn't know this was possible who may find that info useful....

  • Are you reporting these bugs? Don't assume devs are aware of them because if everyone takes that stance....

  • @hiradc I am almost certain that they have been reported before, I’ve seen old posts talking about them

  • for me the shores of gold are the only tall tale set i enjoyed back in the days , the other ones never catched me again they are mostly filled with recycled puzzle design and i cant describe as someone who grew up with monkey island how bad this set of tall tales is.
