Let me preface- I've made it to pirate legend. I've sunk lots of time and some irl money into it cuz I really enjoy the sailing, the pve, the adventure. But when I keep getting griefed, when I keep getting interrupted with tall tales, when every single time I go to make an alliance people only have the flag up to betray me, all with no way to safely practice pvp outside of competition in arena, it's exhausting. People refuse to leave me alone when I ask politely. All I want is to have fun sailing adventures, but most other players seem solely intent on pvp, and refuse to even make a deal or an alliance. So at this point should I just quit? I adore this game, but the aspect I hate the most is the one everyone else seems to love most.
Should I just quit the game?
Following up, like I just wanna take part in the events, do the world events like the forts or flameheart raids, do the tall tales.
And again, I'm more than happy to form alliances. But 9/10 times, when I raise the alliance flag, either people then betray me, or forgo the alliance all together and try to sink me anyway.
I'd be happy to practice the pvp, but there really isn't any way to outside of the arena, which I don't think is good for practice because it immediately thrusts me into the competitive scene. It's like being told this is how you practice flying, then getting shoved into a canyon. If there were just some kind of training room players could enter, where they could just practice pvp without penalty or competition, I'd readily use it.
So without any way to truly practice pvp, and with pvp seeming to be inevitable no matter what I do, it feels like both the devs and the player base say "lol either git gud or just quit"
@yelmurc I definitely agree, I do get picked on most often with a solo sloop. And I appreciate the suggestion to crew up. Do you have any suggestions on what to do when, for instance, I'm trying to play with some of my friends who are much newer to the game? Because it happens quite frequently that even with friends, we still get attacked and sunk and I don't want that to turn them off to the game. So I'm curious if you have any tips we could use to avoid conflict?
@sweetsandman Occasionally, but sometimes I'll make a crew, whether it be sloop or larger, with my partner or a couple other friends who aren't as experienced as I am, and we all collectively suck at pvp.
A lot of people in open crew have asked me why I still play . I've done everything other than a couple random merchant things and the last of the sea dog stuff. I've earned more gold than I'll ever need.
I'm closer to the end than the beginning and there are a lot of great things about random interactions and funny moments and occasionally people I take a liking to
but what really gets me out there still other than those things and just habit in general is when I am alone and when the sun is setting or rising or when those beautiful stars are out I kinda fall in love with it all over again even if just for a few moments.
Not everyone can just drop life and go be the young adventurer without a care in the world or the wanderer dropping everything for a good old fashioned midlife crisis but for a few moments or hours a day you can get a taste of it on these seas.
So, if you feel a piece of that when you sail. Stick with it. You'll be alright eventually.

Try to think of other boats paths and on big islands park your boat on the other side of these paths. For instance, north side of smugglers bay or old faithful, west side of discovery ridge, south side of the vies haven etc.
Also you can try chain spotting the mast of your ship if your going to be on an island for awhile. The mast and sails of your ship are a dead give away that your there, also turn off ship lanterns if you arnt already.
If you are trying to get your friends use to the game the new Tall Tales are pretty good at putting you in locations most crews won’t go to.
I love how encouraging the comments here are.
Though I gotta say, as someone who only put like... 40 hours into this game, I've spent probably a quarter of it running away and getting sunk by other players (whether I had loot or not, but I totally get people going after you when you have loot).
It's... discouraged me to say the least. I usually only play with close friends (never solo, can't handle it) bc I have really bad anxiety, and something about how pretty the game is and how fun it is to sail with others is what keeps me coming back. That being said, the amount of panic attacks I've had from people being just unnecessarily mean and not going away when I ask them kindly (or even offer the one storage crate I have) is higher than any other game and it often makes me wonder why I even still play. I just wanna go n do an event, and not get sunk on my way to the event, or quest, or whatever yknow?
I'd be happy to practice the pvp
I can definitely agree with that! I wish there was an option to either: Spar with fellow crewmates to practise, or somewhere people can go to practise ship on ship, player vs player, player vs ship combat etc. (like a training mode maybe? just that you can either go fight NPCs that teach you what to aim for when shooting cannons, or even against other players who also wanna learn)
I'm fairly good at dealing with NPC ships, but have no idea how to handle other players, and having an option somewhere to practice would be wonderful.@illumemotte said in Should I just quit the game?:

It's just a game there isn't any reason to do something you don't enjoy the process of doing if it has negative effects on your mind
You never have to pvp in this game. You never have to deal with anyone you don't want to or deal with anyone at all for more than a few moments
No loot is worth being upset about. This is a game where you will always be alright. It's just gold it's just commendations. You'll get there tomorrow if you don't get there today.
Don't run if it makes you anxious. Don't fight if it makes you anxious
Just leave immediately and start a new server and keep playing and selling
It's ok to not wanna fight or engage. Nothing you have on your ship is worth dealing with it for escape attempts if it's getting you upset.
You might have to adapt with how you get loot but there is definitely a spot for you to play here without prolonging anxiousness
Some of my friends occasionally play the game and struggle with conflict and that's just fine and dandy we can just pack our bags and grab a new server to prevent them from getting upset or not having a good time. Plenty of room for everyone here just gotta strategize for a session that is compatible with your personality.
Are you using the XBOX Life LFG tool?
Or Discord?
You can't honestly expect what you want to happen to happen organically in game. What are you bringing to the Alliance? A solo slooper with no PVP skills and limited PVE experience? Why would my 4 man crew want to alliance with you? So you can contribute nothing and get free Rep/Gold?
Have you ever tried the other side of it? Instead of of playing the role of the Victim have you tried being the aggressor? It's a lot of fun! Lot more easy to form alliances when you are capable and confident in wrecking the other Crews. They will be all more willing to join when faced with the alternative.
Also if your playing solo....well....there is no sympathy for self inflicted wounds.
Like your old enough to know that just about all the YouTube videos and Twitch streams are fake right? They don't show you the 200 hours of getting wrecked. Just the 45 minutes of the 1 play session that actually went their way.

Even the greatest baseball players ever only got on base 4 out of 10 attempts.
If you want practice attack people! Good news is you can't get worse!
@kumorecluse right I’d say keep at it also question are you a solo player or do you have a crew? if you have a crew the best to practice pvp in the main world is to just go find other ships and fight them for their loot even if that isn’t what you do most of the time it will give you the experience needed to defend your own ship …if solo there’s a lot of Sot communities you can join try to make some friends it’s the closest thing to Guilds this game has….also if your getting grieffed by other crews switch servers I know it’s annoying but sometimes it’s just easier than dealing with it …another option which is what I do take a break and play something else and come back later
@kumorecluse hey there, sea of thieves will always be a pvevp or pvpve game, this has been confirmed on multiple occasions by the devs.
You said there is no safe place to practice at pvp, i would actually counter that there is either option 1 like you said arena but otherwise just adventure.
Load up into a game with no game plan and no intention other then training combat skills.
And attack people, i personally did this by always having a little loot on board to incentivise myself more to win but go in with the general idea that it is the experience what counts not the outcome.
You will die and you will sink, probably both multiple times, however try to analyze where it went wrong and focus on that to get better.
Be it naval fighting, angling cannons, angling the ship managing sails whatever or in close combat, what got you killed ? Was it that you didnt see a player pulling up a blunder buss, or did you miss a player charging a sword lunge.
Loot, gold and doubloons in this game are easy to come by, take it from someone who basicly has all cosmetics in the game, there is always more loot.
And by going on the offensive you will soon learn that the best defence is a good offence, and before long you will change your behaviour when your out doing just pve stuff and someone rolls out on you.
Not saying this is you but one mistake i see players make all the time is expecting friendlyness because they are friendly and due to that not preparing their ship to leave or at least have an angle on the opposing force.
