World idea! Flat earth!!!!

  • I’ll get straight to it.

Make the world flat! I know haha, flat Earthers would go crazy!!!!

You could make the edges a waterfall into the abyss!! Where you get a glimpse at the great turtle on the way down.

Also this could create a neat daylight cycle... the sun would be a spotlight that circles the map.... so theoretically you could have longer or shorter days depending on if your sailing with or against the sun... might be a bad idea but I thought it would be fun

Also you could create some unique areas that are at the edge of the world and they actually scale down a ways off the map... might be neat to be traveling down a path watching your step lest you fall into the abyss

Just thought this would be neat

  • This idea is amazing! Great work chap!

  • It's a fun idea, from another world. Within the lore of Sea of Thieves, the area we're in actually exists on Earth as we know it, it's just surrounded by what's called the Devil's Shroud, making access to the sea of thieves incredibly difficult and dangerous, but there is still an ocean and world beyond it.

  • I don't know how well this would align with the lore of the game world, but it'd be great if there was some old sea myths turned into reality for Sea of Thieves. E.g: Some folks used to worry that if you sailed too far you'd fall off the edge of a giant table.

  • @tundra-793 I have an easy solution for that.

Scrap all that stuff and do my Idea

Unless that lore has an impact on the game or potential sequels... if it doesn’t than do the fun ideas always ... simple, all they have to do is rework the entire lore concept... no biggie

  • No, we don't need to be reinforcing erroneous beliefs. If anything, I would love it if, when you sailed too far into the shroud, you appeared magically on the other side of the map... In this way, you could say that the SoT is, without a doubt, round.

  • all these ideas would mean no more extensions of the map without just rewriting story/map. Its perfect as it is red sea potentially hides new regions, areas, islands to explore should the shroud decide to part or we use shroudbreaker to access it(or rare get round to making it)i hope 1 day rare fill in the world and u have the possibility to sail around the entire world.

  • Well something is up.

The constellations don't appear to move as the night progresses ( I understand btw why it has been done this way ), yet the sun and the moon rise & set :)
Flat earth?, it could be already!
The SoT world as it is..... just set in the shroud, maybe/maybe not on the back of a turtle.
That in itself is the mystery, are we or aren't we... it's enough for me, unable to see beyond the shroud.

  • @zegmoosafax as if you replied to yourself :D

  • @zegmoosafax all you had to do is:

    1. Rewrite the whole lore, books etc
    2. Recode THE ENTIRE GAME

    Basicly making a new game....

  • @callmebackdraft I don’t see your point ... seems simple enough to me!

To be honest though you’re exaggerating a bit, adding some space, waterfalls, and some backdrop doesn’t constitute a whole new game.... mechanically it would be a pretty good sized changed but much smaller than the size of the actual game, and considering that 95% of existing mechanics would be still exist... you see my point

I do think you’re correct about the lore, I don’t keep up with the SoT lore(I bet a good percentage of players don’t), but it would definitely be a massive overhaul on that part... so I get why it could be a bad idea from that perspective

Ultimately this is my opinion... design the game for the maximum amount of fun, if the existing design is funner and the lore adds a good amount of flavor for the majority of players, then this idea is bad.

But if my idea is funner(which I think it would be) and the lore overhaul doesn’t subtract from the experience(which it wouldn’t in my case) then I wouldn’t worry about how it changes the design as long as it’s for the better

also Content does not have to be limited because the world would be finitely defined... I doubt players would be upset if islands surfaced or the boundaries expanded.... and if you’re not creative enough to storytell past that then what exactly is your job anyway???

  • @zegmoosafax I don't think the flat earth part with the edge of the world being a waterfall would work very well, however I think it would be a great idea for a part of the map to include a region with waterfalls and stuff.

  • You can't do that to be in line with lore. There are still another lands in the shroud. The map doesn't end there.

  • @zegmoosafax are you a developer/programmer/software engineer ?

Well i am and let me tell you to change something that encompassess your entire world is a large change and is besicly a complete rebase of your code:

*how does shiptype respond whilst fallong off the world/waterfall
    *create sailable waterfalls
*remove current ground scheme and change it for a void.

    • create complete floor beneath world (current sot world doesn’t have that)
*move ferry of the damned to another location (currently situated under game world)
*make sure all the new underwater terrain doesn’t absolutely destroy loading times, memory usage, framerates.
    • implement complete physics calculations around how the gameworld handles the encompassing void, waterfalls

I could go on forever... anyway even though you or other people dont follow the lore it is there, there are actual real world books written around it, the flat world doesnt fit in sea of thieves and its era because around the time sot is set in it was well known that the world wasn’t flat.

  • @zegmoosafax On the off chance you're not kidding at this point; Literally the entire plot basis of Tall Tales is quite specifically, that the world isn't flat, nor rests upon any marine animal, but is in fact quite large, dangerous and open for exploration.

  • @zegmoosafax

Actually I read or heard somewhere (may have been Mike Chapman's Twitter) that they considered making the edge of the world exactly like this: a waterfall dropping into an abyss.

I think the nail in that coffin was that it didn't feel right to look out to the horizon of this beautiful world and see this huge awkward abyss, if I remember what I heard correctly.

I think they determined that the Devil's Shroud was the best way to create an edge to the world that still retained the immersion of the world, and I agree with that considering how crucial the Devil's Shroud is to the lore of Sea of Thieves.

  • @callmebackdraft

At this point I’m convinced that this idea isn't well received, and that’s cool .. I’m not crying, you’re crying.

Not sure why you’re so upset about the coding comment, I’m not saying that it isn’t a large content add/rework but to say it would take so much that it would be a new game is an exaggeration

Also i would argue that it doesn’t matter if the world was known to be
flat because our world is known to be spherical and we have a GROWING movement of flat earthers running around

For realz though thanks for the input! I do appreciate it!

Thanks everyone for the comments, I appreciate everyone's input.

  • @zegmoosafax sounds like you want the flat earth to be true. This is a bit freaky.

  • I want it to be flat. And circular. And carried on the back of four elephants, who in turn stand on the back of the intergalactic star turtle, Great A'Tuin. That would be awesome.

  • @foxthephoenix5
Oh no! I just think its hilarious!
But I do think it does create neat game mechanics

the funny thing is that if it was the game was coded properly and truly reflected the flat earth model I bet it would disprove the whole theory, cause you would play the game and it would be noticeably different from reality. The funny part is whether it strengthened or weakened the flat earth stance I bet the movement would be mostly unaffected because, if you pay attention, they appear to ignore all information that disagrees with the movement and the majority of information that could be perceived as strengthening the movement is well understood by rational people as either an ignorant misrepresentation of information or a "flat" out false statement

  • Ha, I totally missed the mention of the turtle in the original posting! :P
