Apparently development work had already started on that. Wondering if maybe the new team (#4) has been doing a little work on that.

@sshteeve Oh they've definitely had the assets for a while now. I'm wondering if team 4 came in and started implementing the MTX store though. Otherwise, I'm not sure why they would include the cat in the gunpowder skeleton picture if it wasn't something that is coming soon and that is the teaser. Or they're just trolling us...

I think so too.
Before launch, pets were going to be one of their original content drops, but after the backlash from launch I think they shifted all their teams towards working on the content we were asking for to put out all the fires. Now with team 4 added I think they'll work on all the micro-transactions (ie pets) that they were originally planning.

Oh ya, and the fact they were originally planning on working on pets first goes to show they greatly over estimated where they were with the game.
Imagine if we got Pet Palooza instead of the Hungering Deep. ha
That being said, I'm looking forward to pets and almost feel bad for Rare with all the backlash (not that it's not deserved), but I think for the most part they've made all the right decisions since launch.

That is if monkeys are comingThe devs talked about this at E3. They are "looking at adding pets" in the future.
My ask, is that they have a bird that hangs out on your ship that records your phrases and repeats them randomly or when approached by someone (i.e. a different crew member).

In an interview with joe Neate near the end of E3 a guy asked him what's with the crabs in the trailers? 2 trailers, both had crabs, are we getting crabs? And joe said something along the lines of "I wouldn't rule it out, but we were mainly just having fun with the crab. We enjoyed all the speculation. Even we like to troll sometimes."

Yeah they gonna troll, but people were also asking about pets in the round table discussion and all of their answers led to, "yes, it is something we are looking at in the future" and they said most likely as a pet
@surveyorpete They are from the Artwork of Sea of Thieves book. Some really good insights into the concept art and hints at things to come in there!

I'm down with pets once they get around to rolling them out, we know it is pretty assured to be coming at some point unless people express a strong dislike for it.
That said, in the meantime, I always keep a golden chicken on my ship (as soon as a find a coop and suitable chicken) who is dubbed the captain of the ship and remains with us through our journey. I normally leave him in a tavern for a fresh spawn to sail with him, though I suspect they just sell him off.
