Cannon Ball Friendly Fire.

  • I have been playing this game for a long time now and with this resent update to the game on 3 July my crew and I have discovered that you can kill your crew with cannon balls. We are not sure if this was suppose to be in the game because there was nothing in the patch notes about it.

  • only makes sense, but i haven't seen it yet. any chance there were gunpowder barrels around? they are everywhere these days.

  • @squallycircle7 No we had killed the GPB Skellys already and I shot my crew mate directly and killed him.

  • @ant-heuser-kush Im not saying I hate it, I would have just liked to know that it was getting implemented into the game via patch notes and not learning about it on my own.

  • I had heard the rumors and informed my friend of them last night...next thing I know hes shooting at me at the outpost...it hurts.

I actually really like it, intentional or not. My friend likes to go cannon happy so it's exciting to have cannonballs wizzing by...even more so when they hurt.

  • i have always thought it pretty cheap that we could mow thru skelly captains without doing any splash damage to our teammates that are in the fray.

  • I really like the team dmg from cannonballs it gives us additional ways of creating crew hilarity the only other own crew dmg type coming from powder barrels.
    A welcome addition.

Adding achievements for things of hilarity like this would also be amazing imo
e.g. "Whoops fellow Pirate didn't see you there" : Earnt via accidentally killing a crewmember with cannon fire at the same time as x3 skellington (variants optional)

I found this out in a similar way. While fighting skeletons my husband was going cannon happy and sent me to an early grave. He apologized, laughed, and then shot me again. He said he had to make sure.

I don't dislike it but it may cause my husband to spend many a night in the doghouse. ;)

  • I understand this was unintentional, but I think it should stay. It makes no sense that you can stand in the center of a volley of cannon fire, everything around you getting utterly obliterated, and not get a scratch all because you're on the same crew. Gunpowder barrels certainly don't work this way. Cannon fire shouldn't either. Knowing cannon fire could harm your crewmates adds an element of strategy. I see no negative here.

  • If this stays in the game then the next patch may introduce friendly fire. :)
    No one will be safe!

  • I like it!

You think playing with randoms is bad now? Just wait!

  • @pumpkinkangaroo
Stop that! That’s not funny! 😂

  • Yep. I kept killing my partner at the skull fort the other night. Oops! Just kidding no remorse here for his many deaths by cannonballs.

  • I kinda hope it stays, Death is a joke anyhow. And this could lead to some VERY fun clips!

  • I reported this a while back, it's an unintended change that is not slated to be kept.

Yes, but it should be! :)

  • It’s a known bug I really like it tbh. Hope it stays.

  • Weird. Today a crewmate tried to shoot me with a cannon three times, the ball "hit" every time and yet I took no damage.

NO! If they took it out before I had my chance for revenge I'll just cry! RL has curbed my plans for payback but I was going to get my chance tonight.

I'm going to go cry now.

    It really shouldn't be.

How does TK'ing fall in line with how hard Rare wants to stress the crew bond?

    What is TKing?

  • @genuine-heather Team Killing

  • Thanks for the definition, @Reedski.

@Tre-Oni Okay, maybe I’m missing your point. How does more realistic, unsafe cannon fire equate to “team killing?” Please elaborate.

  • I think it'd be a nice feature to have some danger from your own crew's cannon fire. I haven't been doused in team cannon fire since the first few OOS voyages and we had to track down the skulls after. I usually call to cease cannon fire once I'm on enemy deck so I don't get knocked off. Is that not a danger right now? I'm not sure. I bet the cursed cannon balls can friendly fire when they show up. I'm sure it will be no time after before the posts about crews trolling their own with cannon fire on the shore line as they try to voyage or do a fort or sink another ship once they arrive in game.

  • If you can't trust your own crew...maybe you need a new crew?

  • @yashiero personally, I think you should be able to enable friendly fire just for a more realistic experience (if your into that stuff)

Because you can literally kill your team?

Its not a matter of "cant trust your own crew get a new crew" either..

When specifically asked why teammates couldn't harm other teammates in the past Rare spoke about how they tested it, and in the end felt it didn't do much to aid teamwork, and that they wanted to enforce a crew bond, where your crew is your crew and harming them wasn't really in the cards.

I understand this philosophy for firearms and swords, which you would presume a capable person could control enough to avoid harming one's own crew. But cannonballs don't make sense. How can you stand at ground zero, cannonballs obliterating everything (and everyone) around you, and not even get a scratch? I understand and appreciate the "team" aspect of the game, but on the other hand there's immersion. Being "immune" to cannon fire strains suspension of disbelief beyond hope. Plus, when cannon fire is deadly to all it forces teams to cooperate and communicate to succeed. I understand some players may be accustomed to using certain tactics against other ships, but I think this is a change for the better. More danger, more strategy, more fun!
