Why does this game still ignore Xbox live privacy?

  • When I go into my account and access mine and my family's Xbox live privacy settings, and select multiplayer options and then choose to block playing with anyone outside of Xbox live am I still finding myself in games with some PC players that do not have Xbox live subscriptions?

Due to the way the game is made, in relation to crossplay and the like, those PC players do have XBox live. The system doesn't let you try to cheat it, they need some support when you all are trying to segregate them off.

  • @ultmateragnarok
Untrue. Many players can purchase the game itself on PC and not additionally purchase Xbox live or gamepass to be able to play it.
I do purchase Xbox live and wish to select my privacy option to only be paired with other Xbox live users.
Why isn't it working for me?

  • @needsmokes

If players aren't purchasing XBox live then it may very well not be matchmaking them with you. Those who do purchase it are exempt from that. Alternatively, as SoT uses an entirely different matchmaking system, it could be ignoring your settings entirely. They'll be barred from some things, but not from playing in the same game.

  • @ultmateragnarok

I thought similar, but have been asking this very question to every player I have encountered for quite a while now to get a sense of how they play, and when to ask this question, if they only own the game, or gamepass, or Xbox live.
I am being paired with game only purchasers from pc too.

  • @needsmokes

In that case, it is likely because the matchmaking is done on a server rather than your own system. That server doesn't have the preference set, so it isn't going to split who you play with. If you had your own private server, you might be able to do that, but I'm not sure how private servers are going to work.

  • I think the option is only regarding PS4 and Nintendo Switch and PC only Steam though.

Windows store games still count as Xbox live even if they dont have to pay for Xbox live. We console players kinda get scammed like that.

  • Windows 10 is Microsoft...
    Microsoft is Xbox...
All they need is a windows account I think. Not %100.
If not then They do have an Xbox live account

  • @needsmokes PC players are required to log in using a xbox account using the xbox application and is how we connect to the online servers and the live environment.

This is a change in your exclusive club you will have to accept, Microsoft is embracing the development of crossplay. It is why we are all invited to the live environment. I am not sure what you are confused about, when joining a multiplayer online game that is clear on it being a crossplay title... you join a game that let's us all play together.

Also, you do know the digital version of the game is not bound to a xbox or PC and as far as I am aware, there is no PC only version purchase even released. You can play and install the game on both, even if you might play exclusively on one or the other.

Steam does not offer SoT, it is exclusive to the MS Store, and Xbox Live comes bundled with Win10

  • @needsmokes it is quite simple actually, since pc users dont actually need xbox live gold to play online. Not for sea of thieves and also not for other games (like crackdown for instance).

You are trying to bypass the crossplay aspect of this game, too bad its not working for you

  • Just because you're on PC doesn't mean you aren't paying for Xbox Live, if you have Gamepass Ultimate then you are paying for Xbox Live.

Being on PC just means you don't HAVE to pay for xbox live. If you own both PC and Xbox, it makes sense to pay for it.

This is a play anywhere game, so if they were to exclude PC players, what about people on PC who have Gamepass Ultimate? They'd still be able to play with you. They paid their money just like you.

So there'd be xbox + PC gamepass servers and xbox + PC crossplay servers, but still no xbox only servers until Rare reveal whatever plans they have for those (which if Arena is anything to go by, won't be xbox only, just xbox preferred)

I think, being honest, Rare have backed themselves into a corner here. They sold the game on PC as a play anywhere title, if they make the game unplayable on PC by segregating servers that would ruin the reputation of both Rare and Microsoft as developers for the PC platform. Which, if you watch how MS have positioned themselves in the market, is not a direction I see them moving in. Particularly, when you consider what platform streamers tend to use. You think MS is spending all that money attracting streamers to Mixer, just to burn their bridges on the PC platform? I don't.

This means that even if Rare felt there was a massive advantage for PC, they might not be able to do anything about it for commercial reasons.

At the end of the day, Rare said they were looking at how an Adventure mode opt out would work. The best thing to do now is wait and see what they say. There's nothing more substantial to discuss until we know their plans. Whatever their plans, they're likely to involve the matchmaking system, which is currently broken judging by Arena, so I don't expect any more news until after that is fixed. If that fix works well then you might just find that there isn't as much opposition to an opt out for Adventure

  • @needsmokes
The only thing I think about this is that Xbox players should be able to play SoT without a Live Gold subscription as well...

Why are Xbox players the only ones paying for their servers?

I'm not trying to bypass anything.
I have selected on my multiplayer settings on my console to play only with Xbox live users. Why are people who don't subscribe to Xbox live or even gamepass, are still able to join me on this game?
It's a genuine question. Privacy settings are there for a reason.

  • @needsmokes I've always been of the impression that Win10 users all have Live Gold as part of the Windows build. Technically they have it, which is why we're all in the same "pool" as it were.

Whether it's fair that Xbox users pay whilst PC players don't is a whole other question (I don't know what the differences are between Xbox and PC live services).

  • @needsmokes because the way microsoft set it up is that players on an XBOX need xbox live gold payed to use multiplayer services and pc players basicly get those same privileges for free. Meaning basicly every pc player playing a microsoft game has the same options as an xbox user that has the subscription.

I think that privacy setting has more to do with games like rocket league with which you can play with players from the steam platform and i believe ps4 as well

From Microsoft to the PC community, Official Console Companion Application website

    "Welcome to the Club
Create your own gaming communities with Clubs on Xbox Live. With dedicated groups organized around similar interests, playstyles, and objectives, it's easier than ever to stay connected with like-minded gamers."

We were invited to xbox live and are required to use it to sail the seas. Your option is still true, the club just recruited more members.

Frankly, I don't get why you guys don't riot with being double dipped like that. I pay internet, why should I pay more to access multiplayer? This is a pretty foreign concept to the Pc community, excluding games like WoW. If we can do it, why can't Xbox?

  • @cotu42

The page you are referring to is the Xbox console companion app, where you can stream your games to your PC from your Xbox etc.
It is an app for people who already have an Xbox and live subscriptions.

  • @NeedSmokes

If you truly believe Rare have missed something in regards to Xbox Live Privacy, you should raise this with them or Microsoft through the appropriate channels.

However, the Xbox Live Privacy settings state you will be playing with other Xbox Live users, of which, PC users are. Whether they pay or not, is irrelevant, they are still using the Xbox Live core services to connect and play with you.

The description of Xbox Live from Wikipedia:

Xbox Live (formerly stylized as Xbox LIVE) is an online multiplayer gaming and digital media delivery service created and operated by Microsoft. It was first made available to the Xbox system on November 15, 2002.[6] An updated version of the service became available for the Xbox 360 console at the system's launch in November 2005, and a further enhanced version was released in 2013 with the Xbox One.
The service was extended in 2007 on the Windows platform, named Games for Windows – Live, which makes most aspects of the system available on Windows computers. Microsoft has announced plans to extend Live to other platforms such as handhelds and mobile phones as part of the Live Anywhere initiative.

You appear to be getting Xbox Live and an Xbox Live Subscription muddled up.

No, it was also for creating XBox Live parties/groups and joining your friends games.

It's getting replaced with the GameBar and the XBox (beta) app eventually, but it is primarily used for gaming functionality on Windows.

This application is not limited for those with an xbox or have a subscription. As I am trying to explain to you: Microsoft has expanded their live environment to include their other operating systems to have one environment for their gaming community. If you haven't noticed Microsoft is adapting to make their service a platform independent tool and environment to ensure their place in the market and getting a larger slice of the pie. Whether you play on a console, PC or mobile phone one will be able to play their games and play with other like minded players regardless of what they use. They are embracing the future and using their position as the market leader on computer systems to develop their brand: Microsoft, as a whole.

To be clear, as a PC player you MUST use the companion application to connect to the xbox live environment in order to play Microsoft's games, which includes Sea of Thieves. Even if we just boot up the game, the application will be running and will sign you in before we can set sail, as it is a multiplayer. We have a xbox live account in accordance with the preference that you have selected and is why this prefence does nothing within Sea of Thieves, we are all Microsoft exclusive members and this is a Microsoft exclusive game.

Your club became more inclusive, Windows 10 users can now also join the Xbox Live community. Microsoft is pretty vocal about their goals, Xbox Play Anywhere, etc. and how it is adapting their service. You might want to keep track of game industry news if you care about these type of things.

The answer is simple: Why aren't I as a PC player being excluded from your club, as you selected in your options? Because I am a member, Microsoft invited me. It isn't hard to comprehend. I bought this game and upgraded to windows 10, because of the direction that they are going and the promises that they made.

  • @cotu42
I have been using the Xbox companion app for well over 6+ years. That is for Xbox console users.. It also states as such as its headline. Without a subscription to live, I am unable to use this as a console player.

I agree but we are stuck with their terms and conditions of owning their system. Without Xbox live subscription we cannot play games online or do anything else. It becomes a paperweight. They got us and we know it, we just do what they say and pay or not play.

  • Simply put its included in the £120 cost just for the OS (Window 10 Home)

Console users pay less for the device, but nothing for the OS therefore Microsoft recoups that through the Xbox Live subscription.

    This.

    And also, because they can.

The Xbox console is a completely locked down system which gives Microsoft a complete stranglehold over the multiplayer service for any and all games on the platform.
On Windows however that isn't possible since its an open platform, and if they tried to enforce an Xbox live subscription people would just say "screw that" and instead play any of the countless thousands of other games that do not rely on Microsoft services, thus resulting in a massive loss of sales.

Yes, it is an application that was just for xbox when it initially launched, but Microsoft has expanded the application and their services to include the mobile and PC markets. These are somewhat limited, such as it requires windows 10 for the majority of the functionality and features. If you own Windows 10, the application also functions as a game start up platform, provides you access to xbox live features, clubs, friends, coms, etc. and all that accessibility and yes it is still called the Xbox Companion application.

    In the words of Microsoft:
"The Xbox Console Companion App brings together your friends, games, and accomplishments across Xbox One and Windows 10 devices."

Seriously don't you understand that Microsoft expanded their service, they have now allowed Windows 10 and in some cases even mobile phones to now also access and join the community. Things change in 6 years... if you don't like how Microsoft is adapting and doing things, maybe it is time to make a switch, I for one am happy with the current roadmap and is why I bought Windows 10 over 7.

  • @D3ADST1CK and @BloodyBil Please refrain from making posts intended to bait or troll another user, as it is a violation of our forum rules. Your posts have been removed accordingly.

Be courteous. Don’t insult players you don’t know. If humour is the intent, remember that this can be lost or misinterpreted online, and words can very easily offend. Be mindful of what you’re saying and if someone asks a question, see if you can help them out as you’d appreciate being helped out yourself if the roles were reversed.

  • @lady-aijou Aye!

Sorry I offended your feelings @NeedSmokes 😢 It's my fault really, I fall too easily for bait posts, I have to work on that I suppose.

  • @lady-aijou Seems like this thread was created to bait and troll. He's been told repeatedly that the function he's complaining about is working as intended - to keep multiplayer interactions with XBox Live users only which happens to include PC and mobile platforms.

    End of thread, IMO.

  • @d3adst1ck @BloodyBil Careful gents, the mods are quick with the banhammer when they smell something baity and trolly.

    Source: Can confirm.

Nah I don't blame them, they have been doing a great job lately. They also have to be impartial and treat both sides fairly, if someone's feeling are hurt and choose to play flag wars, mods kinda have to comply if lines have been crossed a bit.

I guess now that OP's question has been answered multiple times throughout the post, surely he won't need to ask the same question over again, since that would be bait as well right?
