Why are there events for literally just a couple of days that require so much play time in the game? There are times in people's lives when they are unable to play games (in hospital, on vacation, working...). Some rewards are unavailable after the events and there is no chance for the players to get them, if they had no time during the event.
Why are you doing this? Are the servers too empty. If you just add the content to the game and allow the players to get it whenever they want, this will engage players exactly as much as the way you are doing it now. Maybe at another time, but does this really matter?
Why these short Events?
As @urihamrayne has stated every event, whether it's Bilge Rat or DLC related, has had the "main feature" of that event stick around after the event has ended. The only thing that gets rotated out are the limited time cosmetic items from Duke's shop. Also every Bilge Rat Adventure has lasted for a minimum of two weeks. The DLC events usually go for about a month or longer.
@urihamrayne but when cosmetics are the only thing you have to work towards...
it's a little annoying that the best looking stuff is only attainable for a very short time.Ahoy there @GaRv3 ! Whilst you have been here for a while, it seems you've only just started joining in the discussions so welcome!
The current event Shrouded Spoils launched on November the 28th; some 44 days ago (6 weeks and a day to be precise). Hardly the couple of days you quote!
As other users have already mentioned, the only things that are taken out of the game are Duke's time-limited cosmetics, with commendations and doubloons now persistent after the fact for event.
The events make sure that people can get as much done as they can during the time-frame though - hence forts being in constant rotation for the past few weeks. They then fade back out into normal behaviour patterns to allow for the next exciting event to take place. There has been strong debate since the BRAs started about whether limited-time cosmetics should be a thing. Having missed some myself over the last 9 months I can say, personally that they should.
Yes it is annoying when we miss out on things, but then that's where the cool stories and interactions with others happen - you pop on a nice Hungering One scar, or the Bone Crusher set and that new player can ask you where it came from - thus begins a tale of woes and thrills to enthrall that newcomer to the game.@garv3 It never lasted few days minumum two weeks.
please bother to do your homeworks before you post something so ignorant, and the contnet stays only the time limited items desapearIn my opinion 14 days are a couple of says - I'm not talking about a pair of days. Minimum time for a vacation - at least for me - is two weaks. So It's not unlikely to miss an event.
It's not all about cosmetics but story content as well. What about the Hungering Deep? Merrick is gone. The logs are spread around the world but don't make any sense any more. Why shouldn't we leave these adventures in the game for new players? A more populated and living world would for sure be more interesting. Especially in a game like SoT which would benefit from more interactivity.@garv3 said in Why these short Events?:

This is an ever changing living world we play in, it's awesome.
And if you are sad about missing out on certain event exclusive cosmetics, i'm sure they will come back around eventually.

Wow... I've learnt something I never knew :)
It would be nice if the previous vanity rewards could rotate when there are no other events going on.
My opinion is that when you miss a part of set (or the whole event entirely), it can be difficult to use the rest, because the other items don't work well with it and there aren't many alternatives in similar colors that could replace the missing pieces. This then creates negative feelings of dissatisfaction that can lead to the player leaving the game. (Not to mention when you want matching outfits with your crew)
There are games I couldn't play due to this issue, because it promotes the mentality to avoid games that have been realsed some time ago. The older the game the more likely there are many items that would be perfect for your in-game character, which you wouldn't be able to reach, so better to play fresh games.
Even putting the previous event items in the cash store is much better alternative than being unable to obtain the things you like forever.
I'd like to see some kind of feature (be it the cash store, events repeated seasonally, or something else entirely) that would allow players to get the old vanity items.
Of course I am not that type of player who wants to prevent others from heaving the same nice things like I do. Those palyers could be upset if the limited items were available on regular basis. The question is if the one time event limited content keeps more players playing or if the opposite happens.
Well, my long term goal with SoT is completing everything. When I say complete everything I mean rising every reputation to it's maximum, acquire all cosmetics and complete all commendations. Every single bit of content they add to the game expands it in a way or another... And taking it out of the game is bad. I mean, why would you take it out once in the game? Has no sense for me, and my journey to "complete" the game can't be finished now, because I lost some cosmetics because I prioritized something else. When Forsaken Shores came out I bought the weapons, but had not enough time to farm more doubloons, so I lost the clothes.
In resume, putting something in the game then taking it out a month or whatever time after has no sense for me, even if you can buy it if it spawns randomly in any comercial outpost.
That said, I want my Forsaken Shores clothing set and ship pieces.
In resume, putting something in the game then taking it out a month or whatever time after sucks, and has no sense for me.@stormfox57 you can still get the Forsaken clothes set still. U just need to do 5 voyages of GH and 5 of OoS.

That is right, modern gaming has taught you that vanity items are what you need, when in fact they have absolutely no value in a computer game. The true progression of Sea of Thieves should be gameplay related, the true aim of SoT should be unlocking new adventures. Wouldn't it be great to have a new quest type unlock for every new rank obtained in each voyage company? A new GH quest at level 5/10/15/20/25/30/35/40/45/50. A new OoS quest at level 5/10/15/20/25/30/35/40/45/50. A new MA quest at level 5/10/15/20/25/30/35/40/45/50. And then once you reach PL every athena level unlocks a new completely different quest, giving you 10 endgame quest for you to play around and have fun on top of the other 30 completely different basic voyage company quests. Now who could say that SoT has no content?
The fact of the matter is that all you unlock is cosmetics, not gameplay, and that is basicaly a placeholder for me, because what I look for in a game is gameplay not vanity.
I still find it odd that people dislike the fact that they cannot get certain cosmetics because they missed out, or they didn't start at launch.
I have lost count of the number of MMOs I have started well beyond launch - WoW included where I knew there was content that I could never get, as I simply wasn't there when that event happened. As I said above, the fact that you cannot get everything should not be the end of the world. There will be stuff that you DO manage to get, that others later down the line cannot.
Personally I feel it is a shame if cosmetics are repeated, as that may also mean there will nothing for older Pirates to get or work towards potentially during future adventures - or worse still - cries of TOO MUCH to try and earn from those who want it all but missed out before.
As per comments that cosmetics should not be all that we work towards - this has been the game design since day 1 - it all lends itself to the qual playing field for all users, no matter their experience.
Apart from Legends being able to access Athena quests, why should different quest types or activities be locked behind levels?!
why should different quest types or activities be locked behind levels?
To not overwhelm new players with a myriad of activities they don't have the experience and knowledge to properly tackle. Having new quests unlock is a good way to add progression, because it's not a powercreep or a number, it's just a recognition of the player's ability to play the game, to show that he is improving and can take bigger challenges.
You can obviously have the base quests of X marks the spot, animal delivery and skelleton hunting as the starter quests, and every new quest is unlocked by ranking up. You can obviously tweak the complexity of the base quests depending on the rank. By getting to later levels the tedium of doing the same quest type repeatedly in order to reach legend is mitigated by having a whole spectrum of quests a player can choose to partake in every session, variety kills boredom, which is one of the biggest criticisms against SoT. Endgame content like athena's quests tend to also fall into repetitive grind, as players do the same activity over and over again, having a gameplay goal to work towards every rank helps mitigate the mindless grind, while recognizing that the players understand what type of challenge will be asked of them.
It's how you do progression in a clever way, not by giving you a number you use to punch other nubers harder, but by providing meaningful character growth. You start off as a lost sailor, you end up as a legend, your progression through obtaining knowledge on how to find your reputation should reflect that, not just through vanity, which will never make any game any better gameplaywise.
Why have time limited cosmetics and events?
To make them special and a way to reward the players dedicated to the game and the ability to show off how long they have been playing.
The majority of items most likely will return at some point for a limited time.
Two weeks gives you enough time to pop in and buy them. That said most of the limitations have been extended to provide us all the opportunities to obtain the items.
I am missing the first day eyepatch while preordering the game. I however had other things on the day of release and I am sad I am never going to be able to buy it.
Though nobody is entitled to the items, want something then it is up to you to get them. The dev's are being more than reasonable with their time frames.

@targasbr Really? At least here in Germany a two week vacation in the summer is common. Most people take even more than 14
Daysdays off to spend some time with their family, get to know new countries etc.I think the point is that your use of a "couple of days" is very much incorrect as a "couple" means 2. Your opinion on what the definition of "couple" is does not come into play for the communications and the mocking that is going on here.
@targasbr is saying that if only he could take "a couple" of days off and have it equal 2 weeks, that would be great. It is a sarcastic comment and is intended to mock your incorrect use of the word "couple".
Nope, that's not what he wrote. "I would love to travel for two whole weeks, but usually anyone who has a life is unable to travel that long".
Additionally I don't really care... No, I don't care at all, if the term is formally correct. Take a dictionary, find "a couple of sth." and you will see two meanings:
- formal: two of sth.
- informal: a relatively small number of sth.
But in the end this is not the topic of this thread. Sticking to a topic and finding arguments for or against something - opposed to trying to get offtopic and attack others - seems to be impossible on most forums today. Well, kiddies all around.
Doesn't matter. I'll find another place to talk about the game - as long as I am going to play it. Cosmetics can't keep me playing for long and that's all the game is about. A game should be about story, gameplay and fun - not "player engagement", the publishers term for skins. What happened to my industry? I remember the times when we made games that were fun instead of skin packs, leader boards, micro transactions, tons of overpriced DLCs etc.
But now I get offtopic, so have a good one.
