Stamina Bar

  • We already have something akin to stamina when a sword lunge fails, however as it stands there is nothing to punish swinging wildly and hoping to hit something. it's also incredibly easy to get stuck on defence when your opponent wont stop swinging so you can only block and hope they make a misstep or they get around your guard. Though chasing someone who is running around can be as annoying as chasing a running ship.

Stamina would fix this along with making bunny hopping around the place not so useful anymore but to the point.

Range weapons punish inaccuracy and lack of skill when aiming them and from their limited ammo you can carry at a time, so naturally the Sword should punish you for swinging it wildly. Stamina would recover naturally pretty quickly when not exerting yourself but otherwise would drop when you swing your sword, jump, run or lunge.

Stamina should not recover while carrying heavy objects like chests which require two hands and dont allow running.

You should move at half speed (like in water) if stamina is drained.

Less stamina would be consumed when your sword hits something but more is drained from being blocked than if you missed.

I already expect negative response from those who love the sword but would genuinely like to hear REAL critique about this idea or if there is any other things stamina should interact with in the game that I didn't think of when making this suggestion.

  • No. Noo no no, this isn’t that type of RPG game.
And swinging non stop. They get three good swings and there is a delay

Sword vs guns is also a thing. Distance. You also have blunderbombs
So far the sword has more counters. Heck you can’t use a sword perfectly underwater or while swimming.

  • Rofl. Never. This ain't Dark Souls.

  • They could make it a more pronounced stun when you get blocked 3 times in a row. It is meant to be the opening but it doesn't falter much.

  • What does a stamina bar actually accomplish though? Especially in regards to running and treasure movement, all it does is slow the game down. Slow gameplay is what they have been trying to get away from. It was too slow to sell to every tent, so they added the sovereigns. It was too slow to move loot so they added sprinting with small items, and picking items up with the chest in your hands. A stamina bar would literally only serve to slow down the gameplay. It would become less of a stamina bar and more of a "ability to enjoy the game" bar. The combat in this game is well balanced, and though the sword has no ammo, it does have cooldowns. 3 swings and then you can't swing or block for a second. If you charge a lunge, you can't do anything until it goes off, if you miss the lunge, you have a second of no movement. Swords can't attack and sprint at the same time so you can already move the same speed as someone charging you with a sword. The advantage you have is being able to hit them at any point before they get close enough to swipe at you. Blunderbuss for knockback and then snipe or pistol to finish.
