Sneaky commendation changes

  • So I don't know if anyone's noticed yet, but a bunch of commendation qualifications have been dramatically reduced. I went from Tier 2 with a bunch of Order of Souls commendations all the way to Tier 5 with a single skull because I already had the requisite skulls! I also got to tier 4 with a bunch of gold hoarder commendations too just by turning in a single chest!

See? Rare does listen after all!

  • @r4bbi-the-shark Ahoy matey!

Aye, agreed, the merchant ones are also much, much better! And the rewards are much better for crates now too.

    I love these changes.

  • Have all commendation requirements been lowered, or just some of them? I'm at work now so can't check.

  • @drunkpunk138

    This reddit post should explain.

    https://www.reddit.com/r/Seaofthieves/comments/9bjkfb/commendation_rebalance_changed_all_my_numbers/e53gqzx/

  • @drunkpunk138 Not all of them, but a lot of have been balanced!

It does look a lot more achievable now and feel like you are progressing through the levels much faster.

  • its a bit of a slap in the face to people that put the time in to turn in 500-1000 fort skulls etc, to log in and show the number has been cut in half. they only needed to change the ones in regard to the banana and cannonball crates, not make every other one as someone put it, participation trophy like. it was the one thing in the game that could set you apart from others as some took a looong time to achieve, as with everything else in the game now though, they have made changes and are practically giving them away to people that play.
I never played to gring the commendations but i can understand why a lot of people would be put off by this. this game seems to be going down quicker than the titanic

  • @shuoink RIGHT ON!

@shuoink To those player I say, you shouldn't have wasted your time and realize those would have been balanced in the future based on the sheer volume and community feedback that specifically came out around launch time and the weeks that followed, regarding how utterly ridiculous and time consuming some of those commendations were.

some of them were ridiculous, those are the ones they should have fixed.

would you be upset if you spent all your time grinding skull forts to show that you have turned in 1k of them, only to log in suddenly and have it show you have only done 500 instead? etc..
again i personally never grinded em out, but understand how they way they did it was a slap in the face to a lot of people. They only needed to change the banana crate and cannonball crate ones really, the rest were fine. Ah well.

All in all, i agree, dont waste time grinding stupid things... including athenas

  • @personalc0ffee said in Sneaky commendation changes:

@shuoink No because there's much more important things to worry about and I disagree, they were not fine. They are absolutely ridiculous, considering the amount of time a casual player would have played.

you say no because there were more important things to worry about... then disagree about them being ridiculous.. but i thought.. there were more important things to worry about?.... you cant at least see how other people besides yourself MIGHT be a little upset about it?

im going to agree to disagree. the change was stupid, as you said, there are more important things to worry about. instead of changing the ridiculous ones, they changed em all. Ah well. Not surprised at this point, every update they are making something worse somewhere, its expected at this point. Does suck for the people that were grinding em out. I wish as you said that they would worry about more important things, this particular thing was pretty much bottom of the list

i think those that are ok with them doing this should put themselves in the shoes of one who grind 500+ fots/skulls/etc

  • @zodemere

Oh, I don't know. I paid full price for my pirate clothes, yet I didn't have an aneurism when they dropped the price.

How about this; in the reputation menu they can add a new section called the "Awesomeness Number". Make hard stuff like forts and such add to your number. You could even buy a cool coat that would display your number on the back so you could easily turn around and point out...

"See? My number is bigger than your number. That means I matter more. Cause my number's bigger."

  • @personalc0ffee That is a ridiculous response. Rare should have responded in a timely manner if the feedback was so overwhelming. Rare made it a problem when they made it so they couldn't allocate resources to properly fixing things within their own game. You want to tell me that it is difficult to reduce the commendation requirements? It isn't. It is literally changing numbers and having a client that can filter the new changes. Instead, Rare waits 6 months, when people have already invested time into distinguishing themselves, only to get slapped in the face. Something is wrong with SoT, and it isn't the players who expect their dedication to remain recognized within the game...

  • @v**a-hombre Yeah, expect that in a year and it to cause islands to disappear because Rare can't release updates without breaking something else...

  • @flying-poopla

    Eh, if you say so.

The doomsayers have been saying the same things since launch. Hasn't effected my good times yet. But hey, maybe this time'll be lucky!

  • I dont like them lowered, it ruins the progress that people have obtained already. about the price drop I would really like the rest of the money back that I've made

  • why do u guys respond to the trolls? i love the ignore option!

Yes I could understand why someone who grinder out 1000 skull forts to get the achievement would be upset. Do I have any sympathy... No not at all, as I have no idea of the mindset of someone who would do that.

  • @personalc0ffee Why is it necessary? Is it because you say so? I don't think it is a personal attack on me in the slightest. I think it is a display of poor planning and design. Do you want to know how making the game less grindy would have been accomplished? It would have been accomplished by not designing it with a dearth of activities on launch. It would have been accomplished by including more than four mission types. It would have been accomplished by requiring less than 200+ hours to complete all factions. It would have been accomplished by including additional world activities. It would have been accomplished by making Athena's quests something more than an amalgamation of the previous faction missions with a 150+ hour clear time and artificial difficulty increase.

Instead, they decide that they should listen to feedback 6 months after release on something that is incredibly easy to solve. This problem should have been addressed at the outset. The programming required to shift the goal posts on these commendations is not that complicated. It shouldn't have even been designed that way in the first place. Ultimately it was, and Rare sat on their hands. Now, after tons of people put in the hours to reach the carrot, the commendation title that will show their dedication and set them apart from most of the player base, they meet Rare on the other end and Rare hits them in the face with a stick. If you can't understand that then you can't be helped.

    TRU THAT!

  • @personalc0ffee It is the response I expected from you. So because the decision came down from on high, your gods at Rare, it means that it was justified and necessary? That is the most ridiculous logic I have seen. Rare has actively taken the accomplishment from players in the game. An accomplishment they could have made easier at the outset. But they didn't. This is the real issue. Not that commendations needed to be difficult, but that they were and then were switched after people already invested copious amounts of time. I can't see how you don't understand this.

  • @flying-poopla

To be fair, that's kinda the nature of service games these days. They're always going to be changing based on feedback and collected player data. Both of which can change drastically when moving from beta testing to full launch.

    The accuracy of skeletons.
The loot drop value based on rep.
    The loot value overall.
    Cosmetic/skin prices.
    Ship mechanics.
    Control sensitivity.
    Etc.

I'm not saying you have to agree with it; I haven't agreed with everything they've done. But I've never felt like I was being attacked because of a change in mechanics.

  • @v**a-hombre This has never been an issue of a game being modified to provide redress to concerns and feedback. It has always been about the amount of time it took for this redress to be applied. This was not hard from a development standpoint to change when they received the initial feedback early on. Instead they waited this long to change it, allowing people to already have invested the time for "hard to obtain, exclusive titles." It is about Rare's delivery strategy and their development pipeline/prowess. It is god awful.

  • @personalc0ffee
The issue here is not so much that more casual players can get more more commendations in a way that feels organic and is in tune with the general gameplay experience. The issue here is that those commendations were the only tangible long term goals available in game for a lot of people and that by reducing the requirements so much on all of them it not only erased a lot of progress, but it also failed to replace it with something else. As a result there are people, myself included, who find themselves without anything to do.
As an analogy it would be like making all casual players Pirate legend, athena's 10 and give them all available cosmetics overnight, it would drastically change how they view and play the game, which they would probably not enjoy past the first 3 minutes.

  • I note that those complaining say it isn't fair on who grinded 500 forts. Saying you did this as a grind suggests you didn't enjoy it, and just did it for a commendation; a title.

Maybe you should re-evaluate your priorities, the game (as is any game) is meant to be played for enjoyment, not an obligation that you don't even want to do.

  • @flying-poopla

Eh, I think Rare had bigger issues at launch than the commendations. And once again, I'm not saying people shouldn't be disappointed or annoyed; I get that. It's the venom-spewing, name calling, and just sheer bitterness of it all that has me concerned.

I love my video games, but I also try and keep them in perspective. If I let games upset me to this extent, I wouldn't even be PLAYING SoT since I don't like PvP.

Having fun might be a cop out to you, but it isn't to me. Having fun IS the sole reason I play video games.
